Im not gonna spoil it but the mist brings death. Toxic or some other way, you'll have to watch the movie for and yes the tank is friendly. The reason why the scene is so wrenching is because they all suicide expecting to die either way but they all couldve lived

I see alot of people asking what this, if im not mistaken i believe it's a fire escape. It's a very long tube that lets the escpaees 'fall' down the tube to safety (the ground). Faster than taking stairs or elevators too. Not sure the name but that is the main purpose of them.
