My family has been taken to Gaza.
We don't know their medical condition, we know that if my uncle isn't released soon he could die, he has a degenerative disease and needs treatment.
They are European citizens. I need anyone with any contacts to get in touch with me ASAP.
These are 13 people from my family. There are young children, including these two children. I can't even imagine and I try not to - please, any contact who might know someone who can help - government, media, red cross etc
An update on my family:
My aunt, her husband and his caregiver, and my uncle, were murdered on October 7th.
8 family members, including the kids, were released.
My cousin's husband, a father of two young children who survived so much, is still captive in the hands of Hamas.
My family has been taken to Gaza.
We don't know their medical condition, we know that if my uncle isn't released soon he could die, he has a degenerative disease and needs treatment.
They are European citizens. I need anyone with any contacts to get in touch with me ASAP.
If anyone would have told me a week ago that we would have official confirmation this little girl is in the hands of Hamas, I would have thought it was the worst possible thing.
Now we are relieved, because she might be alive.
Why did I read my teaching evaluations? 😫
30 students: "this is so confusing, Naomi shows conflicting studies and explains we don't really know anything, I was expecting a list of cognitive development millstones."
Is this like a parent explaining there is no tooth fairy?
Not all scientists work in christian countries. We don't all celebrate Xmas. I don't expect you to not email me during Passover. Email me whenever you like: it's on me not to answer you during my days off.
Do you have an idea for an new and exciting collaboration? Want me to review a paper? Sure! If you can wait a couple of months - I'm gonna need a bit of rest now...
This beautiful child is spending her fifth night without her family, held hostage by Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
Please pray for Yaheli and help us bring her home.
This image of my kidnapped family members was true two weeks ago.
Now we know three of them were murdered.
Yesterday, after a heartbreaking funeral, we learned the two who are American citizens were released.
There are still 3 children, 4 women and a younger father held histage
How bad is the situation right now?
Women in my neighborhood are asking where they can donate breastmilk to babies whose mother is missing, dead or kidnapped.
As a post doc it was a bit painful to see these tweets, but I am sure many of you will be happy for me, so here goes:
I am excited to announce I will be joining the School of Psychological Sciences at the
@UofHaifa
as a faculty member this coming fall!! 🤩🥳
Let me dwell on the utterly mundane.
My aunt and uncle's house always smelled of coffee. Tari is a person who roasts their own coffee. Lilach bakes these amazing semolina and dates cookies. That's what I am thinking about when they are being held in Gaza. Help us get them home.
With a heavy heart and tears that never end, I must share with you that the body of Shaked Haran’s father, Avshalom was found last night. We received the notice while Shaked was meeting with the German Chancellor. He will be laid to rest today at 16:30.
We are broken but go on>
I am presenting the debate between usage-based and generative approaches to language acquisition in class. Which do you consider the most convincing studies that support either?
Our paper "Child-directed and overheard input from different speakers in two distinct cultures" was just accepted to Journal of Child Language! 🥳
@georgialoukatou
is the first author, but she is moving, so I get the honors of telling you all about it!
I read somewhere that when you reach 1,000 followers you start to reach a broader audience.
So hi! I am Naomi, I study language acquisition. I usually tweet about science, and occasionally about what my kids have to say about it.
Me, a language acquisition researcher to baby: "Do you want water?"
My 9 year old: "No, you need to hold the water and say "wa-ter" or he won't learn how to talk!"
New paper accepted in Language Learning (🥂🥂🥂) where we explore whether children do the same thing when learning a new word, and when processing a familiar one.
This beautiful girl was kidnapped by Hamas 43 days ago, along with her father and two brothers.
She is still there, praying to go back home.

I can't watch this, even though it's my cousin. I accidentally watched another video with her yesterday and broke down. I can't have my kids hear me like that again.
11 memberes of Shaked Haran’s family, resident of Kibbutz Beeri on the Gaza border, were kidnapped at gunpoint by Hamas. 4 of them- Her mother, sister, niece and nephew- 3 and 8 years old - are German citizens. In an interview to
@ZDF
she’s pleading for help to bring them back
38 weeks pregnant, I am in my nesting phase.
You know, buying equipment for my new lab, ordering laptops, getting eyetracker quotes - like every normal pregnant person 🤷🏻♀️
In my language acquisition class I ask the students to watch a TEDtalk by Deb Roy.
I ask them some questions about content, but also, I ask them what does Deb Roy's wife do.
Our paper '4-5-year-old children adapt to the reliability of conflicting sources of information to learn new words' was just accepted in Journal of Experimental Child Psychology!
If you want to know what young children can do in response to noise in their input - read on!
Our paper "Socioeconomic status correlates with measures of Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) system: a meta-analysis" was just published in Journal of Child Language
Our paper "3-4-year-old children rapidly adapt their predictions and use them to learn novel word meanings" just got officially accepted in Child Development! 💫🤗
Anyone knows whats the preprint policy in Child Development is? Can I post a preprint now?
Nightfall.
24 days Adi Shoham and her little girl, Yaheli have been captives in the brutal clutches of the Hamas.
Are they alive? Are they together? Who is hugging Yaheli tonight?
This is who we are fighting for, praying for, this is who the world has abandoned.
Another take home message:
Is screen time bad for language development? Depends which.
Children didn't learn new words when parents engaged with phone while teaching. They did learn from a FaceTime interaction.
Should we actually think of limiting parent-screen-time?

To be clear, Yuval's father was murdered, as were his (my) aunt and uncle. His mother, sister, brother in law, niece, nephew, aunt and cousin are hostages. He has hardly any close family left.
💥Families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza arrive at their 4th night camp at Ein Hemed. Yuval Haran of Beeri, seven of whose relatives are captive, addresses the group.
This is also your yearly reminder that we are not all Christians and this is not holiday season everywhere in the world. Look at this as an opportunity to reach out to reviewers with a different cultural/religious background than you're used to. 😉
Yearly reminder that everyone is trying to submit papers before Christmas and nobody wants to review them. Wait till Jan if you don't want grumpy editors and 10th choice reviewers.
what you need to know about the hostage situation TODAY, a 🧵:
- there is a deal on the table to release 50 hostages - this mean some children will be released WITHOUT their mothers.
Our first paper from my post doc has been published in Child Development!
tl;dr: young children rapidly adapt their predictions and use these adapted predictions to infer the meaning or novel words - thus linking prediction with language acquisition
I realized I didn't formally twit this: we found that children rapidly adapt expectations for a syntactic structure following new input, and that they use these adapted expectations to infer word meanings
@PsyArXiv
Our paper on siblings' effect on children's language acquisition is out in psychological science!
.
Here is my original thread about it, and here it the preprint
7 year old: my friend at school didn't believe me that babies learn to talk all by themselves, you don't have to teach them.
Me: tell him your mom is a language acquisition researcher.
Him: that's exactly what I told him!
Our new paper is out in Child Development, where we find out how children rapidly change their expectations to follow new evidence, and use these new expectations to learn words!
In a week I start teaching at the

This is us, three and a half years ago. She is pregnant with Yahel, held hostage with her in Gaza, I am pregnant with Tom, who I hug close every day, trying not to cry.
I worked on data preprocessing yesterday with a guy who uses

A forth kid is a great thing. You know exactly what to do, he sleeps well, eats well...
The only problem is you simultaneously have three more to take care of 😅
I am pretty excited about this new preprint I just posted:
It is a commentary on

@chbergma
@VictoriaSavalei
's "Six solutions for more reliable infant research"
I argue for the use of multiple measures to increase reliability in infant studies
OK, this is the most amazing baby ever!
He was fussing a bit in his playpen, so I said "just one sec, baby, mommy is updating R" - and you know what he did? He went to sleep, just like that!! 🤯
Out in press! 🍾
Three‐ to Four‐Year‐Old Children Rapidly Adapt Their Predictions and Use Them to Learn Novel Word Meanings - Child Development
Here is the preprint:
"We ask the world to stop the Israeli war on Hamas, but what do we offer as an alternative to stopping the war? [...] Knowing that Hamas can break out of the Gaza fence and repeat its massacre any minute?"
I opposed the way our government treats Gaza and I still do. 1/2
As Arabs, our message to the world cannot be restricted to eliciting global sympathy for the children of Gaza. We cannot depict ourselves as helpless children, behind whom we hide our failure to control our Hamas thugs who massacred 1300 non-combatant Israelis. This is a moral

I take a look at the children sitting in front of their screens.
In a moment they will knock wildly at our place too.

Am I crazy? Or am I the super mom othera claim I am?
I'll keep you posted... See you in September!
My Hebrew, French, English speaking 10yo moved to a school with a majority of Russian speaking kids, so he is picking up Russian. They learn Arabic in this new school so there's that.
Therefore, he decided it's a great time to start using Duolingo to learn.... Greek

Who do I @, again? I don't want to get blocked 😜
In awe yet again of

Not only am I starting a new year as a faculty today, I am also starting the year as a student, for the first time in many years!
Wish me luck in my first Arabic class today!
Am I not accusing him of anything. Neither do I think any malice is involved. I just hope I give my students, especially the men, something to think about.
I am submitting to some TT positions now and writing to a million friends to get advice. One thing they keep saying is: "you're CV looks great, it really is time to apply" and this makes me so happy! Wish me luck!

When her firstborn, Naveh, also held hostage in Gaza, was born, she told me she even loved it when he woke her up at night.
She is a mother who makes you feel bad for being a regular person, who just wants to sleep.
Just realized Academia sometimes feels like a game of Catan. You make one good choice at the beginning, and then all you have to do is sit there, and you'll accumulate resources even when it's not your turn.
Oh, and every one desperately needs a sheep.
I am not saying we have no alternative, I am asking what the alternative is.
I still have the same values as before my family was abducted and murdered.
My paradigms about how to fulfill them changed.
How do we stop this?

A small rent about small samples.
A colleague told me that they got a study published with 12 infants per group.

What wonderful 24 hours I just had. My first class ever was so much fun, and I just finished reading a student's draft for a paper, and it was SO good that I was moved to tears. What a great job I have.
