Today Labour have been forced to make a panicked attempt to reassure the markets on the economic mess of their own making. But Rachel Reeves is missing in action - instead wheeling out her deputy to defend her loss of control of the public finances.

They’ve lied to the farmers, the elderly, small business owners, workers, bill-payers & savers. It’s hardly a surprise that they lied to children & teachers as well. Revenue from Labour’s introduction of the only Education Tax in Europe was previously promised for: - 6,500 new teachers (predicted to cost £4.9 billion p.a. by NFER, & repeated as a lie through civil service channels just last month) - £2,490 retention bonuses to tutors (£56 million) - ‘Young Futures Hubs’ (£92 million) - Mental health support across England in schools (£576 million) - Extra training for teachers (part of £557 million already earmarked for recruiting & training) - More extra-curricular clubs (presumably just an off-the-cuff sound bite rather than something that can be costed) - ‘Professional careers advice & work experience’ for all young people (no figure given) - Extra catch-up courses (no figure given) The educational organisation, EDSK, predicts the tax could raise as little as £19 million. The ASI & others predict a net cost to the Treasury from this policy. It therefore came as no surprise to hear the govt won’t be monitoring net revenue after the first few months (therefore not even tracking the impact in the first full academic year) & that zero extra money will be going into the state system. Only the most foolish would now believe a word Labour says. It is just lie after lie after lie. 🥀🤥 #EducationNotTaxation 📚
