#JustTransition principles are not just ideals - they are the foundation of #Somalia’s future. Without them, we cannot achieve a fairer, more equitable economy that uplifts all of society, especially the working masses and their communities. The good news? Somalia is already on this path. Organised labour, alongside key partners, has mobilised at both the Federal and State levels, driving forward a Just Transition that prioritises decent work, workers’ rights, social protection and, above all, social justice. Our engagements - anchored in social dialogue - in #Baidoa for the Southwest State consultation made one thing crystal clear: the momentum is unstoppable – this is an unreversible reality. The push for a fair, sustainable and inclusive future is real and the tripartite-plus actors are collectively making it happen for the sake of a just and prosperous Somalia!

The Congress of the Horn of Africa Confederation of Trade Unions (HACTU) in Nairobi (20-21 Jan 2025) brought together trade union leaders to discuss workers' rights in the Horn of Africa. With the theme "Advancing a Peaceful, Secure and Resilient Future for Workers," the congress addressed issues like insecurity, unemployment and freedom of association. A new leadership team was elected and delegates committed to implementing a five-year strategic plan, adopting resolutions on solidarity, peace, decent work and climate justice. The statutory event highlighted the crucial role of trade unions in shaping a better future for workers. @AkhatorO

Public interest journalism plays a crucial role in shedding light on the complexities of labour migration and mobility, ensuring that the voices of migrant workers are heard and their rights are protected. More importantly, shaping the African narrative on this pressing issue is gaining utmost priority with each passing day. Last week, the Federation of African Journalists (@FAJafrica), in close cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (@ILO) and with the generous support of Sweden and the UK, successfully held a continental capacity-building activity in Kigali, Rwanda. This event brought together journalists and trade unionists from across Africa’s five regions, united by their shared mission to shape the African narrative, enhance the coverage of labour migration issues and promote the rights of migrant workers. Through this collaborative effort, in close cooperation with our continental trade union organisation @ituc_africa, we aim to equip journalists with the tools and knowledge to report effectively on the challenges faced by migrant workers. At the same time, we are empowering trade unions to advocate for the protection of workers, not just within their own national borders, but even beyond #Africa. In August 2024, FAJ initiated these efforts in close coordination with the African Union Commission (@_AfricanUnion) and the International Organisation for Migration (@IOM) to foster a more informed, equitable and just approach to labour migration across Africa. We are collectively taking bold steps to ensure that migrant workers' rights are recognised, protected and promoted, both within #Africa and internationally.

Engaging in dialogue with civil society on critical human rights issues is essential for fostering cooperation and complementarity between the government and civil society. Such frank discussions help address key challenges and advance a shared, progressive human rights agenda. During yesterday's meeting with civil society organisations (CSOs), Minister @KhadijaMakhzumi attentively listened to pressing human rights concerns and outlined her Ministry's priorities. CSOs agreed to collaborate on these priorities for the benefit of the country, as we recognise that this constructive exchange sets the stage for continued dialogue that upholds and strengthens human rights principles.
