Rare proof that Sheffields industrial architecture can be saved and isn't it wonderful to see.

Last Friday my beautiful wife Karen was admitted to
@WestonParkCC
she fought all weekend,but lost her battle on Monday lunchtime.
We were with her at end and due to the skill and compassion of everyone on the unit, she was utterly at peace.
I will be taking a break for some time
My favourite Sheffield Street is emerging from the scaffolding like a butterfly coming out of a chrysalis. Looking amazing, hopefully some amazing businesses are signing up to fill these spaces

1978 and Sheffield United shake hands on a deal to sign 17 year old Diego Maradona for £150,000. The story goes later that night there was a visit from figures claiming to be from the Argentinian military requested a matching fee to allow Diego to sign and the deal was off.
They say don't meet your heroes. I met mine in 1966 and he was my Dad, he left us Sunday morning. Brave and dignified to the last. John 'Dennis' Stones 1938-2022. RIP

Danish fans in Orchard Square during Euro 96. I was working at Virgin and still have a Danish scarf that was given to me. Such a friendly lot and no hint of bother.
Hyde Park Flats, phone boxes, parking meters, General Post Office, old skool cars, old skool bins..

My first trip to see
@LeahsYard
today. It really is a beautifully restored place. Something for

to be proud of. Fantastic that you can go through onto Coalpit Yard to and the Cambridge Street Collective. I suspect both enterprises will be a great fit
Imperfect, but the breakthrough moment for this account. 3,000 followers later and still going strong. Thank you for your support. Special thank you to my collaborators who have being taking photos across the City during the lockdown

The 1899 FA Cup Final was contested by Sheffield United and Derby County at Crystal Palace. Sheffield United won 4–1, the winning team parading through Sheffield. With their modern counterparts celebrating promotion last night

Had a walk down Fargate today, it really is a sad shadow of its former life as Sheffields no.1 shopping street. Personally, I think decades of using it as a tacky temporary events space for fairs and markets devalued the space,hopefully the latest plans change things

At the Somme, the Sheffield City battalion, on 1 July, at 7.20 am 1916, the battalion moved into No Man's Land. In the memorable words of John Harris: "Two years in the making. Ten minutes in the destroying. That was our history."

Coalpit yard tonight, the access is now open to Cambridge Street. Not long now until
@LeahsYard
opens. I called in at Cambridge Street Collective for a pint before seeing a film at The Light. All these elements will feed off each other to build a successful mix

By popular demand, the Moor McDonald's. With a bonus view of the old branding. Probably, from around the time I was working at Music Market/Our Price down there.

Sheffield 'Pals' Battalion , parade outside Midland station. The idea was the morale of serving alongside workmates and neighbours. The reality was when the Battalion attacked on the first day of the Somme, over 500 men were lost from one city in 48 hours

Amazing to think that, after over a 100 years of being confined to a culvert, that daylight is coming to this section of the Sheaf. Once the culvert is removed the plans promise a matching parapet to this one. Then we will have a new bridge in

I know this account is a nostalgic look back at Sheffield, but been into town tonight. Seen nowt but happy friendly folks. Town centre looking great. Said to my lady , if we were on a city break I would be raving about this place

Impeccably observed Remembrance event tonight. I could only hear the rain hissing on the Kop roof. Both sets of fans fantastic. Then got home and found

dubbed crowd noise over it. So what sort of city does that nation think we are

It will continue to post about all areas of this city. Racist responses will be blocked. What is a real Sheffielder anyway ?
My dad's side came from E.Yorks in 1830's, my mums from Ireland c.1900. People have been coming here for 100's of year to make a small town a big city
My little mates get me up and out every day. They kiss away my tears and greet me when I come home. Life would be unbearable without them.
When Karen was slipping away, in Weston Park, she was still kept putting her hand down and stroking the air as if they were there.
I doff my cap to Picture Sheffield for an unrivalled archive of Sheffield images. They don't get much better than this view of Pinstone Street looking towards St Paul's and the Town Hall

Bit of fresh air this morning, nice walk with our youngest. Stopped for a Beres on the way back. This afternoon our other daughter brought the Grandkids up for a visit.
Today has been a good day 😌
It's Karen's funeral on Wednesday and I am keeping a gratitude list to help me cope.
1. Ridgeway - I live and love my life here, because of her. We live in her Grandparents old house, her parents lived here. Her sister in the next road and supportive neighbours all around ❤️
Good morning Sheffield. I took a photograph on East Parade yesterday, must be 6 times now I have tried to match the old pic and get the angle wrong every time. I think I need to lay on the floor towards the churchyard. Perhaps they moved the gateposts ?

I saw
@JohnBurkhillBEM
at the celebrations in town earlier. I almost spontaneously told him I had lost my wife to cancer too, but didn't trust myself to be able to have that conversation. John is closing in on £1m raised, I put a few quid in his bucket and headed home instead 💚
Goodbye Mum, love you Dad. What a life they had together. Kathleen Stones 1938-2020.
I will take you back, Kathleen

I'll take you to your home again!
Saddening today to see the way our parks and our public places are being abused by thoughtless entitled people. They were and are the lungs of our city, a safe place to laugh and play. They were hard fought for, ever square inch of them

The Lyceum theatre had followed the well worn story of steady decline into almost total dereliction. Permission was requested to pull it down, but it somehow stumbled on, until vision, belief (and a huge investment) transformed the building and secured its future

During the 1898–99 season Sheffield Wednesday were told that the land rented at Olive Grove would be needed for railway expansions.The 1st match at their new ground was played in 1899. The ground was known as the Owlerton Stadium until 1914, when it was renamed Hillsborough

Disgrace. Spent a fortune on a shipping container for a few months and can't stabilise a couple of chimneys on a genuine piece of character and heritage without levelling the place 😡
A short section of 1902 tram ride. Travelling onto Haymarket to the Royal Hotel at junction of Waingate and Exchange Street. Amazing view of a lost age

Sheffield has loads of folks puttng it down, but in town tonight and it's just magnificent. Cambridge Street is going to be a jewel when complete. So nearly lost to us too

Killamarsh station opened in 1892 and closed on 4 March 1963. The trackbed now forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail. Chilly walk down there this morning, sharing the route with cyclists, runners and horse riders.
They say “We can’t do that. We’re not Amsterdam.” You respond “Amsterdam wasn’t always like that either,” showing before & after transformations illustrating that cities we admire made CHOICES. They make more tired excuses. Don’t accept them. (1e van der Helststraat, 1978 & 2005)

I think as a city we get a bit blasé about the Peak District. It so accessible for us. I used to get the bus to Fox House for 2p. This was taken this morning only a 20 min walk from that bus stop. Lucky us
