Don’t let “musicians” tell you sampling isn’t a musical skill. Players have been borrowing phrases from other people songs since long before samplers existed.
Hip Hop is electronic music. Make sure that doesn’t get left out of the conversation. As a matter of fact, most of these sub-genres of electronic music wouldn’t exist without Hip Hop.
So when you see me gliding between genres, just know the root is the same. 🤝🏾😤
If you didn’t know, up until Marley Marl, Hip Hop drums were only made up of Breaks. Marley was the first to chop a break into one shots and program his own patterns. That one move did more for MUSIC OVERALL than a lot of bands/artists combined.
Friendly reminder: the name “Jungle” came from reclaiming a term coined by racist upper class white folks used to describe the music made by working class black and brown people.
So drum n bass and all offshoots of jungle is inherently Black too. Don’t get it Twisted.
Here’s two tips that I wish I knew earlier
1) your hi hats/cymbals/shakers & tambourines are the only things that sit in that frequency range, they don’t need to be loud.
2) Every sound has a sweet spot, trimming the excess frequencies gives you the headroom to increase volume
I will not remake a beat for you. I will not make you a type beat. I work a job, that means 8 hours a day I do what someone else says.
My music is ME, you wanna work, you’re getting my sound. No paint by numbers shit
Artist/ Musician shouldn’t be a celebrity career. There are so many of us who just want to be able to do the thing we love the most and have no interest in being famous.
We have to be able to create a space for the arts as a sustainable long term career.
L*fi albums that get pressed to vinyl end up having fake vinyl sounds overtop the noise from the actual record 😂
I didn’t think about it till listening to records rn
Stop trying to return to “normal”. The world doesn’t pause like this and go back to “normal”.
Take this time to really understand what matters to you. Don’t rush to create things, just be present.
Reconnect with yourself because work really separates us from who we are
DON’T FORGET THAT I’M A BLACK ARTIST. MY VIEWS ARE PRO BLACK. I have to remind people that I’m here to make music but I was black before I picked up a drum stick.
I will continue to speak on blackness and the historically underserved until reparations are met.
I’m not saying anything
@kush_jones_
hasn’t already said, but this variety article really demonstrates the erasure that a lot of Black & Brown folks have been facing in dance music. No shade to any of the involved artists, but to act as though the genre was dead here is obtuse.
You’re not supposed to “get it right” in your 20s. You just spent 18 years doing what other people told you to do. It’s totally okay to “fail” because up till this point “failure” was defined to you by someone else.
Y’all want artists to rush and drop songs every month for you to half listen to on streaming services for fractions of a penny. That’s not sustainable bro.
Jazz being the “intellectual” music while hip hop is the “talentless” music is classist and divisive. The connecting thread is Black innovation and expression. That’s why a lot of people that make “Jazz” don’t identify with the genre.
On Dilla day I want you all to remember that it doesn’t take fancy EQs and plugins to make timeless music. It takes knowing what you want to say and how you’re going to say.
?uestlove said Dilla already knew the sample chop and the beat before he turned his MPC on
That energy>>

It’s fucking crazy how many Black Women have spent the entire day trying to explain what they’re feeling and how many Men just brushed it aside and called it “divisive”.
Y’all matching the energy of the system we’re supposed to be dismantling. It doesn’t take much to learn.
Remember: Gentrification causes displacement (which can fuel desperation) and also elevates police presence in otherwise black/brown/ working class neighborhoods.
Maybe stop moving to Brooklyn for “proximity, art and culture”? Especially if you’re scared all the time.
Why create more record labels when we can create tools to boost each other and a network of graphic designers, marketing specialists, PR people, mix/mastering engineers and pay each other for our work? Same thing but with more freedom.
Man FUCK the sub genres. It’s all hip hop. It was hip hop when the OGs did it, it’s hip hop now. Hip hop is a culture first and a genre second.
Lofi is a description lol. Can we get back to the beats?
Jazz is Black music. Just like blues is Black music. Just like funk is Black music. And hip hop is beautiful because we connect with our predecessors through sampling.
Make hardware more accessible for young black and brown kids. As a Black hardware/synth junkie, I love talking about gear with other Black Folx.
Kids should be able to be inspired by gear so they can go an innovate. That was what my focus was with KORG and it remains the same.
If you’re mixing/mastering stuff in your home studio/bedroom: be gentle with yourself.
A lot of the records you like /use as references were done in professional, treated studios. Get it sounding good and don’t drive yourself crazy.
Music theory doesn’t take the life out of your beats. That’s the big misconception. Music theory doesn’t give you “rules” to play by. It just speeds up the process of guessing what works.
Got my first magazine feature out in Japan 😤❤️
I couldn’t have imagined doing anything like this when I was stumbling home from parties making beats on my iPhone. ✨
We need to start teaching people what it means to build a sustainable music career. Not ever doctor is world famous, but they can pay their bills. By that logic not every musician needs to be Dr. Dre, just be able to pay their bills off their craft.
I’ve been making “sample free” beats all wrong. It’s much more fun to come up with a whole loop and just chop it on another day. Suddenly the beat is already done 🤷🏾♂️
If your conversation about liberating ourselves from oppressive systems doesn’t include unlearning misogyny and patriarchal norms then it’s not inclusive. That doesn’t make you a “Bad” person. There’s just work to be done
Timeless music only happens when the artists aren’t concerned with anything other than their own vision. When you’re focused on a trend (a literal sign of the times) your music lasts as long as that trend is on top.
As music and music production (art as a whole really) becomes further commodified, you begin to see less and less artists leave room for the “magic” that happens in creativity, in exchange for carrying out a successful formula. Kind of a bummer.
Looking at FlyLo and Knx scoring TV shows, kaytranada landing a Grammy and the countless other accomplishments of “bedroom producers”, is inspiring.
Idk if they all thought making beats would take them here, but it proves that there is so much to do with this work.
Breonna Taylor’s name is no longer trending and the police that murdered her are still free. If you see this please reply/quote/tweet on your own.
ARREST BRETT HANKISON, JONATHAN MATTINGLY & MYLES COSGROVE FOR THE MURDER OF

Guys the lab is done 🥺🎹
It took 4 hours to wire everything but I’ve literally dreamt of a set up like this.
I can’t wait to start making boops and beeps.
Also happy birthday to Nujabes, who served as the gateway into beat music for a lot of folks through his work on samurai champloo. I wouldn’t have heard “the shining” (the first dilla project I heard) without putting a Nujabes radio on pandora (I’m dating myself here 😂)
Gentrification and the bastardized version of Hip Hop beats. Also a lot of black and brown creators being left out of the conversation rubbed a lot of us the wrong way.
Why is "lo-fi" such a bad word now?
Cuz jazzy chill beats always gon' win w/ me. to listen to & rap over.
Maybe cuz I don't make beats, I don't get why ppl get upset/distance themselves from that style of beatmaking.
I'm also OLD. Y'all remember "Mushroom Jazz" cd's?
This multiband thing was like the final part of the puzzle for my mixes. I’ve been getting solid balancing across the board but my kick drum always eats the whole mix. This cured that.
Mixing hack: When you get a rough volume mix/arrangement of your track that you’re satisfied with, export it.
That early version serves as a reference point so as the finalization process continues, you don’t lose sight of what you LOVED about the track.
I just got word that my album is pulled from the queue 🙏🏾
THAT SAID while I appreciate people reaching out with labels and collectives to help distribute my music, I am hesitant to give this particular project to anyone.
AMANI will be self released ❤️✨🌞
This energy is the problem I have with people who learn to play instruments. Having access to instruments and instructors is a PRIVILEGE. Sampling allowed music to be something that people without access could do. I’ll still do my lessons tho just cuz I love the piano 🤗
@Nothing_Neue
Dude. No. Nothing will ever beat live instrumentation and carving out structures from instruments. Dare I say your sentiments are related to the demise of music as we know it. Keep up your piano lessons. Thanks
Aye: swing is not just turning off quantize and hitting pads. It’s an advanced understanding of rhythm.
Before you start trying to swing your drums, get comfortable playing on time with the beat. It’ll help you find the pockets/resolutions.
Isaiah Rashad and Vince Staples albums got the most replay for me. Why is that? They were short, and to the point. It left me wanting to run the whole joint back when it was done.
Goal oriented people love to play the role of “martyr”.
You’re going after you want, there’s nothing altruistic about you missing your nephews birthday.
