A7 Pointing out cognates is a good way to help students highlight their background knowledge. For example the word “solar” is related to the Spanish word “sol” and the French word “soleil”. Multilingual students can share their knowledge and help others learn. #engsschat

@TheThinkingProj @Steph_Sukow @diffit Yes to this. I’m lucky to have a class set of headphones. I have Ss watch videos independently so they can change the captions to their language, slow down the speed, and go back and rewatch when needed.

A5 for me it’s been about finding what is MOST essential to understand and doing less. Students are still held to a high academic standard, but there’s less to cover. #engsschat

A4 The biggest thing for me, though, is just to SLOW. DOWN. Again, this helps more than just multilingual learners. Universal design for education! #engsschat

A4 Making everything visible as well as auditory helps more than just ML students. Put important vocab on the wall or a place where Ss can easily access. All instructions in writing as well as orally. #engsschat

find a classmate who does not speak their language and share their answers. Today we were talking about sensory language so the question was “if you could only keep one of your senses, which would it be and why?” 2/2 #engsschat

Social studies hive mind: What are your favorite primary sources to use when introducing sourcing skills? Pref few or no words because this is for English learners. Thanks!! #sschat #socialstudies

@MrRoughton I always say that just like there is more than one way to participate in democracy, there is more than one way to participate in discussion. Speaking out loud in front of the class is only one option; writing and small group discussions count too.

A6 I always tell students that they can rise above the poor behavior we see among candidates. But it takes a lot of practice.
Last Question! Q6: How can we connect this to big events coming up soon? What are Con Day and Election resources that incorporate dialogue? #sschat

A5 we have to remember that it’s a person behind the person on the other side of the screen. We need to believe people’s experiences and back up our own statements with facts.

A2 I start by showing a couple of clips and having students follow along with a checklist. Then we move on to a fishbowl and continue building capacity. #sschat
Sometimes the hardest part can just be getting started...how do you introduce dialogue in your classroom? #sschat #NCCed @BRInstitute
