Meanwhile, on a bus in Galway, 20+ excited Spanish students got on and instantly killed the silence with their exuberance. Two American tourists, who were seated behind me, commented that “it’s lovely to hear the locals speaking Gaelic”. I said nothing.

An American tourist asked me why do traffic lights in Galway make a loud beeping noise when you press the button to cross the street. I explained that it is to assist blind people. She was astonished and asked “do blind people drive in Ireland?”

In 1992, Galway United were 2-0 down away to Monaghan Utd at half time but scored 7 in the 2nd half. When the team bus arrived back outside Kno Kno’s Knite Klub on Eglinton St., they were greeted with a shower of boos. Aertel had mistakingly displayed the score as a 7-2 defeat.
