I’m big on FIT over FREE. Recruits find a good environment that will help you GROW on the court but also in the CLASSROOM. Somewhere that can help you find a good INTERNSHIP with the resources to NETWORK. The ball stops bouncing at some point. Enjoy your atmosphere. Go beyond.

I’m really big on fit over free. If you can find a great fit that’s free jump on that opportunity. I’ve seen and coached too many players unhappy because they went somewhere on a full, just for it to be a bad fit. Whether it be basketball, culture, etc. What’s important to you?

Coaches you CHOOSE to sit on that bench. Players you CHOOSE to put on that jersey. So understand it’s a CHOICE. While you’re making that CHOICE you give EVERYTHING to that program. Anything less is just wrong.

Players, always respond! No matter the level. I don’t care what advice your “coach, handler, parents, friends” say. If a coach hits you up, respond. Coaches try to respond more too. Even a “thanks for the message, we’re not interested at the moment” is enough.

If a college coach is interested in your player. It’s okay to mediate, to be involved. But for the love of God let the student athlete, and the family speak with the college coach. Don’t try to dictate and control everything. Part of the process is building the relationship.

Recruits go on visits. Don’t commit before you visit a school. If you have a slight interest and the school is willing to get you up, then take it. See the atmosphere, resources, players, coaches. Make an informed decision. Don’t leap at level. Leap at what feels right.

I used to be “had to be free” when I was coaching JuCo. If it’s free, good ball, a good environment it’s a no brainer but I’ve coached a lot of kids who jumped at free or D1 only to end up disappointed because the culture or “fit” wasn’t there. Just saying it’s more than money

Never told a lie. Finally got the chance to sit down and get to know some of the coaches in the league this weekend. A lot of genuine good people and coaches.
As a JC coach, these are vital:
1) Do all you can to make your players better people.
2) Create the best path to graduate.
3) Develop them into better players
4) Do everything possible to help them move on and get 4-year placement.
5) And everything else in between!
