Okay, I'm starting my thread of #2025Books. I read 17 when the goal was 15 in 2024. In 2025 I'm aiming for 20.

Afriforum: "we are indigenous to this country." Trump Administration: "descendants of settlers"
The United States stands ready to help the descendants of settlers in South Africa who are being expropriated and abused by the South African government. Pursuant to President Trumpβs Executive Order, the State Department is suspending all non-life saving aid to the Republic of South Africa. Persecuted South African farmers and other innocent victims being targeted solely based on their race who choose to resettle in America will be welcome. The United States will also defend the rights and interests of those remaining descendants of settlers threatened with expropriation without compensation and other intolerable abuses. We will no longer stand by while God-given rights are so cruelly violated.

Hi Tammy! I know you're probably not that familiar with your new refugees, but I've known them my whole life so here's a free tip; they really, REALLY, don't like it when you point out that they're "settlers." You're not wrong Tammy, but don't do it. Forgive her @kalliekriel.

Not entirely true. There will be interactions with black people. They'll be making your meals, bringing them to you, cleaning up after you, and handing you that African curio you just bought.
As a tourist in South Africa, you can travel the whole country w/o interacting with Black South Africans. The hotels, restaurants, bars, and tourist hot spots are full of white people. You see immediately who has wealth & who doesn't. White Afrikaners aren't persecuted. My God.

Screw that. Nobody is mocking afrikaners writ large. And to pretend that any serious person is doing so is at best disingenuous. Anyway, who is this guy? He's forever popping up on my TL trying to sound like a voice of reason when most times he's just tone-policing us.
I appreciate that this might go down like a lead balloon with some of my friends, but in my view, the current orgy of mocking Afrikaners serves no good purpose. I believe that the expropriation and genocide claims have been incorrect and harmful (I have taken much flak for saying this). But while so many gleefully enjoy the discomfort of Afrikaners, the derision can betray an ugly self-righteousness. "But they deserve it", is a response that misses the point entirely. "South Africa belongs to all who live in it" is something that we should all take more seriously, and if there are factual disputes, these should be addressed. Secondly, what if there are real concerns, and the misdirected complaints mean that these are never dealt with? Who can honestly say with certainty that the Expropriation Act will not be abused? What if we are all playing into the hands of those who profit from division and strife? Would it not be better for all concerned for there to be a concerted effort to bring opposing parties together, and to develop a better mutual understanding (given that we know that a few die-hards on each side will stubbornly refuse this)? [I shall not respond to any comment that places all of the blame on the other side, or says that "they" won't listen.]
