Nuclear medicine scans are often used to find large (abnormal) parathyroid gland(s) before surgery. They can also identify an abnormal parathyroid gland in an “ectopic” or unusual location in the chest. #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2024 @TheAACE @ParaTroupers1 @TheEndoSociety

Can I have primary hyperparathyroidism with a "normal" calcium level? Yes, it's possible. Looking at test results together can help make the diagnosis. #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2024 @TheAACE @ParaTroupers1 @TheEndoSociety

Do I have primary hyperparathyroidism? If blood calcium levels are normal & PTH is elevated, maybe there's another cause (called "secondary hyperparathyroidism"). Chronic kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency, or medications may have a role. #CheckYourCalcium @ParaTroupers1

Most people have 4 parathyroid glands that are located close to the thyroid. The upper (superior) parathyroid glands are located deeper in the neck, while the lower (inferior) parathyroid glands are more towards the front of the neck. #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2024 @ParaTroupers1
