@alexlindsay I think saying that students are talking because teachers are boring is quite a stretch. And it still doesn't mean that we don't insist on silence.

@blueicecream I think this is around school expectations and what you want in your classroom. If this is what you want, but there are chances to talk Maths at other points, I don't see an issue with this!

@DavidNautilus1 I completely agree about the need for talk/discussion etc. I'm just saying that when a teacher is talking/delivering etc., stu's need to be silent

@CarlRossiniJr No need to talk whilst a teacher is providing directed modelling/instruction though?

I don't disagree with asking q's etc. - far from it. I'm saying that when a teacher is talking, students shouldn't be talking. And when a student answers a question, then no other person should be talking. Certainly q's are imperative, but not if others are just having little chats whilst others are working.

@rcbg62 Okay, this is somewhat true. But one thing that doesn't need to change is insisting on silence when you are teaching a class.

@smurph1905 And if that's what you like in your room that's fine. I want everyone to agree that silence during teacher instruction is a non-negotiable first!

@PaulWat5 It isn't about sounding important. It's that we should be allowed to insist on silence during instruction.

@WonderStruck33 I appreciate that. I don't think indep work has to be done in silence, but I can completely appreciate why some people like that. Sometimes I did, other times I wanted chatter.

@TheStudentLeads It is a non-negotiable. It seems scary to say, and people like to jump on backs when we say that, but it is imperative on those occasions

@RachelFairfiel1 Potentially - but we shouldn't need to apologise for insisting silence when a teacher is speaking

@neilayates @etaknipsa No its true, but that isn't related to the fact that students need to be silent when we are teaching them

@PhillipJCoulson Oh yes, absolutely... The basics of learning - if you don't listen to the new information, you won't magically know it 🤷
