One of Nigeria's greatest challenges, especially in the agricultural sector, is policy implementation. While we have some of the best-written policies globally, implementation often lags behind, limiting their impact. At the Nigerian Agribusiness Group (NABG), we are committed to ensuring that agricultural policies are not just developed but implemented effectively to create a favorable environment for agribusinesses and stakeholders across the sector. One notable policy is the Revised National Agricultural Seed Policy, launched in 2022 but yet to be fully implemented. Recognizing the critical role quality seeds play in transforming agriculture, NABG took swift action, mobilizing stakeholders to chart a clear path toward implementation. With the financial and technical support of HarvestPlus, Farm & Infrastructure Foundation (FIF), and National Agricultural Seed Council, we developed a comprehensive Implementation Framework for the Seed Policy. This framework, created through a collaborative process involving diverse stakeholders including Seed Enterpreneurs, regulators, academia, etc. was officially handed over to the Director General of the Seed Council on January 24, 2025. This milestone marks just the beginning. We will work closely with the Seed Council to create more awareness about the policy and continue mobilizing stakeholders to support its adoption and utilization. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient agricultural sector for Nigeria. #NABG #seedcouncil #seedpolicy #handoverceremony #implementationframework

Effective policy advocacy requires accurate data and reliable information. At NABG, we understand this imperative, which is why we prioritize ensuring that our advocacy efforts are grounded in current research and evidence. Last year, we commissioned a comprehensive policy study on six key value chains: tomatoes, kenaf, fonio, maize, soybeans, and garlic. These value chains were carefully selected due to their significant untapped potential and the opportunities they present for Nigeria's agricultural sector. On Thursday, 23rd January 2025, we convened stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to discuss the study’s findings and gather valuable feedback to refine the report further. A major outcome of this study is the development of a policy brief, which we plan to present to the Presidency at our upcoming Presidential Roundtable next month. Once finalized, the full report will be published on the NABG website, where it will be accessible for download and shared widely with stakeholders to aid decision-making and planning in the sector. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), for their invaluable support in making this study possible.

This weekend, the Nigerian Agribusiness Group (NABG), led by its President, Arc Kabir Ibrahim, and the Director General, Jafar Umar, participated in a high-level delegation to Cairo, Egypt. The delegation represented Nigeria in a forum organized by the Egypt-Nigeria Business Council, aimed at fostering collaboration between the two nations, particularly in agriculture. The Nigerian delegation included representatives from the Kaduna and Katsina State Governments, as well as the Ministers of Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, and Water Resources. Private sector players from Nigeria also participated, making the engagement dynamic and impactful. In his address, Arc Kabir Ibrahim emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration between Nigeria and Egypt, the two largest economies in Africa. He highlighted the shared opportunities and similarities between both countries, noting that such partnerships could be mutually beneficial. He informed the forum that while Nigeria has over 80 million hectares of arable land, less than 40% is currently utilized, and he invited the Egyptian private sector to consider Nigeria as a prime destination for agricultural investments. Arc Kabir Ibrahim also accompanied the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Abubakar Kyari, CON, to other strategic meetings around Cairo. These engagements focused on advancing Nigeria’s agricultural sector through strategic partnerships and knowledge exchange. #NABG #agribusinessinnigeria #agribusiness

This week, Director General Nigeria Agribusiness Group (NABG) was in Katsina and attended a 1-day training organized by the Katsina Investment Promotion Agency (KIPA) on non-oil Exports. The DG moderated a session with stakeholders, specifically regulators (NAFDAC, SON, NAQS), and a private company where we discussed conditions and the standards for exports. NABG is proud to associate itself with Katsina State, and we will continue to drive initiatives that will advance agribusiness in the state. #NABG #nigeriaagribusinessgroup #AgribusinessinNigeria#kipa

Dear Nigerian Farmers, let us unite for a food-secure and prosperous Nigeria! Nigeria stands on the verge of a significant food insecurity crisis if we do not act decisively, particularly in light of the macroeconomic instability driven by currency volatility, insecurity, climate change, and inequality. While I do not intend to foster despair, it is crucial to recognize that achieving food sufficiency for all Nigerians by the first quarter of 2025 is vital for the sustainability of our nation. I speak from a deep sense of commitment, having dedicated much of my 66 years to agricultural advocacy. In 2024, we witnessed various initiatives aimed at stabilizing Nigeria’s food system, providing essential support to smallholder farmers (SHFs), micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), small-scale producers (SSPs), and vulnerable populations. However, food inflation continues to soar at an alarming rate of 39.93%, posing a serious threat of hunger for many Nigerians. In 2025, it is imperative that we come together as stakeholders and farmers, collaborating closely with the government to liberate Nigeria from the clutches of hunger and extreme poverty. This collective effort requires us to operate as a unified body with shared interests and a common purpose. In the first quarter of 2025, specifically around mid-February, we will host the Agribusiness Presidential Round Table (PRT) under the auspices of the Nigeria Agribusiness Group (NABG). This event will serve as a critical call to action for all sector stakeholders, including smallholder farmers, service providers, food processors, commodity traders, academia, researchers, donor agencies, private sector representatives, and government bodies responsible for agriculture. Our goal is to reinvigorate Nigeria’s food system and, upon the successful convening of the PRT, NABG will develop an action strategy and implementation plan to achieve semi-food sufficiency by 2025, set medium-term goals for 2027, and ultimately attain sustainable food security by 2030. While these objectives may appear ambitious, they are indeed feasible through our collective determination to confront our country's pressing challenges. This, in my view, represents the true essence of the renewed hope agenda! Arc. Kabir Ibrahim, FNIA President, Nigeria Agribusiness Group (NABG) National President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) Chairman BOT, National Agricultural Foundation of Nigeria (NAFN)
