@KimberleyShoaf @mbeisen Yah true. I think we all know doing things via proper channels is not the plan for these folks.

@JGyrados That may be part of it. Though, I think it is more so retaliation on DEI initiatives. In Project 2025 this is called out specifically.

@TheLarchNo21 Of course I donā€™t think the NIH is actually behind it- though this notice was sent from the office of the director. More so just putting out the holes in the approach from a different direction.

@ZKForTre Ha- yah. Though I donā€™t think I am really trying to rationalize it either. Just pointing out the holes in this cut from a different angle.

@KimberleyShoaf I thought that too, but then footnote seems to indicate $30M is for NCI building and facilities and the other is general appropriations? I looked at some other documents that seemed to support that- I think the table is just confusing. But who knows!

@ColleenMcmilin @KCKlatt It doesnā€™t make sense because they are also hoping RFK jr clamps down on pharma influence. Soā€¦.

@ZKForTre Oh no, I donā€™t think this was done in good faith. The cut is basically straight from the Project 2025 handbook that said to cap IDC at the lowest amount a university accepts from a private org. This is sometimes 0. The only deviation is they went for a higher IDC as the cap.

@BevilConway Thatā€™s what I am trying to figure out. Is there a known perfect of the IRP budget that goes to ā€œoverheadā€? If so- what is it? And what is being cut to?

@davykevinp I agree that they probably donā€™t think of it that way, and likely why Iā€™m not seeing any concrete information. Surely someone knows if allocated $X total dollars per year that they need to set aside a certain percent for things that would normally fall into the ā€œF&Aā€ bucket?

Ending again with the disclaimer that I made some assumptions based on publicly available data which may not be accurate. Would love someone to provide sources that provide more clarity on the actual ā€œindirect costsā€ of research within the NIH intramural program. Thank you Fin

So I did some internet sleuthing. I could not uncover anything directly addressing this question. Not totally surprising since the intramural program differs from the extramural program. But, here Iā€™ll share what I found and what I *think* it means. 2/
