Palestine Writes applauds Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri for taking a moral stand against ill-disguised anti-Palestinian racism. Lahiri refused to accept the 2024 Isamu Noguchi Award from the Noguchi Museum in New York after instituted a new dress code banning the Palestinian keffiyeh in particular, and in general anything that represents political speech. The new policy came after the Noguchi Museum’s recent firing of three of its employees for wearing the keffiyeh. It was an assault on their freedom of speech and expression, which we also see as a repudiation of Palestinian humanity. We applaud Lahiri’s act of solidarity and defense of people’s right to express their own solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are being murdered, starved, and terrorized in Israel’s genocidal bombing and colonization campaign. To date, at least 200,000 Palestinians have been murdered, and some estimates are as high as 500,000 dead. It is vital that institutions not restrict people from expressing their horror and outrage at this extraordinary injustice, and it is necessary for writers and cultural workers to stand up to institutions who attempt to sanction such speech.

he International Women's Media Foundation (@IWMF) rescinded Maha Hussaini's Courage in Journalism Award 2024 amidst a Zionist smear campaign. Maha Hussaini bravely states, 'I have no regrets about any posts or reasons that led to the rescinding of this award, and I will not stop expressing my views. Before being a journalist, I am a Palestinian living under military occupation, a strangling blockade, and genocide in Gaza.' She also calls attention to the hundreds of Palestinian journalists murdered by Israeli Occupation forces. This blatant act of silencing underscores the urgent need to defend press freedom and uphold the voices of Palestinian journalists

@Vanessid @Mirna_elhelbawi do you still have e-sims? I know a few families in Gaza who desperately need them, as they were just forced to flee for the 8th time since October and this time they're literally in the streets with no place to go. they need some connection

The beauty and brilliance of #Gaza will always shine through her artists. And when Gaza rises from the ashes, it will be in song and dance and prose and art and brilliance.

Interlink Books has long been one of the best presses bringing us Palestinian voices. Their latest is the debut novel by Asmaa Alatawna, a stunning and empowering look at life in — and out — of #Gaza.

Palestine Writes recommends the debut novel by long time activist and scholar Steven Salaita. The novel is breathtaking in its scope and themes, and it marks a dynamic new voice in Palestinian American fiction.

as Palestinians continue to bury family members daily by the hundreds, including our established, emerging, and yet unknown writers in Gaza, this principled solidarity from individuals gives us some comfort. thank you: @drovarela, @CAMONGHNE, @EugeniaLeigh, @guszeineddine, @estherlallen, @ManderNick, @halfmoonpoem, @KyzerLarissa, Hanna Leliv, @PSaranj, Jenna Tang, @mayabinyam, @kyledillonhertz. we are strong and better together.

I withdrew my work from consideration for the Jean Stein Award. I can't align myself w/ a human rights org that waits 5 months to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, while platforming zionists & pretending there's nuance to genocide. ✊🏽🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸 ✊🏽@wawog_now ✊🏽@united_PEN

there are people in this world who care more about justice, freedom, and universal dignity than they do their own careers. thank god for those people. they divert the sun to shine on those languishing under boots and bombs.

Despite my deep gratitude to the judges who believed in my book, BIANCA, I have withdrawn from consideration for the 2024 PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry. I made this choice in keeping with the boycott sustained against @penamerica, and in solidarity with Palestine. 🧵
