Corpus Christi, the Catholic Church in Pacific Palisades, was lost during the firestorm earlier this week. It was a beautiful contemporary church with a great K-8 school attached. I was fortunate to be the PE teacher and coach there decades ago and occasionally attend Sunday Mass there. My home church, St Monica’s opened their doors and hearts to Corpus Christi parishioners this afternoon. It was an emotional Mass, Msgr. Liam Kidney, pastor of Corpus Christi Church, presided over a packed house of people whose houses were burned down and those whose houses survived. There were hugs, tears, and reunions of Palisadians whose lives have now changed forever. It was an emotional afternoon at St Monica’s. Here’s a news article about the afternoon.

The devastation we are all seeing and feeling from the various fires surrounding Santa Monica is hard to imagine, let alone digest. While I remain evacuated, my residence still stands and all evidence points to no negative effects in our city. However, the businesses, churches, markets, and parks I have patronized in Pacific Palisades my entire life have evaporated. The hundreds of houses that have been destroyed in the community that adjoins Santa Monica is heartbreaking. My heart goes out to those suffering unimaginable loss in Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and elsewhere. Please open your hearts, houses, and pocketbooks to those suffering. The PTSD from this disaster will linger for decades. Peace, understanding, and love to all who are suffering.
