It's been quite a journey so far and about a year and a half since I started this project. Here's a little demo so far of what I've been working on in this video. What is it? It's a real-time biomechanical representation rendering engine that takes monocular (phone video) video and predicts: 1. Body position 2. Body shape 3. Musclulature 4. Bone 5. Flexion/extension How it works. Inspired by SMPL and its principal of homogenizing/compressing human shape variability into a small number of parameters, this model is trained on registrations of points, poses, and classes. However the model uses a density-based registration principal that is derived from CT/MRI scans to accurately determine bone, joint, and muscle volume. Current Stage. Currently it's by no means real-time and takes about 200-300ms to render a frame and as you can see there are numerous aspects that need considerable work, but the foundation is finally established. As the compression is so efficient, I am planning to open-source the front-end and have a tldraw (web-based vector software) style canvas where a near-inifinite number of movements can be added, shared, sorted, and saved as unique pages accessable by address/QR code. The goal here really is to streamline movement logging and evaluation. The backend does the heavy-lifting but the ultimate goal is to get to real-time rendering.
