Today, I am excited to get started as
@UofMaryland
’s president. My wife, Sylvia, and our two children love
#UMD
and the great state of Maryland. We have proudly raised two Terps! We are all part of the greater Terrapin Family and we are excited about our collective future.
At the first and only
@LedoPizza
parlor in NYC, which just opened and has on display photos from their very first location in Adelphi, MD. Enjoying this slice of Prince George's County pride from the Big Apple.
Congratulations to my son Donovan Pines for scoring his first goal in
@MLS
for DC United! Let’s not forget that he honed his skills at Ludwig Field at the University of Maryland and won a National Championship in 2018 with
@MarylandMSoccer
.
I stand in solidarity with our international undergraduate and graduate students. We are currently working to support your status as students here at
@UofMaryland
. We come from countries all over the world, and we are all Terrapins.
The whole family proudly wore
@dcunited
jerseys in support of my son Donovan’s selection to
@USMNT
. Congrats to the team on a hard-fought win over Canada.
Today I am pleased to announce that
@UMPD
will divest from the 1033 program that provided military surplus equipment to police departments across the country. Thank you UMPD for this big step forward. We have much more progress to make, and we will make it together.
Yes, that’s me. Backpack filled with
#TerrapinSTRONG
masks, and handing them out to students in downtown College Park. It’s not what I’d expected to do as president, but it’s part of my job for now.

Let’s be honest, every parent worries a little bit on the first day of school.
I jumped on the phone today with one Terp’s Mom to say that we’re all doing just fine here in College Park!
Here in Santa Monica, Susan Smith and I had the distinct privilege of having breakfast with the always-funny and amazingly accomplished and creative alum, Larry David.
We are grateful that Larry has Maryland Pride!!!
Ran into starting guard Eric Ayala as I was exiting Xfinity Center. I can't wait to see him back on the court.
What a great young man who is proud to represent Maryland.
Maryland - and institutions across higher education - sprang into action in support of our international students, and we have prevailed. For Terps from all over the world, this has been trying and unnecessary. Please know that we stand with you!
Breaking News: The Trump administration walked back a policy that would have stripped foreign college students of their visas if their courses were entirely online
The State of Maryland has announced it will join the lawsuit against new federal regulations that restrict international students.
#UMD
will fight to protect our community.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate my son, Donovan Pines, and his team
@dcunited
. He scored a goal in back-to-back games vs. CFMontreal and vs. Inter Miami.
I’ll be voting for him to represent in the MLS All Star game - won’t you?
For over 25 years, as professor, department chair, and dean, I've been a proud member of our Terp community. Today, together, we must lead
@UofMaryland
forward amidst two pandemics. I hope you’ll take a moment to watch my welcome message:
It is my honor to announce a major milestone in our university’s history: the first honorific naming of an academic department at UMD, the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Congratulating Fatts Russell on his outstanding performance in the game against Ohio State. He scored a season high of 27 points propelling the Terps to a 75-60 victory.
Another Dr. Pines in the family! And we couldn’t be prouder!
Sylvia and I - joined by my sister Denise - congratulate our daughter on her doctorate in physical therapy from Emory University in Atlanta.
We have achieved the highest overall
@usnews
ranking in our history, and
#UMD
is once again a top 20 public institution! These outstanding rankings highlight our steadfast commitment to pursue excellence. We hope it makes you proud of your flagship, Terps!
That's a wrap on Day 1. Thank you, Terps, for following along and to all those who have sent me such warm messages of welcome. I am so grateful to be your president, and there is much work ahead!
Saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and my condolences to the royal family. 65 years ago, she honored our campus with a royal visit to see her first American college football game.
Today, out for another run near University House and right by our 2008 2nd Place entry to the Solar Decathlon Competition named Leaf House. So much to see and experience around campus. Stay fit, healthy and safe.
“Liberty and justice for all” will not be fully realized until we acknowledge and address racial injustice. I will be your partner in this work, Terps. Have a safe Fourth!
Today, Trustee Nicole Pollard and I visited the home of Mr. Hiram T. Whittle to confer his Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Service. Mr. Whittle was the first African-American student to be admitted into
@UofMaryland
in 1951.
Thank you
@CoachTurgeon
for 11 seasons of exciting wins, incredible plays, and exceptional performances by our student-athletes. We appreciate what you have given to Maryland for over a decade.
I met
@TerpsMLax
freshman student-athlete Geordy Holmes at The Hall yesterday in College Park. I congratulated him and his team on an exciting win over UVA at Audi Field on Saturday.
Historically, masks have been a first line of defense to protect our health in a pandemic. This photo from 1918 reminds us that masks helped us then, and are helping us now.
I recently ran into
@TerpsWBB
’s Diamond Miller ‘23 at BWI. She is excited about her senior year and playing with her teammates for Coach
@BrendaFrese
. Go Terps!
We lost a legendary civil rights leader, Congressman John Lewis. He helped pass the pioneering Civil Rights Act of 1964. He will be remembered as the spiritual voice of the House of Representatives, and as a great American.
I salute his service to our country and to humanity.
Congrats to MVP quarterback Billy Edwards. What a game he played!
It was great to celebrate the win with Provost Jennifer King Rice, her husband, alum Kevin Plank and his son, as well as Sylvia and my son Donovan.
Sylvia and I will miss Donovan while he’s across the pond, but we couldn’t be prouder of him earning this incredible opportunity to play professionally in England!
Such a joy welcoming back
@GayleKing
‘76 as this year’s
#UMDgrad
commencement speaker. Wise words and great advice from one of our nation’s most admired journalists.
B1G congrats are in order to
@CoachFrese
, her staff, and an outstanding
@TerpsWBB
team on an incredible season, topping it off with a special B1G Championship! Go Terps!
We’re spending our spring break cheering on our son in England.
Inside the Sheffield Art and Natural History Museum, a Terrapin stands strong after someone transported it to England to make sure the British

Terps scored last night to give
@DCUnited
the 2 to 1 win over FC Cincinnati. Congrats to Chris Odoi-Atsem and Donovan Pines for each scoring a goal. This is number 2 for Pines in back-to-back games.
Today, I celebrated the retirement of Ms. Leslie Borak, Assistant Dean of External Relations. Leslie was my first senior hire in the
@ClarkSchool
when I became Dean in 2008. Leslie gave me this Maryland sweater back in 2013.
Today is the first time I wore it.
One year ago today, I started my journey as the President of
@UofMaryland
. I am proud of the work we have accomplished so far, and look forward to what’s ahead. Sylvia and I have appreciated your support every step of the way!
A Maryland legend, a Hall of Famer, and a beloved Terp forever.
Remembering Coach Lefty Driesell, whose larger-than-life presence will be felt by fans at the game today and Terrapins everywhere.
A true pleasure welcoming
@GovWesMoore
as our 2024 Commencement Speaker. Governor Moore is the leader of our state, friend of the University, and a great role model for our graduating class.
#UMDgrad
Congratulations to
@TerpsMLAX
and Coach Tillman as they continue this amazing NCAA Tournament run to Monday afternoon’s championship game! It was fantastic to watch their victory from the sidelines in Philly with my wife, Sylvia!

#BeTheBest
Dropped by to say hello to students in La Plata Hall. They teased me that I am the mask police, but I promise I’m just their friendly president. Here to support Terps!
It was great to see so many students fill Maryland Stadium to support our
@TerpsFootball
team and stay till the end of the game. What a great start to the semester. I hope to see you all next weekend against Howard University.
Go Terps!!!
Today’s
#SCOTUS
decision means our already-unassailable commitment to a diverse and inclusive campus must strengthen and grow within the bounds of the law. The educational value of campus diversity is one we will not sacrifice.
Today, we saw violence, chaos, and dangerous disregard for the rule of law in our nation’s capital, less than 10 miles from our campus. I hope every member of our UMD community is safe. We are monitoring the situation closely, as many of our neighbors are under curfew.
That was a powerful storm last night in College Park, Terps. Most importantly, I am grateful that all are safe and accounted for.
As we wait on power restoration, I want to say thank you to all our employees who are assisting with clean-up efforts.
A day of firsts as I meet with many University leaders (physically distanced, of course!) and conduct my first official meetings as president. We are working hard, on your behalf.
Gun violence has taken lives at nearby
@UVA
. Our hearts are with our friends and colleagues coping with this tragedy.
Praying for the lives lost and those who waited in fear to be reunited with loved ones.
