We have been reflecting on our project in Norfolk last year. We were commissioned to remove this inappropriate plasterboard ceiling and replace it with something to suit this 17th century house. We used appropriate tools, materials and techniques for this authentic finish.

Each piece of enrichment on this new in situ cornice here at Castle Howard is individually hand made and applied. Over 2000 pieces so far. The frieze designed by Francis Terry and modelled by Luke Preston. Hand crafted by my sons and I.

Today we have completed this in situ Regency style ceiling. The apple corner detail is a reference to Sir Isaac Newtons family that once lived here and of course our scallop shell. Centrepiece supplied by R S Plaster Mouldings.

Here in sunny Surrey this week working to conserve Englands oldest plaster ceiling. Things are beginning to look finished. All of the props have been removed and the ceiling is stable. We are filling the worst of the cracks and repairing a few areas that had collapsed.

We are hand carving this wood mould to wet cast this fleur de lys pattern from the 16th century for an upcoming project. Carving by hand will result in imperfections giving the end result an authentic finish.

Tomorrow we will complete the conservation of Englands oldest ceiling. Using a bespoke group of techniques areas of the ceiling displaying various issues have been stabilised.Claudia Fiocchetti will touch in our work then it can be enjoyed by visitors for many years to come.

New project started today in Surrey. West Horsley Place has within it the oldest (1547) plaster ceiling in England. Known as the Geraldine ceiling it is in a very poor state. Over the next few weeks the team will install several different systems of suspension to make it safe

We have just about finished the lathing of this new ceiling in Yorkshire. The Cornice brackets are fixed ready for lathing on Monday and then we can apply the first coat of lime plaster.

The importance of the correct filling of cracks in plaster is often overlooked. Materials such as gypsum are used inappropriately poorly. Here we are injecting a soft lime and powdered marble deeply into the cracks to create a long lasting repair.
