Hey, just some rough figures for theatre folk. Top tier theatre equity minimum wage for performers in 2012 was about £607. Today it is about £712. That is a 16% increase over a decade. For perspective, inflation has been roughly 2.76% per year since 2012, that’s 31.25% in total.

A thread: I find it interesting the level of resistance to change in the theatre industry. Asking for time off in a period where most (not all) non essential jobs have time off so one can spend time with their family is met with “get a new job” or eyerolls.

Meaning, in the last 10 years performers have ended up 15.25% below the rate of inflation. With the cost of living going up exponentially, it must be time to have a serious conversation with Equity + Solt about wages in theatre. At this rate a long term career is not sustainable.

Theatre folk work 6 days a week, doing 8 shows a week. An industry that got decimated and abandoned during the pandemic. If that experience taught me anything it was that as much as I love what I do, it doesn’t define me. My true joy comes from my family/friends/relationships.

Paul O’Grady was a British institution, he made drag mainstream in this country and his love for animals created a new legacy for him in later years! He was a reminder of how we were robbed of a generation of queer artists due to HIV/Aids and will be greatly missed! A true icon.
