I was on the Late Show w/Stephen Colbert for weeks at a time between 2016 and 2020, and looked at sheet music maybe twice, ever. Most of the time, we didn't even have time to rehearse. Jon would play something in our ears and we had to catch it WHILE Stephen is talking LIVE

Pack it up. How anyone with a brain can listen to this cat spout this rampantly ignorant BS about jazz and the blues is beyond me. Just keep listening to people who actually play this music for a living.
The harmony is not that all that different. You can analyze almost 95% of Jazz via
Schenkerian. The instruments are literally the fucking same LOL. Jazz/blues is not "largely improvised," though I can understand why you'd feel that way if you have no background in music.

Groove music is "recognized" in Japan, but only the musicians who make it are the ones who care about it like that.
Can you feel the groove of funk?
