I really need people to stop compartmentalizing aspects of artistic media like this. They're less like isolated mechanical components and more like tissues of a living body: differentiated in form and function, but unified in overall purpose.
Writing in movies is more important than the direction, cinematography and everything else.

Major life update: I'm permanently moving to the US a month from now, for my new job.
Been over two decades now since I moved to India. Feels a bit surreal to be moving back after all this while. Don't know how to feel about it. Hope it all works out.

I've noticed this to be far less of a problem with manga. With manga I feel like people are always exploring and keeping themselves updated, but with anime I feel like some content creators' grasp of the medium and the fandom is permanently stuck in the early 2000s.

I was only vaguely aware of Ōshima Yumiko via reading up on the Year 24 Group. Yesterday I learnt her magnum opus Wata no Kuni Hoshi has an anime film. Watched it today. I'm not the same person anymore.

I'm not super comfortable when people refer to Magnetic Rose as a Satoshi Kon film, with zero mention of Kōji Morimoto (the actual director). Kon adapted the script from an Otomo short story, and is also credited for layouts and setting, but other than that it's a Morimoto film.

Most younger fans I interact with in IRL spaces are unfamiliar with Haruhi, Lucky Star, Madoka, Higurashi, Elfen Lied, NHK, etc...shows that were considered staples of the medium not too long ago. Hell, I've even seen K-On and Code Geass go unrecognised.

It's insane how much of a cultural phenomenon Yuru Camp is and the massive effect it had on anime culture and the community as a whole. Episode 13 will truly mark the end of an era, probably the biggest ending since 2014. Afro-sensei really made an iconic behemoth.

Just read Let's Go Karaoke, a two chapter manga about a yakuza guy who turns to a middle school choir kid for singing practice.
I seriously liked it. It's Wayama Yama's usual brand of quirky deadpan comedy, but layered over a touching coming-of-age story of male bonding.

I wish more people here tried out CGDCT/moe shows. Most people here dismiss them as "fluff", or say "it's not for me". To which I say: there is a CGDCT for everyone. The sheer variety of shows under the CGDCT umbrella is astounding. Camping, music, theatre, steampunk, everything!

Might be a stretch, but I feel like the hyperfocus on plot holes is a function of the general underestimation of authors and the amount of thought they put in. As in, when we encounter an inconsistency, our first thought is that the author simply forgot or wasn't thinking enough.
I'm gonna say it.
"Plot holes" are the lowest form of media criticism.

For a "redemption arc" to work, the character must be worth redeeming in the first place. For that reason, it is important not to go overboard when it comes to depicting the negative traits of the character. Some things just can't be redeemed, you see.

So an incident happened this morning: all three of the stray kittens I was taking care of died. Still don't know what killed them, but the neighbors tell me monkeys did it. The mother has been searching for them since morning.

Lately I'd been taking care of a new stray kitten. He was really friendly and playful.
Today, a dog attacked him. He's alive, but he appears to be paralyzed from the waist down. Can't move his hind legs or his tail.
