Friends, psych colleagues: I have finally managed to publish my first academic paper... do have a read if it's your thing.
'I still haven't found what I'm looking for: Early relational–developmental deficits and the search for repair through the erotic'
@caitlinmoran
Wanting to acknowledge that we've learned a lot in recent times (MeToo etc) and wanting to understand more and change attitudes more but being afeared of being ripped to shit for previous crappiness.
Bazball is fascinating in that it makes you question what sport is actually all about. Are we comfortable with losers walking off smiling? Does joy outweigh success? If success isn't everything, why are we competing?
Lovely email that,
@Aggerscricket
. Beautifully done. My own Dad passed away on 1 June and his digital radio was one of the vital items that always had to be within reach at the hospice (glasses, water, radio). Cricket was always our glue and
@bbctms
at the heart of it.
This is very interesting. This is what we need when the likes of Swann, Vaughan, Tuffers etc are on comms - it'd be so much more fascinating than listening to attempts at humour, discussions about dinner, golf etc.
@tommo_tv
@VinehallSchool
Cringe. Not only awfully conceived but hideously written. Surely no copywriter involved here. Just someone who went to public school and now teaches at one.
The British appetite for quietly gleeful schadenfreude in full view on the train as a couple of women who yakked loudly non-stop all journey, including about the rudeness of fellow passengers and the ugliness of other people's babies, miss their stop.
@DrJessTaylor
It's horrible. I can't stop looking at those poor kids and wondering what they're thinking and what they're learning about their own importance.
@JamesAHogg2
Magnificent. You can tell it's Victoria Wood from the wonderful wordplay and the rhythm of the speech. It's like she took Alan Bennett and turned it up to 11.
@caitlinmoran
Reading this thread has been an interesting exercise. I entered it cynically and exited it feeling the warmth of these comments and somewhat cheered. I think there's an element of 'Ah, so people do notice.'
@TVpsychologist
Whether you're right or wrong (prob the latter - you're not their psych, you're just looking on through the media prism), you chose to publish an article read by millions and which will be to the detriment of the people involved. It's awful and brings psych into disrepute.
@LizJonesGoddess
@caitlinmoran
@LucyMangan
Is this an elaborate way to gather material for a column? "I was the victim of a Twitter pile-on and all I did was make a simple statement straight out of my arse." Then lefties, Brexit, Rule Britannia, migrant invasion, is Diana really alive etc.
@Jessicae13Eaton
Yes. And this must start at home and in the classroom. Laugh at a child's question and it shames them into not asking again. Every child's every question should be take seriously. This is a biggie for me. Don't know why we think we can laugh at kids for not knowing.
@PhilMitchell83
@TonyGal01205164
@x_TaraS_x
@BACP
Phil, I don't want you to stand up for me, a man, in this way. You can't improve things for a whole gender by making life worse for one child. She needs looking after. Her views won't have been magicked up out of nowhere.
@DanRebellato
Beautiful. I had the same with my 13 y.o. daughter the other evening. Doesn't happen much these days so I lay there wondering how to absorb as much of the feeling as possible.
You think I give a shit about "their" anger?!
My anger is as fucking deep as the universe is wide.
My wrath will be as harsh as the surface of the sun.
You are stealing my childrens future.
You can fuck the fuck off and so can they.
Well. After many barren years, I managed 97 today and am relieved to know I still have it in me. Much obliged to my extraordinarily supportive team mates at
@WaltonOnTrentCC
. I will spend the next few days reliving each shot and planning my assault on 2021.
@AatifNawaz
She's miles out. If this gets batters to stay in their crease, great. Then we won't have to talk about it any more. This is an uncomfortable reset period because yes, this does look ugly - but soon batters will stay put, bowlers will stop searching for it and we'll all carry on.
Last night, I attended the
@WisdenAlmanack
dinner as writing competition winner - a wonderful experience. With the permission of
@the_topspin
, I have published the winning piece on my blog. (If you've got the yellow book, it's on p85!)
I have arrived home after my first long spell of bowling (10 overs straight off) after a 10-month layoff, at the age of 47. The involuntary noises coming from me with every movement are just another level.
@BBCWomansHour
@DrJessTaylor
@RVT9
That was lively... Very odd interviewing at times - abundantly clear that
@Emmabarnett
disagrees. But absolute clarity from Dr Taylor and plenty of food for thought for everyone.
From this month's excellent
@WisdenCricket
, a look at Derbyshire ahead of the season. Includes some timely views on the 18-county debate - "I get very frustrated when the club is seen as disposable...in fact, as club captain it's hurtful.' Billy Godleman. 1/2
This longish read is really excellent on the theory behind the mystery that is 'how does therapy work?' It applies more to psychodynamic/relational-developmental approaches but it's really very clear on explaining some of the theory.
@TheCricketerMag
He bowled some beauties for sure but I lost count of the number of genuine half-volleys Cook patted back in that footage. Can't see Rohit and friends being so kind...
Lots of potential though, so let's hope I'm as wrong with this as I have been with everything in the Stokes era.
@DrJessTaylor
"Anyway, isn’t it the biggest compliment to anyone to be wanted instead of needed?" Yes. And how at odds with our current romantic love tropes. 'You complete me' culture is damaging to pretty much everyone - except greetings card makers and wedding venues.
@GeorgeDobell1
😄😄 We used to have a similar neighbour. It was only after a few weeks of being in equal parts annoyed and impressed by his stamina that we realised he was single but with an extensive DVD collection.
Can't remember the last time I was genuinely blown away by a novel. Even if 'astonishing', 'spectacular' etc on the blurb. Not to say they haven't been enjoyable - but never quite as good as the hype. I'd love to know what novels have genuinely astonished/delighted people?
@KP24
Oh, come on. 1. County cricket has been having a belting season. 2. Stokes is in a different class. Are you sure you didn’t bang your head when you fainted at the sight of the left arm spinner coming on?
@RevRichardColes
Good. But it does mean yr Twitter will go ballistic & we'll have to share you. We'll talk of how we followed you before you hit the big time
@henrymoeranBBC
It's known as an Infinihit. The umpire makes this signal above his head and the players resign themselves to spending the rest of their lives on the field of play. The Infinihit is sponsored by Sisyphus Bouldering Services.
Ah, cricket. I think I may have just taken my first hat-trick today (my memory's too bad and the I've been playing too long to be sure) and I bowled, by and large, like a buffoon. But I got it, and we won.
Finally got round to reading this with the time and attention it deserves. An excellent piece - and reassuring to therapists when sometimes you feel you're not 'doing' enough - actually you are 'being ' enough.
@marit_cmarit
@DrJessTaylor
You give them too much credit. It's pure, vile abuse. Hard to believe until you read it. There is no engagement on any issues in the (not yet released) book.
@Jessicae13Eaton
Horrendous. Unthinkable until you see it. Also so sad that the tiny spark of joy and playfulness she was trying to hold on to has been eradicated in a moment and probably for good. Very upsetting.
@DrJessTaylor
Sometimes we confuse strong with invincible, so it's a shock when we're reminded that the strong ones are still human, still have vulnerabilities and still get hurt. We should remember this in all our dealings with everyone, no matter how impervious they may sometimes seem.
Looking forward to Stuart calling back any batsman who gets caught off a filthy inadvertent long-hop; or is accidentally run out from a straight drive; or caught by keeper off short leg's back; or stumped off a clueless keeper's pads; or is LBW when a crap ball pitches and shoots
So the Mankad is no longer unfair & is now a legitimate dismissal.
Hasn’t it always been a legitimate dismissal & whether it is unfair is subjective?
I think it is unfair & wouldn’t consider it, as IMO, dismissing a batter is about skill & the Mankad requires zero skill.
This is excellent. Can anyone think of another sport having a world cup that would benefit from this kind of massive exposure to inspire the next generation of players and spectators?
England v Scotland record viewing ..
“peak of 6.1m watching on tv and 37.8% share of available audience making it the UK’s most watched women’s football game of all time.”
@janemerrick23
Or 'The mothership' as my wife calls it... this would also be her dream vaccination location. Probably need about four hours in there for recovery... (Her work below)

Another element that makes this hard for men - IMHO - is that although this allyship requires us to speak up at times, it also requires us to shut up a lot of times. This is hard when we are used to having our voices heard and our ego stroked. We want our absence to be noticed.
I was very pleased to be asked to write about my home county for
@WisdenCricket
magazine. It seems particularly relevant not just with the county season around the corner but also with the old 18-county debate firing up again - something I address in the piece.
@jonathanliew
Very pleased to read this. Whether three minutes or three years later, getting together to talk is (almost) always the thing to do. Well played you two.
@NHoultCricket
FFS. No, cheers
@englandcricket
, I really feel like my support of the England men's team, getting up and staying up at all hours for the Ashes etc, has been amply rewarded by your dropping of England's best two bowlers.
@JacobLunn11
Your tweets remind me of that joyous period, aged 14-21 or thereabouts, when I managed to find a game to play nearly every day of the week! Enjoy all these games.
@stigmainthebin
I would say, though, that there really should be things on a therapist's website that some people like and others really don't. This means the therapist is being authentic and the client has a better chance of finding a good match.
I don’t think I’ve ever done a thread before but…THREAD… As a school governor and as a parent, I would recommend all parents read the government guidelines - - about the return to school.1/
@Jaimi_Shrive
@DrJessTaylor
Yep. This 'world of work' shtick is so antiquated and snobby. Some kids should turn up in overalls and hi-vis and say they're preparing for the world of work.
@AdamRutherford
@AnnieRothNews
Is there a finer way to start a Thursday morning than setting A Rutherford off on one of his favourite specialist subjects.
NB Please do Mastermind on this.
@GeorgeDobell1
Oh. That's a shame for Robinson and distinctly unadventurous from England. Presume the deck must have some grass on it. I look forward to Overton's 27-6-51-1.
Poor old Curtis Campher -he wasn't up for that interview. The way his face changed at the end of it and a 'I got through that by the skin of my teeth' exhalation. Whatever's happened, it makes his knock all the more remarkable.
Picking up 13 y.o. daughter from rehearsals:
Her: I got to try on my nun costume today.
Me: Oh, that's a good habit to get into!
Her:
Me:
Her: 🙄
Me: 😬
Her: Please don't ever make that joke again.
Me: *Drives her to her next activity.
