Swiss Army Knife or confused GPS (?) || I have good news from Nigeria 🇳🇬
Boston, MA
Joined January 2013
I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone this story, but I’m sure a few people will be familiar with parts of it. Needless to say I don’t have anything against Muslims, or (to some extents) Islam itself. But Islamic fundamentalism is something we should all be worried about.
Today is probably a good day to talk about my little experience with radical Islamists at University of Ibadan.

There’s this famous case study in policy evaluation class. Development workers in an Ethiopian village noticed that the route women take to fetch water from a nearby source was bad and they decided to build a new road for easier access. The women refused to use the new road.
Nigerian men don't go to antenatal cuz the women generally don't want them there and cuz Dem dey go hustle money to pay for mama and pikin.

@Paytriort People are quick to bring up this issue when UI and religious extremism is being discussed. That lady did something very stupid, and deserved expulsion from the university even. But what people often leave out is that they tried to kill her for it.

I know you are duty-bound to defend the evil brokers in the country, but at least respect our collective intelligence while doing so. Vincent clearly said they had an agreement with NURTW where 20% of their revenue was going to them, yet wasn't enough to stop the harassment.
You see, this thing called entrepreneurship is not just about books alone. Not SWOT, not MRR, ARR, etc. He simply didn't understand the industry he chose and who the power brokers are. He saw NURTW as louts and a threat instead of collaborators or competitors. Either view would.

@folakemiyusuf_ This! But sometimes it could be as a result of some horrible past experience. Like they say, everyone is brave until they face a battle that’s bigger than them.

@toheebadura I’m not sure I gave the impression in my tweets that he represented all of Islam. But his actions were consistent with those who want to reform modern Islam and return to the literal interpretations of the Quran, which is the textbook definition of Islamic fundamentalism.

@00000000000vj @dnieporent @nikstankovic_ @Imported_Fun Well, Tiktok is not being banned, their license is being revoked pending certain requirements. They can meet those requirements and regain their license tomorrow.

@Eqdr101 @DavidHundeyin @pengfineboy But David didn't say he was a bad President. Just undeserving of the "best president ever" tag. Maybe you people should read tweets more carefully before making comments.

Nice gesture - if you would so kindly extend this to fixing the roads leading to Badagry.

@darleep @aledsavedlatin And there’s another professional footballer at the other end of the target, paid millions and trained for hours, with a sole job of ensuing the ball does not go in. That’s what makes it a competition.

If #Lekkimassacre had happened under a military dictator, they wouldn’t have invited Sanwoolu and Tolu Ogunlesi to CNN to explain away the murder of young, unarmed protesters. There wouldn’t be a debate on whether the massacre even happened.

Another thing. Soyinka doesn’t just use big vocabulary as a show off or to make his writings sound complicated. It’s simply a reflection of how rich his vocabulary is. Many times, he does it unintentionally. Just listen to him speak.

Or…he’s simply not ready. Why is it so difficult to acknowledge this simple fact. He’s just 18. If the coach thinks he’s not ready to compete with Lewandowski, then he’s not.
This is crazy, honestly. How do you spend 40m on an 18-year-old, amid a *financial crisis*, only for him to play no football and get loaned out the very next season?. Serious questions have to be asked, baffling stuff. Did Xavi ever even sign off on him?!.

@philips1011 I believe the lesson here is for men to support their wives how they want to be supported. I’ve seen men say they drive their wives to the clinic, wait in the car until they’re done, and bring them back home. There are no hard and fast rules here.

@iaboyeji @kharoolinee @DavidHundeyin Most of the things I mentioned were lifted directly from the article you quoted. I don't think any right thinking person would call those white elephant projects. Tourism is really not the hill to die on. Not when we still have 13m out if school children for starters.

@elnathan_john People have argued that a lot of the backlash Jonathan received was not necessarily because he was that terrible, but out of pure hatred for the man himself. If you truly agree that we currently have it worse, then why do you seem to be angrier at Jonathan that at Buhari?.

@Letter_to_Jack His growth has been phenomenal. But I won’t say it happened in a year. It’s been incremental over the years. I’d say taking up more responsibility at his club and country also contributed to his growth.

@Eqdr101 @DavidHundeyin @pengfineboy Now back to David's point. What exactly, about the man, makes him any better than OBJ or GEJ?. The point was that death somehow gives leaders an undeserving legendary status which is really a disservice to history.

@GreatDeximal She didn’t attack anyone violently. She did something stupid and was punished for it. What followed was 6 months of unrest on campus because some Muslims wanted her head. Go figure.

@Mrpossidez And that lady is pregnant! Why are people leaving that fact out of the conversation. Having a pregnant woman wake up at 5am to pack your lunch is child endangerment as far as I’m concerned.

@Solomon_Buchi @Mrpossidez There’s no stage of pregnancy where it is okay to wake up at 5am just to make lunch for a man she fears will be baited into infidelity by a work colleague’s food.

What @InibeheEffiong did - defending an APC member who faced injustice in spite of his very open disdain for the party - is stuff worthy of commendation and not trolling. But because majority of these guys cannot see beyond their noses, they woke up early in the morning to troll.

@iaboyeji @kharoolinee @DavidHundeyin I think @DavidHundeyin's point, which I very much agree with, is that there are a ton of other productive projects the govt could have spent that money on with a much more productive output. Why the obsession with tourism, when we could not even get the funds to run it?.

@WaleBalogunK @iamkorlarh I never based my view of Islam from his actions. But we must expose the extremist, intolerance, and fundamentalists for what they are and the danger they pose.

@iaboyeji @kharoolinee @DavidHundeyin But 18,000 people annually, 4 years into a $450m tourism project is poor. And you say that was not the full implementation. So how much more would they have needed to spend to attract 100,000?.

@sodeindemueez But the guy is telling a barefaced lie. You don’t need an expert to see through it. How can you say a meeting would have prevented what Vincent Adeoba what lamenting about, when Vincent clearly said they had an arrangement with NURTW, yet they struggled.

I feel very unqualified to talk about this, as I am only just starting out myself. However, since this is something I am very passionate about, my friends at @ImpactNutAfrika have asked me to speak to their volunteers about building a career in food and nutrition policy.
