I did my entire PhD with a clock-in/clock-out mentality. I treated it like a 9-5 job. Where I had to work outside of those hours, I took the time back. I also had holidays. I submitted early & was awarded it without corrections. Any other attitude is rather toxic.
@seis_matters
So many of the responses apparently can’t conceive of a person who is excited about doing research and determined to be successful, even in exchange for some amount of personal enjoyment or free time. It is pretty hard to have a productive PhD with a clock-in clock-out mentality.
@STWarburton
I don't need to be accepting and kind towards Tory ideology, civility is as far as I can get myself. Other people's disappointment is irrelevant when compared to the horrors that is the current day Tory ideology and it's effects. Disappointment doesn't even approach my rage.
@OwenJones84
I just wrote to my MP to ask why people like me (a registered nurse of 14 years working in academia) can't volunteer to help in my spare time... I'm amazed there hasn't already been a call for volunteers. I really don't have the skills to work on wards, but I can vaccinate!
Its with great joy that I can annouce I have a contract with Routledge to write my book "The Moral Lessons of Chemsex: a critical perspective"
Today is the first day of writing, aim is to polish off two chapters this summer. Wish me luck!
@STWarburton
Maybe the UK should be a safe space for LGBT+ asylum seekers?
Anyway, saying Tories aren't welcome doesn't turn grindr into a dangerous place for them. They still have all their rights and privileges. They just now know, from multiple people, they're not welcome.
@GMPCityCentre
@AndyBurnhamGM
, I get that we don't want people smoking heroin on trams, but addiction isn't cured by "learning lessons" and getting arrested. The lack of any sense of care to this man is really disturbing.
@biminibabes
If you need a crowd funder, set one up. Many in our community want to support artists to make the right choices ❤️ good ethics doesn't pay bills
We've reached the inevitable within two days of teaching starting...
@OfficialUoM
is (finally) moving to "tier 3" alert level where "face to face provision" is provided in "as limited a number of situations as possible" (i.e. clinical skills).
@UM_UCU
did try to say 🤷♂️
@BenBGDalton
Hmmmm... Personally I would find this very difficult, there's sometimes confidential conversations that I need to have with students that would be difficult to have with a shared office. Also, researching porn in a shared office may be difficult.
@joseph_gellman
Her and Amber Rudd led on a very sensible consultation re gender self ID. I remember completing it and thinking "what level headed approaches that keep all sensible people happy". It's such a shame they were both ousted before they got chance to implement the findings.
@BBCNWT
@UKLabour
@Christian4BuryS
@William_Wragg
There may be disquiet about taking on a Tory MP in the Labour Party, but this does certainly give context for the pressures places on MPs to vote in particular ways... Public money should not be used for political gain.
Just been told I have been awarded open access funding for my "Moral Lessons of Chemsex" book 🤯🥳💃
I put LOADS of effort into the same application last year & didn't get it. Saw this year's application HOURS before the deadline, bashed out a revised application & bingo 🤣
My uni department has given everyone a "wellbeing day" today, which basically means "no work". I was starting to feel abit frazzled this week and a long weekend is exactly what I need 🙂
@MartinSLewis
@bbc5live
I moved from working as nurse on a horrifically managed NHS ward to a hospice, a pay cut of a couple of grand & increased commuting costs. I never ever regretted it. It had a much better culture of professional development & set me up for life on an amazing career trajectory.
@artcrimeprof
If you think they occasionally have trouble comprehending vegetarianism, try explaining that you don't want half a litre of wine, at lunch 🤣 even after I explain I'm on a cycling holiday and need to cycled 80km in the afternoon they still look at me like I killed the towns mayor
People saying in relation to Butler's interview "omg she CAN be clear about her thinking, why didn't she write Gender Trouble like that" 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Gender Trouble was published 30 years ago, she struggled (rightly so) finding a voice, and has developed much as a writer since.
Simple
I've decided to vote yes in the
@ucu
reballot. Mostly because this is a national reballot and therefore I am standing with my colleagues at places like
@qm_ucu
who are being subjected to horrific management, the same managers will ultimately be informing employer negotiations.
@DrAshleyMorgan1
@leeskeet
I'm glad Lily has a supportive employer, but it makes me sad the response wasn't more immediate. What prevented Lily reporting this harassment straight away? He/they have, in all likelihood, got away without any consequences. Still so much to do so action can we swift.
New paper about chemsex and peer support has been accepted 😄 will hopefully be able to post a link in the next week or two, special thanks goes to my research intern and co-author Sydney King who did alot of the heavy lifting with the literature reviewing.
I know there's a lot of frustration amongst
@UCU
members, but I'd like to suggest our problems are rooted in a Government that uses division as a ruling tactic. I'm not dismissing the hurt people feel, but I am suggesting that this is exactly how The Tories want us to feel.
What annoys me most about the Manchester Student Halls lockdown the decision to base security staff there 24/7, but not any support staff... There's just "a phone number". It smacks of authoritarianism that should never occur, especially in liberal Universities.
@theAliceRoberts
Isn't music all about communality of experience though? More so when live and with other people. Surely the lights help reflect those wave of emotion that connects us together. Yes there's a commercialism in it, but it's Glastonbury, you've already bought into that.
Nancy Rothwell is "surprised by the speed & scale of numbers testing positive".
@UM_UCU
,, myself & my colleagues weren't. Then she suggests that student choice drove decisions to bring students back to campus, thus evacuating her responsibilities for leadership to consumerism 👎
1400 students have been infected in Manchester
Nancy Rothwell, VC, Manchester U, says they have been surprised by “speed + scale” of transmission. States they could have communicated measures required to students better

@SistersUncut
well done for today 👊
Revising a paper after getting back peer reviewer comments. They were insightful, critical, but most certainly not cruel. As I'm revising it, I'm getting the distinct feeling this is one of the best things I've written in a long time 🙂
To put this is proportion, £900k is (roughly) enough to give EVERY academic member of staff at Aberdeen a 2% bonus... And then in the same breath we are told there isn't enough money to find about a 1% rise for the rank and file staff 🤦♂️🤷♂️
5 years ago today the
@ChemsResearcher
project started recruitment. Today I sent a (hopefully final) draft of my book proposal to an editor... It's been a very very long project, but I'm genuinely excited for this major step forward. Wish me luck!

@Sydney_Uni
This is why I am trialling an in-person lecture-free method of teaching this semester. I've recorded short videos on key themes, 5-7 mins each with about 4-6 videos each week. Then instead of 1 hour lecturer and 1 hour seminar, we just have a 2 hour seminar. Need to evaluate it🤞
When faced with questions of academic standards for PhD students and ECR, I often find myself asking "did the current professoriate do this when they were young?". The answer is invariably, no.
expecting PhD students to graduate with publications in ridiculously competitive journals that take forever to even reply to submissions is unrealistic and places a dangerous amount of pressure on students and seriously academia can just fuck off with that expectation
I've decided to set up a monthly DD to the
@ULivUCU2
strike fund, it's dead easy to do, full details are in the tweet below. I'll keep donating every month until the dispute is resolved. Please consider doing the same, every pound makes a difference.
The rumours are true. Over 10k has poured into the local fund in four days 💸💸! Nothing management hate more than a branch able to sustain itself after they attempt to impoverish us. Every tenner helps so get donating 👇

I just read that David Stuart has died... I know this will be a huge shock to many. I don't know any of the details, but I just want to put it out there that I am very happy to talk to friends who may need someone to talk to. You have my contact details if you want or need them.
Almost unimaginable that the previous education secretary would have sat down with UCU, the Universities Minister barely even gave us the time of day... Hopefully they can get some productive conversations happening with employers too. We desperately need a plan.
The Labour Government believes in working in partnership with our higher and further education workforce.
Great to talk to
@DrJoGrady
of
@UCU
about common concerns and the challenges we will face together.
@trishgreenhalgh
Huge amounts. On a side note I taught students about your BMJ paper on the precautionary principle yesterday. Hopefully it will have sunk in to future nurses about the importance of preventing harm even when evidence is lacking. They really seemed to engage with it 👍
"In Manchester, students are being prevented from leaving by security"
Let me be very clear. Universities are education and research establishments. Not quasi impromptu prisons.
We should be supporting students to quarantine, not coercing them to.
@graceyswer
@TheJasonDomino
Interesting thread. I find it bafflingly anyone can sustain the argument that payment invalidates consent. People are constantly paid to take part in drugs trials, and no-one suggests this is routinely some form of assault or poisoning... 🤷♂️
@ZareerMasani
@CharlesJSturge
If it breeds self fulfilling attitudes like this? No, it is not. Blind rhetoric does not constitute an argument for quality, it detracts from it.
Alot of what we're seeing in Fallowfield tonight could have been avoided if the
@OfficialUoM
SLT had listened to staff concerns about covid & on campus teaching back in April. But they didn't. Instead, they have publicised a "blended" approach to learning.
On a separate but related note (which isn't trying to criticize Mary Beard) I often feel like my decision to work a strict 35-40hr week disadvantages me. It's almost like people who work 70hrs are cheating their way to the top, and then set the expectations that high.
Can I ask academics of any level of seniority how many hours a week they reckon they work. My current estimate is over 100. I am a mug. But what is the norm in real life. ?
For COVID the UK paid for & ordered enough to vaccinate the population several times over, with orders placed before vaccines had even been proven to be effective
For Monkeypox they've given cities like Manchester afew hundred doses, for a vaccine which is safe & effective 🤦♂️
This is (reportedly) what the VC of
@OfficialUoM
said - THIS is part of the problem. It MUST be possible for academic careers to be 9-5 jobs (or a 35 hour week). Suggestion otherwise is dangerous, and edging towards illegal working practices as per the EU working time directive.
I've been doing some more thinking about the crackdown on gay fetish nights/sex clubs in Manchester, specifically how it harms established patterns of culturally appropriate health promotion and harm reduction
Good things come to those who wait... Just got the peer review comments back for an article I submitted 6 months ago... MINOR AMENDMENTS, and the comments clearly engage critically, thoughtfully and generously with the paper, what a nice way to finish a week
Wow... Well done Manchester. I couldn't be there tonight, I had a long-standing commitment which would have been wrong for me to cancel. So proud of my city and community ♥️
Us homosexuals often look upon straight cultute with a certain ethnographic fascination. It can teach us so much about how not to live and love. Sometimes I shudder to think what we would do without this important pedagogy in our fabulous lives 💃
Anything above my contracted hours, I take back. That includes travel time undertaken for work (i.e. to conferences). Always have. Always will. It's a contract. I also take 100% of my annual leave, every year, without fail. It's not a "vexed issue".
Overtime is an increasingly vexed issue with some workers pushed to the brink by unreasonable unpaid work. But how many additional hours are too many? When should employees be paid for extra work?
Had my covid vaccine yesterday, will hopefully start vaccinating people myself in a few days. I feel fine. It was also amazing to see how safe and efficient the mass vaccination centre was ✅💉

Weird. She's six, in a school... This should be a safe space for her to run, play, jump, and do flips without having to worry about showing her knickers... Honestly 🙄 it's not even any different to what a child would be wearing when swimming...

If you're a Manchester or Salford Gay ™️ and had your Monkeypox vaccination today, your next task is to tell your friends, lovers & fuck buddies, & encourage them to get vaccinated too.
Hathersage definitely have clinics running 14th & 20th, same rules as today.
Frustrated about why

UoM students (not the whole University, though I think
@UM_UCU
should consider similar) are to hold a vote of no confidence in Nancy Rothwell, the VC of
@OfficialUoM
. In the 18 years I've had an association with UoM, I've never known this happen, I don't rate her chances.
BREAKING: We got the 400 signatures needed! This means the university must now hold a referendum of no confidence in Nancy Rothwell and other executive officers in which all UoM students can vote.
#NoMoreNancy
Some of my friends are increasibly finding it impossible to get diagnosis or treatment on the NHS. They have instead had to rely on private services which aren't included in the figures. Research on how prevelant private care is could be helpful
I'm openly critical of
@OfficialUoM
on here, however for once I want to highlight that the direction of travel is very positive: a harm reduction approach to student drug use is very positive.
Couldn't agree more. People have ALREADY purchased the drugs with the (almost inevitable) intent to ingest them. Pill testing offers a VERY powerful safety check to ensure people know what they're taking. Knowledge is power, and power can keep people alive.
In a society where drugs are illicit and users have no idea of the constituents of what they are taking pill testing is essential. The detractors say it encourages drug use. Untrue. It encourages a safer approach to drug taking which is happening anyway.
@theRCN
Sadly I don't work for an NHS/Agenda For Change employer, but when the time comes I'll donate to strike funds and attend picket lines in support of my colleagues.
This really concerns me, yes we should have research about puberty blockers and their short, mid and long term effects, but research and "uncertainty" shouldn't be used by politicians to completely halt and then ration via research what was hitherto standard practice.
The NHS took the decision to stop the routine use of puberty blockers for gender incongruence/dysphoria in children.
They are establishing a clinical trial with NIHR to ensure the effects of puberty blockers can be safely monitored and provide the evidence we need.

It might have taken a month, (so far) six redrafts (one from scratch) but the concluding chapter for The Moral Lesson of Chemsex from my
@ChemsResearcher
project is finally taking shape... really looking forward to critical engagement from colleagues at the

conference
A student just gave me a thankyou card... sweetest comment I've ever had: "you've helped build up my confidence in Harvard Referencing and searching for academic sources"... Almost in tears! Honestly, after the 20 month car crash we have all be having, this meant so much.
I almost never log into work emails on my phone (couple of times a year, max). I start at 9, finish at 5 & take 1 hr for lunch. I also go for short walks through the day and take 41 days holiday per year. No one will thank me for doing otherwise when I'm dead.

Just did the first video for my online lecture... It took 14 takes... 😬
I've ironed out afew of the teething issues so will get a little quicker, but this is taking ALOT longer than I initially predicted it would 😲
Anyone else on

I'm so excited to start teaching our MSc nursing students about ethics today. It's genuinely my favourite topic to teach. I'm taking what many may consider an unorthodox approach to the topic drawing on a wide range of disciplinary approaches🤞the students like it!
This makes for disturbing reading that one can be made redundant for not engaging in "mainstream" research. It really makes me consider if I want to continue in academia ☹️
"I am truly sorry that
@uniofleicester
has come to this; where even mediocrity is a dream to aspire to, where lies & half truths masquerade as knowledge... I wish the institution well... but it is in line to be the first British university to fail in centuries..."
@NCanagarajah
For what it's worth, my Grandad was an academic, and he said the only thing that ever resolved disputes was a marking boycott. Solidarity (and donations to the strike fund) to all those involved.
So, here's the thing. My pay has been stopped because I am taking part in a legally-sanctioned assessment boycott. Because I won't mark 30 exam scripts, I am losing ALL of my pay. I should, apparently, do the remaining 98% of my job 'voluntarily'.
@ULivUCU2
What's scary is these people, after causing chaos and upset for the rank and file staff, are viewed in a positive enough light by senior management at other unis as to get jobs...
Goodbye
