This past year, our program obtained an open surgical skills curriculum for major trauma, which uses an advanced modular operative simulator to practice treating high-acuity, low occurrence injuries. The “Cut Suit” trainer is a state of the art simulator that allows residents to perform anything from an ED thoracotomy, complete with repair of cardiac injuries and cross-clamping the aorta, to a laparotomy, with repair of major liver bleeding, splenectomy and shunting of major vessels, with real bleeding, and without risking the life of a real patient. Our program was part of the first-ever pilot program using this simulator to train non-military surgeons, and is the only residency program in the world to use it more than 10 times per year. The Cut Suit system was obtained through a grant applied for and awarded, from the Committee of Interns and Residents’ Patient Care Trust Fund @cirseiu through the NYC Health & Hospitals system @BellevueHosp. The grant proposal was led by 2 of our residents, Pratik Chandra and Yanzhi Yang. #NYULHSurgery
