Author of The Forever War: America’s Unending Conflict with Itself and When America Stopped Being Great. Former BBC correspondent in Washington and New York.
If you are wondering why a racist felon who tried to mount an insurrection on January 6th still stands a good chance of returning to the White House, I wrote a book offering a 250-year explanation…..
Future generations might find it hard to believe that this photo was taken at the White House in the midst of a pandemic that had by that stage killed more than 200,000 Americans.
There have been more than 25 tweets today from Donald Trump. Not one of them has mentioned his wife, Melania, or members of his administration suffering from Covid. Nor has his feed shown compassion for his compatriots who’ve also got Covid or the relatives of the 210000 US dead.
I have loved my 25 years with the BBC. To work alongside so many colleagues I admire and adore has been one of the great gifts of my life. But I’ll be leaving later in the year - returning to Australia, happy, contented and genuinely excited about what’s next.
When the next pandemic occurs (and make no mistake, it will) and the federal government is unable to respond in a coordinated and effective fashion to protect the lives of US citizens and others, this decision by John Bolton and Donald Trump will be why.
If you are waking up in the UK, the Trump lead has been cut in Pennsylvania to 22,576 (with more than 170,000 votes still to count, more than 50,000 of them in Dem Philadelphia).
Trump lead cut to 1709 in Georgia.
Biden leads Nevada by 11,438
Biden leads Arizona by 47,052.
This gotcha questioning is out of control - it has had a disfiguring effect on the campaign. It has made a small bore campaign even smaller. Lot to think about as an industry when this campaign is over…..
A key takeaway. Trump polled at least 3 million more votes in 2020 than 2016. His vote share has increased. Time to bury the idea his 2016 victory was a historical accident. A large swathe of the USA has read the fine print & clicked on the terms and conditions of his presidency.
Today we’re remembering Simon Cumbers, the BBC cameraman murdered in 2004 while on assignment in Saudi Arabia. He was the loveliest and most gentle of men, universally liked and admired. He embodied all that’s good in our industry.

So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!
An extraordinary moment in US broadcasting history - Fox News cuts away from the White House press secretary citing the lack of evidence for her claims of Democratic cheating.....
An invasion? I was in the border town yesterday that Donald Trump visited. The local police chief told us the crime rate was the lowest in 34 years, and the existing barriers worked well. He said the biggest problem was the 'perception' of disorder rather than the real thing.
Humanitarian Crisis at our Southern Border. I just got back and it is a far worse situation than almost anyone would understand, an invasion! I have been there numerous times - The Democrats, Cryin’ Chuck and Nancy don’t know how bad and dangerous it is for our ENTIRE COUNTRY....
Telling that some of finest Aussie tributes have come from Republicans - Paul Keating and
@TurnbullMalcolm
. Suspect they represent the prevailing view: massive respect and affection for the Queen combined with skepticism about the relevance of monarchy to modern Australia.

Kabul is now the only major city in Afghanistan not under Taliban control. The work of 20 years - all the lives lost and the treasure spent - unravels in less than 2 months. This will be in the opening paragraph of Joe Biden’s foreign policy legacy.
In awe of this guy, my mate Rob Laurie, who in perilous seas late this afternoon took to ocean to save a swimmer caught in a vicious rip who would certainly have drowned. One of the bravest acts of heroism I’ve witnessed. An Aussie legend.
State of play.
Georgia - Biden leads 7248
Nevada - Biden leads 22,657
Arizona - Biden leads 29,861
Pennsylvania - Biden leads 28,833
Big batch of results expected to be released in Pennsylvania at 0900 which are expected to extend Biden’s lead.
Penn alone gets Biden past 270
Australian headlines understandably dominated by Macron openly calling Morrison a liar, but in the coming decades this could receive more historical attention….

55 years of hurt seems incidental this morning. It’s the never-ending scourge of racism that’s heartbreaking. A thought that raises the spirits is that Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka will be representing England, on and off the field, for years to come.
Today we’re remembering Simon Cumbers, the BBC cameraman murdered by Islamists in 2004 while on assignment in Saudi Arabia. He was a lovely, gentle man and personified all that’s good in our industry. This year he would have celebrated his 50th birthday.

Historical takeaway: a president who incited an insurrectionary mob to attack the US Capitol was acquitted in an impeachment trial six weeks later partly because Republican Senators were afraid of his personal base.
If every single Biden appearance from now on is going to come under the microscope, we need to do the same with Trump. All the crazy stuff needs to get front page coverage - which doesn’t happen at present. All the lapses showing cognitive decline. All the threats to democracy.
When I came to the United States as a wide-eyed teenager in the mid-1980s, one of the things that seduced me about America was its preoccupation with the future. Almost four decades on, I'm struck by how it remains captive to its past. My farewell piece.
In a phone call with CNN minutes after Biden announced his exit from the 2024 race, former President Trump responded, “He is the worst president in the history of our country. He goes down as the single worst president by far in the history of our country.” While it's unclear who
We said we would leave America when our kids realised why they rehearsed hiding in their classrooms. We now live in Australia, the model for how to introduce gun laws. I know America, a country I love dearly, will not follow that path, and I fear this will be another Sandy Hook.
SPECIAL REPORT: Texas Governor Greg Abbott says at least 14 kids and one teacher are dead after an “active shooter” was reported at an elementary school in Ulvade, Texas.
Wasn’t it because of Russia’s invasion of Crimea, it’s interference in Ukraine, it’s part in shooting down a commercial airliner killing 298 people, its support and assistance to Assad’s murderous regime, the murder of Russians on British soil and its attack on US democracy?

Every state has now been called - a clear-cut Electoral College win for President-elect Joe Biden. 306-232. Biden got he same number of Electoral College votes as Donald Trump in 2016.

One of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking tributes to the Queen comes from a Republican dubbed by the UK tabloids the “Lizard of Oz”, Paul Keating.
Joe Biden has taken the lead in Pennsylvania - the potentially decisive moment of this election. 5,587 ahead.
Biden leads in Georgia
Biden leads in Nevada
Biden leads in Arizona.
Pennsylvania alone wins him the presidency.
For more than a decade, Twitter has been Donald Trump’s unfettered megaphone, from birtherism onwards. This dramatically alters the online rules of engagement. Milestone moment in the era of the Internet presidency.
Imagine you’re recruiting the most junior position in your company or organization, and doing due diligence on their social media posts. I realize this isn’t the bar, but would you hire this man?
I’ve long thought Australians have some of the most finely tuned BS detectors on the planet, so I’ve been a little surprised that so much misinformation has taken hold. And if ever there was a slogan encapsulating the dumbing down of democracy, it’s “If you don’t know, vote no.”
It’s a small ask for a giant step forward in reconciliation, and a generous invitation from First Nations people for us to listen, learn and come together. These kind of historic opportunities rarely present themselves again.
A US president arrived calling for Putin to be readmitted to the G7, left attacking America’s closest allies and is now heading off to legitimize one of America’s arch enemies. And all this in the week that marked the anniversary of the D-day landings.

If the U.K. violates that international treaty and Brexit undermines the Good Friday accord, there will be absolutely no chance of a U.S.-U.K. trade agreement passing the Congress. The Good Friday Agreement is treasured by the American people.

One of the great broadcasters. One of the big personalities. One of the most consummate pros. One of the funniest people in the industry, whose bulls-eye wit was often directed at our industry. You’ll be missed

The happiest of updates. With immense joy and an indescribable sense of relief, we have welcomed our new little girl into the world. My wife, who was extraordinary, and our American daughter, who is just gorgeous, are doing well after a home birth. Our midwife was immense.
I so vividly remember the moment I heard that Mark Colvin had died, five years ago today. Australia isn't the same without him, and Twitter is a lesser place without
@Colvinius
Here's a tribute I wrote to him when he died.
A shot that might mystify generations to come - a presidential political rally in 2020, the year more than 210,000 Americans have already died from the coronavirus and in a hotspot state, Florida, which has recorded 17,600 cases in the past week.

Obama’s withdrawal from Iraq fueled the rise of ISIS. Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan has been a gift to the Taliban. Any US official with even a cursory understanding of Afghanistan would have known that, and also the consequences for women and girls in the country.
Not a fan of using impeachment as a political weapon, but Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanagh clearly lied under oath during their confirmation hearings. The normalisation of brazen political lying has become, like the hyper-conservative court, a legacy of the Trump years.
#RoeVWade
The danger with journalists repeatedly saying that Boris Johnson defies the normal laws of political gravity is that it helps him achieve weightlessness, and normalises the chronically abnormal. Similar, if not identical, dynamic with Trump.
For the first time since late March, New York recorded fewer than 100 Covid deaths - 84 lives were lost. That compares to 590 deaths in NYC on the deadliest day of the outbreak in early April.

Mask or no mask? It’s starting to look like a new form a loyalty test in the Trump White House. Scientists very clear where they stand. Political appointees go with Trump.
This really is required viewing - and the attack on democracy continued that night, after the Capitol was cleared of insurrectionists, when more than half the GOP House Caucus voted to overturn the results of the presidential election
Take 7 minutes to watch House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and others respond to the Capitol insurrection in previously unseen footage.
VP: I was a courtroom prosecutor. In those roles I took on perpetrators of all kinds. Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump's type.
