So yesterday my wife and I realized a 10-year dream by seeing
@LeTour
in person. Our jerseys are a tribute to longtime broadcaster Paul Sherwen, who was our summer soundtrack for more than a decade.
@PhilLiggett
@bobkeroll
Disappointing but entirely unsurprising day for progress in disc golf. Love to all the trans players out there - you still have a lot of people in your corner, even if it doesn't feel like it right now.
I'm not sure I can add much to the conversation right now that hasn't already been said. Instead, here are links where you can purchase tour series discs of rad women who support inclusion in disc golf:
My least favorite disc golf commentary lately is some variation of "Ugh Hailey King looks like she would rather be doing anything other than throwing a disc, why is she even here?" It's got big "you should smile more" energy directed toward a young woman and it's gross.
Big big congrats to Natalie Ryan for not only battling that beast of a course, but also everything else. I hope she knows there are a lot of people out there who do support her.
Big shouts to
@bagelpowered
for playing to win today instead of playing to not lose. Not the outcome she wanted, but that's how you get the right one in the future.
DGPT skill competition is fun and has tons of potential but give me a little more onsite hype! Get some jams pumping in the background, have an announcer calling out shots - more home run derby, less disc golf tournament for this one.
Always so interesting how disc golf dudes come out of the woodwork to cry "protect women" when a transgender player is succeeding...but like literally never any other times. I'm sure they're all just too busy watching FPO otherwise to comment. 😂
Gotta put some respect on the Jonesboro Open's name.
- PGA Tour-style signage behind the tee boxes
- Giant video board at tournament central
- Distance markers on the course
Just a super, super underrated venue for disc golf.
It'd be great to be able to read more than 3 comments about transgender athletes without encountering rampant misgendering that reveals the motivations for restricting these athletes is bigotry, not science or "fairness."
Reminder: Paul McBeth is donating his earnings to his charitable foundation this season, which means the Paul McBeth Foundation just made an extra $20K.
And I'll for sure be rooting for McBeth to take down the DGPT Championship and make it $50K total.
My hottest take on disc golf right now: People in the sport across the board just need to be less defensive. Embrace what we are. Enjoy the ride. But also listen to feedback and get better. So much potential if we take down the walls.
At coffee shop this morning:
Girl behind counter: (not joking) “has anyone told you that you look like Tony Hawk?”
Me: yes, so much that I sometimes write about it.
Her: haha, here’s your coffee
Other girl by exit: (leans toward me as I walk out): “you really do look like him”
So so so appreciate Eagle wearing a mask in his post-round interview. That interview is not socially distanced and he's helping to set an example. (Plus, smart branding opp.)
Not going to dignify this org with a reply or RT. Just here to say that transphobia and hatred have no place in disc golf. I hope the community summarily dismisses efforts like these for the trash they are. 🚮
We should be talking more about Holyn Handley.

She's gonna get a big one soon.
I'd like to finally see the upcoming PDGA board summit get the livestream treatment. I think it'd go a long way toward making members feel more invested, and transparency is always a good thing.
*Some personal news* I’m excited to share that I’ve been hired as the marketing director for
@UDiscApp
!
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Matt, Josh, Monica, Dan, and Alex several times over the last few years, and I’m stoked to join their team.
"I just want people to know I'm not some kind of monster out here."
If that doesn't break your heart to see how the backlash impacts her then I can't help you. I hope, as supporters, we can all work to be better allies. No one should have to live like that.
I wrote a thing about the thing. Thanks to everyone who's read and sent kind words so far. I truly can't get over that I was there in person and had to pour out some thoughts:
Lost in the spicy disc golf industry news today: Simon Lizotte shot the hot round and went 9/9 in C1X at All-Stars with his new bag. That's...pretty good.
Cat won LVC last year in her first tournament with a new company. Just sayin'.
Things I would do if I ran the PDGA (lol), a short but non-exhaustive list:
1. Drop the magazine, or make it digital-only
2. Run fiber under WR Jackson
Missed out on my last couple days of Worlds tweets, but holy shit.
I can't believe what I saw today. Being in that crowd is one of the most incredible experiences of my life and I'm truly grateful. A collective explosion of shock, bewilderment, joy, and more. Wow.
Transgender players in FPO have to undergo a tremendously long, invasive process to even participate there, so lose me with all of the "biological advantage" rabble rabble chorus. They are not coming there to ruin women's experience. They are coming there to belong.
Wild stat: Nikko Locastro's win today is his first at a PDGA Elite Series event (National Tour+Disc Golf Pro Tour) since 2011. Dang. That last W came at the Alabama Disc Golf Championship (NT) on May 15, 2011.
As a reformed member of the disc golf media, I'm keenly interested in how DGPT/DGN handle the Gannon Buhr situation this week.
On the one hand, there is little incentive to potentially alienate one of thetop talents on tour - as well as a company that sponsors several events. 1/
A different player in the MPO division won each
@pdga
National Tour event this year (Wysocki, McBeth, Hammes, O'Reilly, Ford).
As far as I can tell, this is the only time this has ever happened in the tour's 18 seasons.
Pro Worlds Day 1 thoughts:
-Holy crap it's hot here
-Eagle caught some bad skips and unlucky spitouts and is still only 2 back
-Let's hope the pace picks up a bit at The Fort.
-Paige's over-the-fence putt was incredible
-Holy crap it's hot here
The
@PDGA
has announced new rules around transgender participation in the sport.
It restricts participation in FPO Majors for transgender women to those who "began medical transition during Tanner Stage 2 or before age 12, whichever is later."
It's me, your friendly former UWDG reporter and PDGA communications manager here with some thoughts on the "Q&A" re: the PDGA's new transgender policy. (Q&A in quotes because Q is doing a loooot more work than A.) 🧵
@Crunchy_DG
I think it's fine if people think trans players shouldn't play in F divisions and can communicate that respectfully - I don't personally agree but understand their concerns.
My issue is with the misgendering/deadnaming/abusive sect that seem to find their way to it every time.
My lukewarm take: Most disc golf commentators have not yet developed a sense of gravitas. Maybe people don't want that? But I think it could be useful this week.
After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.
The whole thread, but *especially* this tweet.
"Disc golf is so welcoming" shouldn't end at gender identity. If you're gonna say it's inclusive, then do it.
The fact that some players are better than others is just that, a fact, and is not because someone is trans or not. So can we get over ourselves and realize that in a sport that preaches that it’s for everyone actually act like it and put inclusion first? 7/
Disc Golf Network's whiparound coverage just keeps getting better, tracking the top 4 players on 3 different cards making a charge at DGLO. Props to
@chikago12
,
@Jvphobic
, and the rest of the crew.
@PaDiscGolfer31
To see this as precedent-setting you need to see it as a problem needing a solution, which I will grant I do not see it as. Trans women aren't dominating FPO, and for PDGA - a notoriously slow-moving/reactive org - to take the proactive route feels out of character and early.
The argument that other competitors are at a disadvantage because Plaintiff went through male puberty and that Plaintiff’s participation disrupts competitive fairness is unpersuasive based on the evidence currently before the Court.
@AustinHannum
@PDGA
@DiscGolfProTour
It was a bad take, man. I will commend you for starting a discussion and proving a lot of people will stand up for human rights though.
That said, this is *exactly* what press conferences are made for. And, uncomfortable or not, this is one of the most newsworthy situations the sport has seen in recent memory.
I'm glad I'm not making the choice, but I hope they at least *ask* a question or two. 2/2
Lowkey some of my favorite disc golf content this year has been the DGN/
@discgolfprotour
press conferences. Love to get the know the players more - a much-needed add to the regular offerings elite events are delivering.
I've seen
@Thrice
a dozen or so times over the years, and I'm not sure they've ever sounded as good as they did last night.
This band destroys me, every time.
Just talked to Paige Pierce about her round today. A brief summary:
-Didn't realize Jonesboro started on Friday instead of Thursday, so she ended up playing.
-Got into town last night at 11:30.
-Spilled her coffee on herself this morning before tee off.
-Shot 12-under.
Also, if any talk about transgender people was actually about fairness to women, methinks we'd hear a lot more about women's healthcare, equal pay, access to abortion, etc. But for some *weird* reason that never really comes up.
Some people show their emotions differently. Some people are just introverted despite their talents. Maybe we should just let her be who she is and appreciate her for that?
I understand folks are bummed about Champions Cup in Stockton, but the issue here is more that there just isn't a wide network of major-level event directors in the sport still.
The OTB crew is top notch, but not sure they could helicopter into another location.
Just got a message that the Jonesboro Open sold out of all 100 of their VIP passes at $75 a pop. This is a good thing for the legitimacy of the sport, imo.
The players we've talked to don't want this just swept under the rug - they want people to know what they experience and the reality of their situation. Turning off comments also doesn't allow for any support of these players, which is vitally important.
Re-upping this after meandering to some other social media platforms on the topic at hand. Hooboy, long way to go and as much as I don't always like an echo chamber...I will take the one we have here.

Really pumped to work for a company that recognizes that, even if disc golf is already pretty inclusive, it can always do better. Happy Pride Month, everyone.
One of our core values at UDisc is to include everyone. So, we’re taking time this Pride Month to celebrate the people and events making a difference in the LGBTQ+ disc golf community.
This has been in the works for a loooong time - super excited to finally release it to the wild! Gonna come in very handy here at our local SoCal courses.
🚦 Course Traffic is here!
Tired of backups on the first tee, or accidentally running into league night? Plan out your next round before you go with real-time Course Traffic on UDisc Pro. Check out more:
The action at Pro Worlds was great, and combined with the Garmin visit it was a phenomenally productive week on the whole. But I'd be lying if I said my favorite moment was anything other than meeting *another* dude named Steve with a colored mohawk. 🤣
Was rooting hard for Eagle - what a gutsy performance considering where he was early in the tournament. Hats off to Robinson, dude never blinked and makes it look so easy.
@FDG_Hunter_T
Thanks for sharing - even if someone goes in and puts in an all ace round, the sheer amount of rounds scored on UDisc ensures the model isn't being overly skewed.
Will we ever be able to stop leaderboard goofs? No. But "will never be accurate" is a bit harsh imo.
