So. The hunt is on in Whitehall for

dividends...to show some clear value in the freedoms given by Brexit.
As we report today one area being looked at is workers' rights...but it is politically difficult territory. /1
Since moving to the UK, I have always missed the Netherlands. But lately it has become truly unbearable. And the reason might surprise people. It is not the beautiful historic cities and towns where you can stroll through for hours and hours. Yes, I do miss them, but.
1/
I really don't think it is too much to ask. I really don't understand how you Brits can stand it. I really don't understand how you Brits allow it to continue. And it makes me sick. Homesick for Holland.
6/6
Lies about fellow European countries. Lies about immigrants. Lies about "lefty wokist do-gooders". Lies about world beating this and world beating that. Lies about empty shelves. Lies about corruption. Lies about Brexit. Lies, lies, lies.
5/
Yesterday evening, I saw on BBC Newsnight Ian Paisley saying in the camera that Johnson, BEFORE the 2019 GE (!), gave him a cast iron personal guarantee the NIP would be torn up. This morning I cannot find it in a single newspaper, not even on the BBC itself. I am lost for words.
So after the Tories have taken away your right to protest, to strike, to leave & live in 31 other European countries, your right to take them to court, and your protected human rights in the ECHR, then how do you think you can stop them breaking laws & and oppressing you?
But the thing I miss most at the moment, the thing that makes me truly sick inside, is just one bloody day of watching the government, the news, or the papers, and not see them filled with lie upon lie.
4/
@planetjedward
You don't need the abolish the monarchy to give people real democracy. There are plenty of countries in Europe, (like mine the Netherlands) that have a monarchy and are a real democracy. Might I suggest abolishing the Tories? I think that will do far more for democracy in the UK!
Just spoke to mum back home in Holland over the phone to catch up. Had her hair done and blah blah blah. Oh, and her hairdresser had just been to England for a city brake with her 3 sisters.
Oh, I said. Where? Birmingham, she said. They had heard it was nice.
Oh, I said.
1/
So, just to be clear:
The UK has refused to give the EU ambassador full diplomatic status.
The UK has just given Myanmar's replacement ambassador to the UK, appointed by the military junta who just staged a violent coup, full diplomatic status.
#Newsnight
How broken is the UK? Very broken. This is the message from a German shoe designer for its British customers. A farce.
Read this and try not to break anything in your rage.
Brexit has made ordering shoes from Germany v complicated and expensive.
The retailer in question has had to dedicate a large part of its FAQ to Brexit-related issues that are likely to crop up, including incorrect handling of charges within the UK. ⬇️
One day the BBC will make a documentary about Brexit. About what a huge mistake it was. The enormous cost of it. The corruption, lies and incompetence that led to it. The total lack of planning. And it will somehow have to explain it's own role in it. I look forward to that day.
"Evil Plotters". They have bankrupted the country. They have made the country more divided than it has been in centuries. They have destroyed the fabric of our society. They have destroyed our international standing. And it is all just a joke and a game to them.
#ToryScum
"And then, after they had left us to 'take back control of their borders', they paid us £500million to protect their borders for them because they couldn't do it themselves!"
I have seen some pretty desperate stuff in
@Telegraph
, but this takes some beating. Deep down you must be so embarrassed writing stuff like this for a living
@JamesCrisp6
.
Look at this headline: it sound like these are new EU rules stealing swings from your sovereign kids!

“I voted for Brexit because I thought it was actually going to make it easier for me to buy a home and live in the Med, so many American friends of mine have one and they’re non-European. Now I can't get a long-term visa to live in my £43,000 Italian home"
"And then they boasted to have signed a world leading FTA with Australia that wouldn't have been possible had they remained with us, that gives Australian beef unbridled access to the 'UK Single Market', whilst Australia is allowed to keep their ban on importing British beef"
“Let us not forget that, while we are about to open our market to unbridled access for 🇦🇺beef, 🇦🇺 remains one of the few countries left in the world that maintains an absolute export ban for 🇬🇧beef.

I have so had it with the hypocrisy of the English (media). Today

Tell me
@KirstyWark
, how is it possible that Macron, who got 58.5% of the vote, does not have a enthusiastic endorsement for him or his programme?
1/
I don't think the Brits realise this fully yet, but with more & more councils going bust, more & more cuts to public services, more & more pollution, and more & more poverty everywhere the tourist will more & more stay away and spend their coin elsewhere.

UK ‘poorest’ nation in northwest Europe, research shows 😳
Sad. That is not world beating. Not even Europe beating ☹️
But thanks to Brexit, Global UK has a real chance of becoming the poorest nation in the whole of Europe in the foreseeable future 🤩
@SamCoatesSky
Hi Sam, could you confirm the Prime Minister was again lying when he just said in your interview the UK has the fastest growing economy in Europe? It's not true, is it? Or is Reuters telling porkies, you think?
👇
They do not want to drive on crumbling roads with countless potholes wrecking their cars. They do not want to walk in dirty streets with litter everywhere. They do not want to swim in water with sewage. They do not want to be confronted with abject poverty.
6/
It is not the wonderful bike lanes that you can cycle on through the countryside, safe from cars, from town to town, all the way from the north to the south and from the west to the east. Yes, I miss that too, but.
2/
It is me who feels so sorry for you. Really. And I do believe, 100%, the younger generations will put this straight, and if not get the UK back in the EU itself, back in the SM with FoM. I just hope it won't take too long, with too much lost for everyone.
2/
The Tories have more than doubled national debt whilst simultaneously letting all public infrastructure fall apart, and bankrupting local authorities on top, now about £100bn in debt to lenders. Surely the UK is the worst run Western country in the world
It is not even the amazing big skies, reflected in the countless lakes, rivers and canals, with windmills scattered all along them. I sure miss that.
3/
Alexa, show me a democracy where a man takes a journalist to court, is proven to have lied about meeting Russians, the judge rules that 98% of what the journo said WAS lawful & WAS in the public interest, and rules the journalist has to pay £1million+ in court costs to said man.
A dark day for freedom of the press, for everyone who cares about it and for every journalist & news organisation that believes in public interest reporting.
A statement:
This is becoming a truly disturbing country:
Marcus Decker has been warned he will lose all privileges if he talks to the media from prison, where he is serving one of the longest sentences ever passed for a non-violent protest in British history.
As we speak travel and tourism contributes about 240billion pounds to the UK economy. I have a feeling in the coming years that is about to become a whole lot less.

Speake Hoyle: "Tories, did you bully and manhandle your MPs?"
Tories: "No!"
The opposition: "Several of us saw it!"
Speaker Hoyle: "You were too far away. And took an illegal picture of what didn't happen. Not guilty, case dismissed!"
Just to make this very clear, so everyone fully understands what is happening: we were given 3 main reasons for leaving the EU.
In no particular order, one was immigrants. All these EU queue jumpers everywhere was enough to drive a sovereign insane.

#BrexitHasFailed
So it is almost 24 hours since the news broke the EU and NZ signed their FTA. And so far not a single trade expert or newspaper has compared the deal the UK managed to secure with the deal the EU got. And nobody thinks this is strange? Are they put under pressure not to compare?
@madasasnake
@snb19692
Not sure it's allowed in the UK (it is in the US), but it would be brilliant if the whole courtroom would be filled with lefty lawyers representing Steve, and really us all, in this case.
@HonestDrJohn
@danbarker
I fell in love with the UK because of people like that.
Even married an English woman, and live here now.
I fell out of love with the UK because of the people who govern here. Boy, have I fallen out of love with the UK.
Now I cannot wait to leave this country again.
Wow. A bit overwhelmed with all the replies on this tweet, and all the new followers (will try follow back, bare with me). But do not feel sorry for me. I am here on my own free will, and can go back to Holland any time I want to (well, if my English wife lets me)

@Beany_1
@ABridgen
Good point. But personally I would concentrate on - and worry about - if I was going to be prosecuted myself first if I was Bridgen.
Dear Brits, please explain this to me. Every other day I see Johnson dressed up as this or the other. Laying bricks. Playing with syringes. Making drawings with toddlers. Ogling nurses. Does anybody think this is a good use of the time of the PM? Especially during a pandemic?
EU: "We will give €43bn in subsidies for semiconductor research!"
USA: "Not bad. WE will invest $52bn to become a global leader. And you, UK?"
UK: "We will invest £1bn over 10 years to become a global player. AND £100m now on top!"
EU & USA: * ROFL *
And, I asked? Terrible, mum said.
They were shocked at the poverty. So much poverty, and so bad. And then there was the dirt and the litter. So dirty. And the toilets in the restaurants were frankly disgusting.

Nadhim Zahawi: “This country has given me everything. I came here aged 11 with nothing, not speaking 1 word of English. I have lived the British dream. I want to delivery the opportunity for every child in the country, every family”
"But not for other foreigners. Fuck them."
@AlStewartOBE
@MichaelPiliOCod
Dear god. Where to begin. The ECHR isn't a military organisation. It is a court that judges if members of the European Council who signed and ratified the European Convention of Human Rights are not violating it.
And guess what, Einstein.

I can't believe how many people are insulted, of feel attacked personally, by my post. This is NOT an attack on Birmingham, or the people of Birmingham. This is what would happen ANYWHERE in Europe where the govt would cut back central govt funding by up to 50% for a decade.

Can somebody explain to me why English universities have to charge £9,250 pa to be world leading, but up to 1998 they were free and world leading?
Thanks in advance!
Looking at the comments about Brexit from the Sunderland audience on
#bbcqt

@UKLabour
are misjudging the people's mood on Brexit massively and are making a huge mistake ruling out the SM, a CU and / or FoM
And to all those who tell me our devout Catholic Prime Minister is praying....
Sure, just as they were all praying in this picture. Same body language, same poses.
The food was not good. And, and this was quite strange, it proved very hard to pay by card. It was remarkable how many card machines were not working, and they had to pay cash. Until the 4 of them didn't have enough cash, then suddenly the card machine was fixed.
3/
@OliverDowden
@Keir_Starmer
Hilarious stuff. Do you think you can send a letter to Johnson too, demanding him to retract his comments about Starmer and Saville he made in the HoC, apologise to Starmer and correct the record for misleading Parliament about that?
1/
Always worth retweeting this. And especially on a day Matthew Elliott, of the (former) Conservative Friends of Russia, gets a life peerage.
"MI5 refused to investigate ‘Russian spy’s’ links to Tories, says whistleblower"
@Channel4News
@krishgm
Can somebody, anybody, please ask a Tory if they don't feel stupid now for not taking time to study the withdrawal agreement before signing it? They rushed it through without having the time to read, study & discuss it, and mocked the experts who said it would lead to this.
@bbclaurak
Don't you find it even a little bit strange that as recently as at least April, Paterson and his daughter had no idea why his wife had committed suicide. But suddenly they remember it was the "witch hunt" aimed at Owen that drove her to it? No?
@maitlis
Woke Amsterdam is a 15 minute city. Full of cyclists who are not even making 20mph, all going to their nearby artisan (coffee) shops etc! It's a hellhole I was lucky to escape after more than 3 decades living there.

EU: market of 450m people 21 miles east of the UK. This Brexit will make our GDP in 10 years 4% smaller than it would have been.
Australia: market of 25m people 9,443 miles away. Deal might make our GDP grow 0.02% in 15 years, but might cost us our farmers.
That's why.

I am not laughing at him, in fact feel sorry. I am more angry at the BBC etc given so much credibility to Vote Leave (£350m pw for the NHS) in the name of "balance", without stating they were lying shites. I am despairing at him and his mates only feeling disappointed. Be furious
Brexit Britain, world leading country:
- Highest electricity bills in the world.
- Highest university fees in the world.
- Highest childcare costs in the world.
- Highest public transport fees in Europe, probably the world.
- Lowest state pension in the developed world.

What a weird tweet from the self-proclaimed man who brought us Brexit. You people promised us our food would be of the same or even higher quality & standards and cheaper on top. Are you now telling us that was all a lie?
@AlStewartOBE
@MichaelPiliOCod
Bosnia (and the other parties at war there) were not members of the European Council and had not signed up and ratified the European Convention on Human Rights at the time. So what you expect the ECHR could have done then, is not clear to me.
2/
For 6 years we have been told that 52% of the vote was a great endorsement to take the whole country out of the EU. And even worse, Johnson only getting 43.6% apparently got an enormous mandate from the people to make Brexit as hard as possible and fuck half the population.

When you allow Russians to fund your government, do not be surprised if you end up with Russian policies and suppression - old Phil proverb.
@andreajenkyns
Remarkable, that either no other country in Europe has had to cancel 1000s of driving tests because of covid, or that those 1000s of cancellations somehow did not cause a shortage of HGV drivers. Why is that, Andrea? Any idea? Any at all? Something beginning with B maybe?
@Channel4News
What sort of a person are you to vote for Pauline Latham to represent your constituency? Unless the other candidate was Atilla the Hun.
Forget that, even then, what sort of a person are you to vote for Pauline Latham?
@romillyweeks
@itvnews
Very moving, but one point of criticism Romily. Could you please stress it's people driving from all over Europe to offer refugees a lift & a room, apart from people from the UK . Because the UK government forbids them from doing that! It is very important the people here know it
This is truly outrageous. The PM doesn't realise that ending free movement for EU citizens into the UK will work the other way. She fumbles, consults paragraphs and says the EU won't end similar rights for British people.
Thanks
@PeteWishart
for challenging her on this. Galling.
@darrengrimes_
Yeah Darren, it has nothing to do with Trump releasing the current Taliban leader and 5,000 taliban militants, without involving the Afghan people, and indeed against their wishes.
"Reasoned". By Darren Grimes.
And you started by saying the far right did better than ever before in France. Could you please compare the manifesto from Le Pen with the Tory manifesto, and explain to me the differences between them? I mostly see similarities between Le Pen and the Tories.

Dear

You have put in place all these handy warnings at Trumps tweets. Could you please introduce them with Redwoods tweets as well, because my bullshit detector keeps going off the scales with his tweets.
Thank you.

When asked by farmers what the government is doing about the trade barriers with the EU, Sunak replies he's working very hard with individual countries to ease this.
So he is lying, as re EU trade barriers you only talk to the EU & not individual EU countries.
Does that mean we have a far right problem in the UK too, and is it doing better in the UK than ever before as well? Or are these views only far right in France, but perfectly decent conservativism in the UK?
I must admit, I am very confused. Hope your answers will help me.

Here is one for you Ant. If I were to buy a single ticket now to travel by train from Groningen to Maastricht in the Netherlands today (a distance of 335km, so just over Manchester to London) that would cost me EUR 27.90 for a single.

@DouglasKMurray
Could you explain in your own words what the ECHR has to do with Brexit and the EU? Shouldn't be to hard for someone who has written 7 books.
Let that sink in. 20% of councils going bust. Be furious with your politicians who let this happen. And not with some guy pointing out how shocked some foreigners were visiting Birmingham.
I even got a follower tell me Birmingham is not that bad, and Amsterdam, THAT is crap 🤪

Westminster to Scotland: forget it, you will need our consent, and you'll not get it for another 50 years at least.

PM "let the bodies pile high" whilst he had party after party. Inventor of the "oven-ready" deal that shouldn't be put in the oven (we negotiated a deal that would have been fantastic if only the EU hadn't implemented it which we believed they wouldn't. 🤪)

Agree. But it would be nice if someone actually confronted the governnent with this and the 100s of millions wasted on the Nightingales, instead of just letting them get away with it again.
