#ProfGMarkets @profgalloway and @edels0n continue to riff on the thesis that consumers and general public, not the AI shareholders may extract the value from AI. @AswathDamodaran thinks there will be 3 segments of the AI industry: -Tiffany’s: Premium AI market powered by exclusive data and super computers (ie - Palantir). -Walmart: Commoditized market. Companies that provide commoditized services but wrap it in their personalized brand making you feel like you’re getting something more. These companies compete on low cost, benefits consumers. -Platforms: “Freebie” AI uses that keep you on Google, Meta, LinkedIn longer, thus increasing platform engagement #DeepSeek #AI

@BG2Pod was perhaps the first tech podcast to report on DeepSeek (Jan 23 release). In the AI arms race the US government had been looking for ways to "block" China with export controls and it appears to have backfired. @altcap @bgurley reference a Steve "Jobs-ism" "constraints can drive innovation" to explain China's response to these controls. @altcap says, "Well intended legislation and efforts can backfire and result in the exact opposite. Everyone wants to be tough on China, but being tough on China may not lead to them being slowed down as is evidence by DeepSeek."

@edels0n has questioned why we should believe DeepSeek's $6M expense. "The CCP lies about GDP growth, inflation...why wouldn't they lie about this too?" Others agree. Martin Vechev, Director of INSAIT, contends that DeepSeek's claim of developing its R1 large language model for under $6M is misleading, as it likely excludes comprehensive research and development expenses, which he estimates to be between $100M and $500M annually. #ai #deepseek #technews #technology

@edels0n has said there are two AI consortiums forming: 1)OpenAI: OpenAI, MSFT, Oracle, NVIDIA 2)Anthropic: Anthropic, Google, AMZN, Salesforce Could this week's DeepSeek news be disrupting this otherwise impressive duopoly?
