My dispatch for @TelGlobalHealth following a week in Togo to report on the epidemic of road fatalities caused by an uncontrolled motorcycle boom. Replicated across Africa’s rapidly expanding cities, the constant influx of critically injured riders overwhelms Togo’s busy hospitals

Togo’s largest trauma unit is awash with the blood of motorcycle riders. The patient’s limbs are fractured, scalps gashed and feet twisted. Every day is the same – a relentless production line of injury which the hospital must triage. Dispatch - free⬇️

Dispatch for @TelGlobalHealth I visited a school on the silt island of Bhola which is part of a Bangladeshi programme to keep children in education to prevent child marriage. 60% of families practice child marriage, according to recent research

Thinking today of the many Syrian exiles I met in Jordan, Lebanon and across Europe, fleeing Assad's barrel bombs and persecution. People like Ahmed, a court clerk, in Zaatari refugee camp, and surgeon brothers Hassan and Mohammed, in South Wales #Syria #Assad #AssadRegime

Dispatch for @TelGlobalHealth from parched terrain above Marsabit, Kenya, where I learned how disappearance of traditional pastures is having unexpected effects: girls forced further from homes are being raped and communities are engaged in violent disputes over grazing territory

‘My screams went unheard’: Women and girls suffer in Kenya’s worst drought in 40 years. Climate change isn’t only normalising acute malnutrition – it is exposing drought migrants to increased sexual violence and child marriage. ✍️@ParryTom

An honour to attend the funeral of Don Sheppard in Basildon today. Don lived until the age of 104, but more importantly lived with vigorous enthusiasm. He devoted himself to the memory of fallen comrades in his latter years but never glorified war once. A shining example.

@henrywinter @villareport Well said, Henry. One of the greatest aspects of being a Villa fan in the recent ascendancy after some very bleak seasons was that ticket prices remained affordable. I fear that the loyal fan base is not what most concerns those running the club.
