New IZA DP: The gender wage gap is much narrower when jobs are covered by collective agreements with less local flexibility among Swedish blue collar workers. Effects are largest when women are few, or rents are scarce:

Quite surprised, I follow some 450 accounts, almost only economists, and 180 of those were also found in the sky. Not bad at all.

Returning home from a seminar visit at St Andrews - such a nice visit! Probably the most scenic Econ Department in the world, some very nice and clever economists, @DavidAJaeger and others, and delicious haggis to end it all.

@economoser Personally no, that would have been nice. In the family home/ museum yes ( but few). I should have bought before this, they used to be fairly affordable, but may be more expensive now...

Karin stopped painting upon marriage, and this is to me her strongest work. Most of her legacy is in textile and design, popularized in her husband Carls paintings of their home. I spend most of my free time managing their estate so its all very dear to me

Always found it curious that track-and-field athletes run with these obviously non-aerodynamic clothes and hairdos - so I found this article intriguing - just using better socks (!) could have changed the winner in the 100m race!

I like this paper a lot. A very innovative use of register data to describe spillovers through direct linkages between scientists and the outside world. Clever stuff!

Knowledge spillovers from universities: it is as if we do not really take them seriously if they aren't specifically patentable spillovers on industry. But a lot of knowledge is not patentable, and the major part of a modern economy isn't industry. (1/9)

I really liked this article about non-social biases in LLMs. Smart, fun, and thought provoking.

Can LLMs replace human subjects in social science? A thread on our latest paper. TL;DR: to date, they cannot really, because they exhibit an unnoticed pattern we call “machine bias”. 1/n
