And on this, read @wereontheditch: 'Journalists and politicians share the same class interests, the same beliefs about how society should function and occupy complementary positions in producing ideology that legitimises the ruling class.'

In a national poll last month, 75% said 'yes' to continuing Irish neutrality. The casual dismissal of this popular view is typical of how this 'non-debate' led by conservative commentators like Dan O'Brien goes.

A referendum on neutrality would bring focus on an issue that the moderate majority don’t fret much about. The arguments of the fringe who sacralised ‘neutrality’ and demonise nato would be exposed. Might be the only way to get everyone thinking about our defencelessness.

It becomes clearer by the day that there is a concerted effort by the Government, under pressure from the EU, to undermine Ireland's neutrality. Every opinion piece is repeating the same line - the absence of actual debate is worrying.

A week after the Dept of Defence warned that the EU was becoming 'less tolerant' of Ireland's neutrality, a law has been drafted to remove Ireland's triple lock - opening the door to Irish troops being deployed overseas for conflict, not peacekeeping.
