I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone this story, but I’m sure a few people will be familiar with parts of it. Needless to say I don’t have anything against Muslims, or (to some extents) Islam itself. But Islamic fundamentalism is something we should all be worried about.

Sharia courts in the south west is a gateway to sharia law, and then Islamic governance. And then we would be on our way to becoming another Saudi Arabia (at best) or more likely, Afghanistan. Let’s not open that door.

There’s this famous case study in policy evaluation class. Development workers in an Ethiopian village noticed that the route women take to fetch water from a nearby source was bad and they decided to build a new road for easier access. The women refused to use the new road.

But that experience really worried me. This was someone who had spent close to 5 years in one of the country’s most liberal environments. And this was the kind of thing he occupied himself with. So imagine how bad it would be with those who have fewer exposure but more power.

I grew up in a very interesting household. My father is a Muslim and my mom is a Christian. Both of them take their religion quite seriously. But it was a lot more than that. My mom would fast during Ramadan, and my dad would come with us to the church for thanksgiving service.

My dad was friends with my mom’s pastor, and even represented the church in court once over a land dispute. So even though I became politically active very early in life, I was never exposed to Islamic fundamentalism.

They learn new strategies for navigating pregnancy. They sing and dance. They have a community. It’s their safe space. It may be a nice gesture to have husbands go with their wives, but there’s no real social issue if they do not go. Ask before you build.

It was never a thing I felt conscious about until my 2017-18 experience at University of Ibadan - a place I consider the intellectual capital of Nigeria (if not Africa). In my 300level, I had two roommates. Both Muslims. One of them was the head Imam of Tedder hall.

Lesson of the story? Ask before building. For many Nigerian women, we have learned that antenatal is one of the only opportunities they have to be away from their husbands. They cherish that time. The antenatal experience is very different from what you see in Hollywood movies.
