Has anyone else been unwell for, like, 3 weeks now? It's not Covid. But I've had every symptom under the sun and it's not easing up, even on antibiotics. Lots of people I know having similar issues. What is this?
I loved speaking to
@GemmaAnneStyles
for this week's ep of
#MillennialLove
about female friendship, why it's fetishised in popular culture, and how our friendships change as move through our 20s and 30s
I am living for this piece. 'I went to a nice store I’d never been inside before and I tried something on. The clerk asked me what the occasion was. I found out from Facebook that my ex-boyfriend was dating Lady Gaga, I told her'
Don’t lump Caroline Flack’s death in with those of Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis. Just because three people connected to one TV show tragically took their own lives, it doesn’t mean they did so for the same reasons and it’s damaging to simplify their deaths in such terms.
This is the
@MichaelaCoel
profile I've been waiting for and oh my god it does not disappoint. How wonderful to learn that she rejected Netflix's offer of $1m for I May Destroy You cos they wouldn't let her retain the copyright.
This week on
#MillennialLove
I talk to
@TheVampsJames
about body dysmorphia and the impact it can have on relationships and mental health. Thank you for being so honest about your experiences, James.
I sound much better with a French translator. I spoke to
@France2londres
about why everyone is hating on Meghan Markle and why they can jog on because she's doing a brilliant job.
❤️EXCITING NEWS❤️I’m writing a book! Published by the wonderful
@4thEstateBooks
,
#MillennialLove
is based on the podcast I host for
@Independent
and explores all of the absurdities of the contemporary dating landscape. The book will be out in Summer 2021. I am beyond excited.
Really enjoyed writing about EMDR. Such a fascinating treatment that can be transformational for many people, including Louise who kindly spoke to me for this piece. Kudos to Prince Harry for raising awareness of it in
#TheMeYouCantSee
✨some news✨ I’m over the moon to announce that my debut novel, Gold Rush, will be published by
@4thEstateBooks
in 2024. This has been a lifelong dream. I can’t wait for you to meet Rose and read her story.
I became mildly obsessed with
@iamnovoamor
's music during lockdown, so it was a treat to meet him (over Zoom) and discuss how heartbreak influenced his songwriting, why he's not the Eeyore-ish character his fans might expect, and being compared to Bon Iver
Again, regardless of who did what and who you believe or don’t believe, this message is what matters most. The message all this sends to survivors of domestic abuse everywhere: you must have imagined it. The irony is it’s the same message abusers send their victims.
“If you didn't seek medical treatment, you weren't injured. If you did seek medical treatment, you're crazy… if you finally decide that enough is enough, you've had enough of the fear, enough of the pain and you have to leave to save yourself, you're a gold digger”
#DeppVsHeard
I was disappointed to hear what
@jameelajamil
said about
@carolinecaloway
on a podcast this week. Calloway might be controversial, but this conversation sounded like a scene out of Mean Girls – and Jamil had never even heard of Calloway before recording.
I've never really written about this before. It has taken years for me to realise that I had a right to feel violated by what happened to me. I really hope that this resonates with other women who have gone through this.
I had such a wonderful time speaking to
@matthaig1
about the hypocrisy of the mental health conversation today, what keeps him on Twitter, and the parallels between Reasons to Stay Alive & his new book, The Midnight Library.
My iPhone Notes has become a compendium of unsent texts, weird to-do lists, funny things my mum says, and drunken epiphanies and I will never let anyone read any of it. It is my safest space – and I've written about why
Why didn't the government consider the nation's libidos at the start of lockdown? Couples who don't live together can't touch, and single people are approaching their third month of enforced celibacy. So, yes, people have started breaking the rules for sex.
At this point, I simply don't understand what Prince Harry hopes to gain from any of this. Airing family trauma in public like this is going to do nothing but cause further damage to everyone involved. I feel sorry for all of them.
I know it’s not ‘cool’ to admit to this stuff anymore, but since lockdown started, my body image has taken a real nose dive, so I wrote this in case others thought they were the only ones. You’re not.
Popular culture has a lot to answer for when it comes to the myths we attach to rape.
#IMayDestroyYou
rewrites the narrative.
@MichaelaCoel
is a genius.
I'm so pleased to finally share this very special ep of
#MillennialLove
with
@emrata
– we discuss female sexuality, feminism, power, beauty, sexual violence, and so much more. Listen here:
So men can get beard trims, but women can’t get their eyebrows waxed? I spoke to beauty salons about how a long-held misconception that their industry is superficial has led the government to prioritise male grooming & put many jobs & businesses at risk
Ok now a few people have watched it I'll say it. So far,
#AndJustLikeThat
feels like a devastating betrayal to everything the show was about. Also, the whole 'look how woke we are now' thing feels clumsy and misguided. I'm sad today.
The
#SAVAGEXFENTYSHOW
was everything Victoria's Secret is not and must become if it's to continue in 2019. Kudos to
@rihanna
for putting on the kind of lingerie show women have waited years for.
Why do women's magazines that peg themselves as empowering and feminist continue to publish 'worst-dressed' roundups? Criticising and shaming women is the least empowering and least feminist thing you can do. This is not rocket science.
I always thought my first viral tweet would be because I'd said something really funny and zeitgeisty. Turns out just talking about how ill and miserable you are can do the trick.
2018 has been an incredible year for women. Activists, politicians, actors, musicians and athletes fought for change. They overcame adversity. They demanded equality. They spoke up – and it finally felt like people listened. Long may it continue.
It was an honour to speak to
@rowena_chiu
. Rowena is a Harvey Weinstein survivor. We spoke about the verdict, why she doesn't like being called 'brave', & why it’s dangerous to think of sexual abuse survivors and perpetrators as victims and villains
Really enjoyed writing this piece on whether the coronavirus vaccines will help to reduce the spread. Thank you to the scientists who spoke to me and made sense of the government's ambivalent jargon – there's more to the answer than "we don't know"
It was inevitable that masks would become politicised, but why have they become gendered? Research suggests men are less likely to wear masks than women. Bolsonaro doesn't wear one. Joe Rogan said 'only bitches wear face masks'. And then there's Trump.
Hi
@Joancollinsdbe
– you said on Woman's Hour that sexual abuse didn't fracture your life because you were 'tough'. So sexual assault survivors whose lives are fractured by it are weak? Is that really your message to women? Survivors simply... need to toughen up?
Protesters are calling women 'murderers', telling them abortions give them breast cancer and throwing red liquid over them. Why did the Home Office reject calls to enforce buffer zones? My report feat
@stellacreasy
@SadiqKhan
@bpas1968
@MarieStopesUK
All I want from 2021 is to be able to see
@taylorswift13
live tbh. Folklore/evermore... the whole thing.
@maisiehpeters
let's go together. Okay thanks x
Looking to speak to women who have experienced toxicity in the workplace with other women. Also seeking expert comment. Please drop me an email today if this is you. Can be anon, of course. olivia.petter

#journorequest
I find it so bizarre that we vindicate cruel behaviour in the dating world with terms like 'ghosting', 'breadcrumbing', or 'orbiting'. So why do we do it? And where do these words even come from?
I looked into the psychology behind dating trends...
How do you navigate a seismic shift in the dating landscape when you have no idea how long it’s going to last? Really enjoyed writing this piece on the bleak impact that coronavirus has had on the way we date. It's not good, pals.
I loved
#PromisingYoungWoman
. Not because it's an excellent film (it's flawed) but because it's one of the only times I've seen the 'nice guy' trope so artfully dismantled on screen. If anyone tells you they're a 'nice guy', run.
Two deaths after Love Island. One after Jeremy Kyle. Multiple after other shows. The psychological consequences of starring on reality TV desperately need to be understood. Thank you to the contestants, producers & media therapists who spoke to me for this
I will never get over the fact that my best friends don't live in the flat opposite mine, that we don't all share the same local coffee shop, and that no one has ever told me to 'PIVOT!'
Imagine being dumped now. You can't distract yourself with a night out. You can't cry on a mate's shoulder. And you can only start dating someone else so long as you don't touch them. I spoke to people who have gone through a breakup in lockdown.
Fashion trends are supposed to be ephemeral. Whether it’s crocs or corduroy, what’s in one season is usually out the next. But there are exceptions. Occasionally, a trend stops fashion’s furiously fast cycle in its tracks. Velvet is one of those trends.
I’ve never had so many feelings as when I was watching Normal People. It is a perfect adaptation. But the relationship between Marianne & Connell is so dysfunctional, and yet what they have seems so appealing. Why do we fetishise on-off relationships?
Really enjoyed womansplaining feminism on
@GMB
this morning. Yes my voice sounds low because I have a cold. And yes I did wear red lipstick because, amazingly, feminists can wear lipstick.
@susannareid100
‘The irony is that people who feel threatened by feminism - people like Anthony, are probably the ones who need it the most’ -
@Oliviapetter1
When will greedy TV execs learn not to ruin a good thing? Obviously I’ve written about the Samantha-less return of
#SATC
, and why it’s an all-round terrible idea that is deeply distressing for die-hard fans such as myself.
This is the investigative report we've all known was coming. Victoria's Secret has been marred by controversy for years – none of these claims are surprising
I had a lovely chat with
@maisiehpeters
about being fangirled by
@taylorswift13
, why people always assume her songs are about her own life, and how ironic it is that the government keeps blaming the pandemic on young people
This doesn't surprise me at all. Every woman I know my age who can afford it has had it. Will those who haven't had it start to look odd as the botox/filler look becomes more mainstream? Instagram definitely to blame. And TikTok. So many surgery filters.
Can you imagine moving in with someone after two dates? Neither can I. But apparently that’s what many people did at the start of lockdown. I wrote about how they’re getting on.
Found it very interesting writing this piece about grooming and how it’s explored in
#CruelSummer
– it’s an incredibly complex subject that I think we could all benefit from learning more about
Obviously I loved talking to
@CynthiaNixon
about her new show, Ratched, why we rarely see 'difficult women' on-screen, why JK Rowling's tweets shouldn't stop Harry Potter fans from enjoying the books and SEX AND THE CITY.
Today is a big day. And yes, while there will be many important things to discuss, what
@KamalaHarris
wears will be one of them – at least to a certain degree. Enjoyed writing this piece about the sociopolitical power that a politician's wardrobe can have.
Has anyone else been unwell for, like, 3 weeks now? It's not Covid. But I've had every symptom under the sun and it's not easing up, even on antibiotics. Lots of people I know having similar issues. What is this?
I've written about loneliness, something that is becoming an increasing problem for people of all ages in the UK. People may be surprised at how many millennials are experiencing this but it's very common. Friendship apps might offer a solution.
Thought love in the time of corona was tough? Try being Poly. Latest ❤️ feature on how the pandemic has forced polyamorous people into monogamous scenarios that go against their ideologies
Completely disagree with the direction that Instagram is going in. What used to be a curated feed of images from people we know and are interested in has become littered with clips of dancing kittens and cakes rising in the oven. What went wrong?
I've written about how the
#CoronaLockdown
has turned our love lives upside down. I'll be writing about this quite a bit in the coming weeks, so if you have a story to share, please do get in touch!
It was a delight to speak to the brilliant
@elizabday
about failure, motherhood, that Fleabag miscarriage and reclaiming the right for women to tell their stories. We also had a good chat about aubergines.
