Usually I don't pay attention to shit like this but I feel it needs to be said - stop comparing indie shows to one another. The shows this is referring to were made by teams with professional backgrounds, not to mention paid.
There is no standard indie animation needs to follow.

I don't care if I get hate for this - for indie animation to thrive, the audience needs to lower its expectations.
We're here, and we're working on our stuff, but we're going unnoticed. We can't all meet the standards (and have the budgets) of TADC and HB.

Hi. I'm "indie". My show makes $30 a month on Patreon. My freelacing work gets me $2k a month before taxes.

You're asking for artists with programs that can cost over 1k (or at LEAST $30/mo) to work for you for free when free programs will probably do just fine for volunteer stuff? Really?

Here's a harsh truth about indie animation. I've been working to turn my webcomic into an animated series since 2019.
Since then, I've spent just under 10k on Swift Spark.
I've only made roughly 1k of it back.
If you're not ready for that kind of commitment, don't go indie.

If you're going to ignore EVERY small creator because they don't fit some arbitrary standard set by the EXCEPTION, they will never be able to reach said expectation, because you refuse to allow them - let alone help them - to grow.

I'm just hoping people will give my pilot a fair chance. It's not HH or Lackadaisy level, I can't afford that. But it's the best I could do with the resources I had, and it's not fair to dismiss someone who gave their all for over a year to realize their dream.

Give something that looks less polished or doesn't update frequently a chance for a change. Take a peek behind the curtain of the "Big 3" and see what else is out there that nobody seems to be paying attention to. Lift up the small voices, that's the only way to help them grow.

"make your own stuff" only works if you either 1. do it entirely for yourself in your free time (...so... not for an audience at all which defeats the point they were making), or 2. don't get pushed away because "it doesn't look as good as/feel like/fall in line with xyz".

TVPaint 12 costs at least €400 even for students. Harmony Essentials is €500 perpetually or €360/yr (as of writing). I hope y'all don't expect people to come rolling up w/ Harmony Premium.

What’s coolest about this is that these characters are owned by the ARTIST who created them, not some giant studio. Which means the profits go directly back to the creative team & not IP hoarding exec middlemen. Dream scenario!

...it'll all look something like "Channel Awesome" did back in the 2000s. The capital is more important than you think. Many of us are just scraping by.
We’re going to see a lot of people saying “Just do indie!” to writers and actors, like when the animation layoffs happened, and I’m begging people to really ask themselves where they think that funding is coming from. Really think about it.
