For those new here:
Power Digits is a completely unbiased mathematical way of ranking teams in College Football.
The primary objective of this ranking is not to predict future winners, but to determine who has the best resume for the College Football Playoffs.
The Rankings
Power Digits had Georgia as the
#1
team as early as week 3. Know that only 2021 data is considered.
Congratulations to Georgia on an end-to-end fantastic season, and for proving that defense wins championships!
Maybe resume-based rankings aren’t all that bad? This was week 7…
Things changed, teams fell and rose with wins and losses, but very possible this is our playoff 4, and this particular algorithm had it in week 7.
Maybe give it a chance before the harassment?
Penn State-Auburn just showed what CFB is all about. Stop scheduling games 5+ years in advance, and stop scheduling neutral site games in the regular season.
THATS how you make CFB better.
@blinkinriley
Yep, you’ve got it exactly. In a few weeks it’ll look similar to many of the AP poll voters. More games = better rankings. Early weeks are a little wild as every team has so little known about them, since it’s only 2021 data. Appreciate you sharing and taking the time to look!
The Playoff 4 is very simple at this point.
Georgia is in. Big Ten Champ (OSU or MICH) is in. Cincy is in with wins. Alabama needs to beat Georgia, if they don’t it goes to a 1 loss Big 12 champ, otherwise Notre Dame.
As we approach a weekend that will definitely alter the CFP conversations, this is our current resume-based Top 4!
The top 3 wins part of the algorithm is giving them high praise, for now. It will change soon.

It’s all based on 2021 wins and losses. We’ve actually identified the National Champion 2/3 of the last years, but because of the algorithm, early season weeks are funky while it learns who is good and who isn’t!
If you want to hear how the Power Digits was started, how it works, and me talk the state of college football, check out the podcast!
Blinkin and Kyle were wonderful hosts, and I’m so excited to be a part of their show!
A win is a win, and if you go 13-0, you deserve your playoff spot.
This is a fundamental belief of the Power Digits. (And Oklahoma has the 6th best resume so far anyways)
We can clown Oklahoma for their close wins all we want. But they’re going to “narrowly escape” their way into the College Football playoffs again.

Power 5 teams with 10-2 regular season records:
Alabama
Tennessee
Penn State
Clemson
Washington
If there’s ANY argument for Alabama in the playoff, the other 4 teams all deserve to hear the same one.
Does it sound crazy? Yes, because these teams shouldn’t be in the 4.
Friendly reminder that these 4 teams were the absolutely correct 4 teams to select for the playoff.
Based on historical trends, there will probably be 1 blowout, but all 4 teams deserve to be there.
If the Power Digits was selecting a

top 4, these are the selections in an unbiased, resume-based ranking system.
They likely match the actual CFP, with the order changed around. Can't complain about that!
Going forward, expect Tuesdays at noon to be the Power Digits ranking releases.
Same algorithm as 2021, we’re getting a facelift for 2023 when conferences ~realign~
The CFP Rankings are being released via television as part of a bridge between two high-profile college basketball games.
It’s not *just* about the best football teams.
Personal: The Power Digits was my first football research project, and has continued to grow into more than I ever could have imagined.
I’m thankful for every single click and interaction, it’s only fueled the fire to do better.
Excited is an understatement!

Been working towards this opportunity for a long time, but the journey is only getting started.
As of this moment in time (3:45 ET), Power Digits ranks Baylor's resume as better than Notre Dame's. ND will get a bump with a Cincinnati win, but that won't be enough to jump Baylor.
Better schedule overcomes the 1 loss difference.

“Ranked at the time” and early season biased rankings are exactly what the algorithm is set to destroy. As your opponents win, the rankings will rise. KSU has wins over Stanford and Nevada, both schools who keep winning. Alabama’s Miami opponent has other losses.
