Then & Now. ACSM Boston Edition.
Then (2016): Ink was still dry on my diploma.
Dunkins (it’s not good, I know) upon arrival.
Great times with great friends, colleagues, & mentors.
Red Sox game fun. (Thanks to my Dad’s connections)

@GeetikaKalloo
I remember thinking wtf as a grad student hearing similar remarks, BUT, honestly I think it is helpful to know that the people you look up to and admire don’t actually find a way to “do it all”, and that they are open and honest about the support and privileges they have.
So honored and in awe that I received the
@CofHealth
Distinguished Mentor Award this year. Massive thanks and gratitude to my students &
@CMDepner
(who is a role model of a great mentor himself) for nominating me!
Myth: Faculty are really bad at replying to emails.
Fact: Faculty are completely overwhelmed by emails.
Turns out I'm reading >150 emails/d (over 5 day workweek, >110 over 7 day week). This is primarily 'focused' inbox as my spam boxes are pretty much always neglected!
OMG. In the hospital w/Jess after surgery and she got a message from
@DannyAmendola
. We are all freaking out right now. Thank you Danny!!

Reviewing NIH grants is hard, but grateful for the
@NIH
's Early Career Reviewer program allowing me to obtain experience with, and insight on, the mysterious Study Section progress.
Now, someone tell me how to best get through the Zoom overload of SS next week!
When it’s Tuesday and already been a week! Lol 😂
1 ND
1 Not fundable
1 Borderline score
We covered almost all the NIH bases this cycle…just missing a slam dunk.

10 years ago my first 1st author manuscript was officially in print in
@MSSEonline
.
Today we submitted my first graduate student's first 1st author manuscript.
🥳 Happy Day!
I suppose it was time to update my profile picture to a more recent one vs. one from 2015 while in grad school.... 🫣
Who is this person and when did she get crow's eyes? haha - oh well...such is life. Grateful for it all, and hope for many more wrinkles (much later on, that is)
Was asked about differences between being faculty vs. postdoc/student lately. There are many, but Reality of Faculty 101: Everything is your responsibility and your problem, despite having no control over some things and some errors not being at all your (or your team’s) fault.
My husband travels for work ~40+ weeks/year. He is now on a flight ban and will largely be working from home for the next 3 weeks. Our entire marriage has been this schedule, and our dating/engagement period was all long distance. I'm about to truly see what marriage is like...
Let no flask go unfilled, and let no life go timidly by.
Cheers, Jessica. Love you always little sibling.
(May have shocked the priest a little bit pulling out a flask during the eulogy, but had to do it in true Jess-style)

Our little pack is unfortunately down a member after having to say our goodbyes to Ranger today. House won’t be the same without his antics and husky “vocals”. 💔
Today I unexpectedly had to say goodbye to my best buddy. When I moved to SLC 10 years ago I was single and didn’t know a soul. Within a few months I had a new car, house, and a husky puppy. Never met a dog with more personality!
Disclaimer for future house guests: "All dietary patterns and preferences are welcome here, but the second you evangelize about how your diet is best, I reserve the right to feed you whatever it is that you are convinced must be avoided at all costs."
Welp, this one was (as
@mike_feigin
so eloquently put it), “NOT not discussed” 😆 😂 😭…but Commons did update with much better news on a prior grant as well tonight!
🎉 (breathes massive sigh of relief).
Adding a check mark to a research goal of mine. Today our work on how aerobic and resistance exercise acutely impact appetite was highlighted in
@GretchenReynold
’s NYT column!
ALL THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA WANTS TO TALK ABOUT IS COVID, COVID, COVID. ON NOVEMBER 4th, YOU WON’T BE HEARING SO MUCH ABOUT IT ANYMORE. WE ARE ROUNDING THE TURN!!!
Having now worked from home for 4 months, I have no idea how I ever found the time to put on make-up, do my hair, or commute to the office before beginning the work day.
Really hoping that attending
#ACSM22
next week renews my love for this career path because right now the constant stress (about projects, bringing in grants, my students and their progress and wellbeing, tenure, administrative hurdles, etc) and long days/nights are draining me.
Couldn't run

today. So got a foster pup instead. Looking for a Boston Marathon-themed name for this sweet, but energetic girl. 7 yrs going on 11 months.
2 yrs ago today I ran the Boston Marathon w/the

in support of folks battling cancer, like my late sister Jessica. Despite being in her final days, she was determined to get to the finish line and cheer me on.
I miss her & her zest for life everyday.

Out today as an Editor's Choice article in
@ObesitySociety
Journal, our paper presenting the appetite data from the "Energy Adaptations over Time Study (EATS)" trial. (

My first graduate student just set a date for her thesis defense. 🥳 I might be more excited than she is! Fortunately, she is staying for her PhD. Otherwise I would be crying about her leaving.
Did a double take on this license plate, immediately thinking of clostridium difficile (aka C. Diff). Personally, I would have chosen another way to display a love for Cardiff by the Sea, but maybe that's just the dietitian in me.
We're hiring!!
Clinical Research Coordinator to work with myself &
@CMDepner
on human clinical trials broadly focused on: sleep/circadian disruption, weight management, and metabolic disease.
Please RT.
Also, SLC is a GREAT place to live.

THIS 100%. Counsel and educate on possible outcomes. Say it could be available in the patient portal before you hear from me. If you would rather wait until I have reviewed and call you, then turn off auto alerts (and show them how to do this), and refrain from looking at portal.
@justinmaykel
I completely disagree. Nothing about you calling results in the patient not being alone. Furthermore, getting the results ahead of time allows the patient space to digest this and use the phone call to ask questions they may otherwise be too shocked to think of in the moment.

My Dad was very disappointed that I was "only and Assistant Professor after all of this time". I had to explain Assistant Prof does not mean "Professor's Assistant". Lol
For a long time we have seen that exercise is 🔑to maintaining weight loss. New paper (apparently not published until tomorrow?? lol) shows superior weight loss & maintenance over 1 year w/combined liraglutide & exercise.
Turns out that today is the day for the annual "Who understands what 'Reply All' means" massive inbox overload. A helpful diagram one individual decided to send (via "Reply All") to help the group out. 😆
1. This is not the
#OW2019
hotel gym. (Not the free one. Maybe the $30/d gym)
2. When I went at night, like shown here, only had a few folks- not a shock.
3. In the morning, WAY above max capacity.
4. Tons of attendees running the strip
A lot of ppl practicing what they preach!
This is the

hotel gym.
This isn’t a joke. These are your thoughts leaders, telling you to eat more fruits and whole grains, eat less and move more...
Bad advice and bad examples.
Sorry but we can do better
There is NO current evidence that treating endocrine-associated conditions of Low Energy Availability w/pharmacotherapy is medically appropriate. Need to focus on basics - nutrition 👏👍 - to restore energy availability! thanks

Very excited and honored to be joining the
@ESSRonline
Editorial Board in 2023. Very much a little fish in a big pond amongst these established and well-respected investigators.
Working on a manuscript about lifestyle strategies to promote long-term weight maintenance...while eating Girl Scout cookies.
SLC's best dietitian, at your service!
Just purchased my Halloween candy for Thursday. Normally I buy chocolate/PB candies, but this year I went for low fat, high sugar options. Rationale: leftovers can come with me for long run fuel. Trust me, I'm a dietitian. 👍
After a crazy and stressful last few months, some good news coming today (on her birthday) that my mother does not need to undergo cardiac surgery! Hallelujah! I don't normally post personal stuff here, but was too excited to not share widely! 🙌🙌🙌
Why oh why oh why did I honestly tell my Lyft driver why I am in Phoenix?!?! Now listening to his diet and supplement regimen. Are we there yet?!?!
#SCANSymposium
Grad student was having issues with the BodPod computer (which we need scheduled to warm up for a visit in the morning). Asked me for help. I told her to turn it off and back on. It now works. PI of the month award right here!
New manuscript from my team.
Effects of an Acute Bout of Aerobic or Resistance Exercise on Non-Exercise Physical Activity published in
@ACSMNews
’ new journal, Exercise, Sport, and Movement
I don't know why trainees and faculty say that PIs are useless in the lab. For instance, I *successfully* changed the time on the clock in the lab all by myself this morning.
There is a whole lot of rejection in academia, but today, was kicked off with a manuscript acceptance!! This paper has been my 'problem child'. Originally submitted for publication in August of 2017. The revise than reject decision cycle was particularly cruel on this one
Tenure-Track: The time period in your career where having laser focus on your work is expected and encouraged.
Also, the time period in your life when major things happen, that decrease your ability to focus on work.
Thank goodness for Zoom. Able to walk the pups in our winter wonderland and still make it to an 8a meeting with ease and no stress of scraping off the car (or putting on real pants 😆)
Be Where Your Feet Are
Sometimes that is on a trail.
Other times it is on Zoom for 7 hours.
Reminding myself to stay present and focused on what is in front of me. Not daydreaming while working, nor stressed about work while out exploring.
December 1st.
Mission: finish the year strong after 7-10 hard, unproductive months.
Today - Manuscript that has been sitting waiting for me to make final edits was finally submitted.🥳
What is everyone else planning to focus on for the final month of 2020?
The Halliday Lab’s first graduate: MS student, Selene Tobin.
I am so proud of her. Over the past two years she has accomplished so much and truly been a leader on my team and in

as a whole.
Deeply disappointed at the attacks (and subsequent subtweets) on

Yesterday,
@mackinprof
gave us a master class in how to deliver a tutorial lecture at

A summary of his Priscilla Clarkson Memorial Lecture. However, this session was recorded and is well worth the watch (or re watch if you were there live).
Senior mentors: "Don't use so many acronyms in your grants, reviewers don't like them"
Institutional leaders: "The UUH CCTS CTS RRSC provides assistance to investigators...."

This one time (today) I ran a 10K…in jeans…on a boat…in the rough waters of Norway.
Some may find this very odd. Those who know me well understand this is very on brand.
Good morning

Mine is morning walks with

For 2021 I decided it would be fun to do a

challenge. Each week I plan to post a manuscript which had an impact on my career to date, with a brief commentary on its importance to me. Some will be tied to my current research, some will not.
Join in?
Congratulations

Now the waiting game for intisutional processes before it’s official!
Goal for 2023…actually take a vacation. As in go somewhere and not work everyday. Or is this just a pipe dream for a PI? (Or at least for a PI like me with an overwhelming sense of anxiety and guilt combined with poor boundaries 😆)
Word really needs a button to automatically remove all double spaces after periods. No offense to people who do this...but why do you do this?!?! If you insist on this for your 1st/senior author papers, fine, but as a co-author, just don't!
