*Link in post* We now have badges & sew on patches as well as car stickers
Hopefully be able to stock t-shirts & hoodies soon too.
Barely any mark up on these items, & any profits go straight back into campaign, this is about getting message out! ?
“We had something that was infallible. The hard shoulder was always there &didn’t make mistakes & we’ve replaced it with something that isn’t always there &does make mistakes. That was a conscious decision. They have designed danger into smart motorways" ?
1/2Today went better than could have imagined. Impact of coffin after coffin after coffin really hammered the message home.
I can’t calculate the number of media interviews we all did between us. Lots of members of the public came and asked questions and showed their support.
As if
@kategarraway
and her children aren't having a terrible enough time at the moment. They must have been absolutely terrified, we are so pleased to hear they are safe. We know only too well just how terrible it could have been.
There are currently 4 different bodies/departments/watchdogs reviewing smart motorways.
2 of 4 four reviewed smart motorways just 12 months ago.
Meanwhile, last Saturday yet another person was killed on smart motorway.

@grantshapps
@HighwaysEngland
getting there! slowly, but getting there, we do still need funds for the legal fee's. the reporting of the facts has been over simplified and the government are only scraping one type of s.m, not all we still need the pressure on them
#smartmotorwayskill
Dont think most appreciate the sheer terror of breaking down on a smart motorway until they have experienced it
Its bad enough on any motorways and yes, hard shoulder are dangerous places, but thats like saying life boats are precarious, so dont use them!!
"The government claims giving us the hard shoulder back would “come at a significant cost” and be “too disruptive”."
It wouldnt cost a penny to flick the switch on the gantry sign and close the 'first' lane.
Why are we having to ask this?why is a bereaved family on the sofa with a laptop having to try & spread this message to educate drivers about roads that have been changed on the quiet? where is the massive advertisement campaign that should be all over the media
@HighwaysEngland
1/2. Very positive meeting today with South Yorkshire Police. They have confirmed that they are now investigating
@HighwaysEngland
for potential corporate manslaughter charges in deaths of Jason Mercer, Alexandru Murgeanu & Nargis Begum.
For confirmation and clarity Claire Mercer of Smart Motorways Kill has reported Highways England to the Police for corporate manslaughter, this is AS WELL as the judicial review to get smart motorways scrapped.
"In last 3 days we have lost control of signs, signals, SVD &CCTV on every motorway &smart motorway in north-west for 5 hours
failure of SVD &CCTV meant we had no clue when vehicles broke down in live lane on s.m
People are NOT safe on our roads &won’t be until s.m are scrapped"
"your position as CEO of National Highways is untenable and you, and those directly responsible for the ALR policy which has cost so many lives, should resign"
Details of the protest (where definitely ARE NOT blocking anything or gluing ourselves to anything) are here ->
Are you coming
@grantshapps
?? you could meet some of the families you decimated.
@NationalHways
In memory of Jason Mercer and Alexandru Murgeanu who died on this day 4 years ago. Two of the many killed because of ludicrous profit/budget based decision to remove the hard shoulder
The fight continues.
We can not give up, I can not give up
We will get the hard shoulder back
good day at the Tory party conference. Plenty media interest & lot of support and/or ppl telling experiences of smart motorways
Bumped into Huw Merrimen, Grant Shapps however was faster moving!
Lots of achy feet now back on the coach heading home after a very early start.
All lanes open according to gantry/fool proof systems to detect stranded vehicles. Yet undetected vehicle in live lane &its almost obscured by darkness.
this is exact J where less than 3 y ago horrific failure of s.m led to formation of this campaign.
Nothing has been learnt.
"'If you had to stop on a smart motorway would you rather do it on a hard shoulder or in a live lane of traffic. That’s what it comes down to, regardless of the data"
The news today that ministers are "considering" scrapping all new smart motorway projects, is very interesting. I am seeking clarification on exactly what has been said.
But the big problem is it's the existing roads that are killing us
so the fight still goes on!
To
@Keir_Starmer
My husband was killed on s.m on this day 2019. All the time I have been campaigning Labour has pledged once in power they would “reinstate the hard shoulder”
In fact, this is current screen shot of webpage Labours Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh..
With up to 50 children having to climb out the back window of an overturned coach in a live lane, can you image the outcome if there had not be a hard shoulder for them to get to?
We have spoken to operators, contractors and traffic officers down from the south west all the way to the north east expressing their concerns about smart motorways.
Please feel free to contact us to share your stories completely anonymously.
Shapps "to get them sorted out." so my husband and 57 others .... so far, were just collateral in some kind of just-try-it-see-if-it-works type test??!!
2/2 massive thank you to Mike Rawson for his diligent efforts in helping organise this and to all the stewards for helping keep us safe.
If anybody has any photos can you share them
This battle will be fought in the court of public opinion, when we get enough of the public to show how angry they are, then we will get the hard shoulder back!
2nd Smart Motorways Kill protest will take place on Sunday October 2nd, at 10am.
***Petitions, complaints, Facebook groups aren’t getting hard shoulder back. Getting off your asses & turning up with many likeminded people at venue that will have countries media present, will!***
@Mark_J_Harper
How are you listen to concerns?? It’s the existing ones that are killing us!
Half the battle won, other half to go and I will get the hard shoulder back on ALL motorways
In memory of Jason Mercer & Alexandru Murgeanu, killed 2 years ago today.
They didn't need to die & only did because
@HighwaysEngland
/
@grantshapps
are blindly pushing on with m'way expansion in climate crisis/pandemic.
See people not contracts & bids.
#justturnthebloodythingsoff
350 miles of smart motorway ‘brought in by stealth’
@HighwaysEngland
accused of introducing s.m by stealth to avoid public scrutiny.
Independent report states repeatedly misled over motorways without a hard shoulder, with “incomplete information”.
@HighwaysEngland
This advert is an insult!! not subject for bad comedy & doesn't say what to do if cant "go left" Send me address to forward 20 mail/week we get "car stopped *WITHOUT WARNING*" but its ok because you charge motorist higher recovery fee (if still alive) no wonder you think it funny
On my way to do lot of interviews about the government’s announcement last today about smart motorways but after a long phone call from Grant Shapps last night I can state categorically that smk do not back these 20 COMPROMISES, we need the hard shoulder &smk will not settle
Emergency refugee areas are only safer than a hard shoulder IF (and it’s a very big if) you can reach them.
Emergency refuge areas do not help emergency vehicles get through 4 lanes of stuck traffic. When minutes and seconds are vital.
"Where else in day to day life are we not informed that a dangerous environment is more dangerous than normal, the governing body know about it & aren't telling us?
'Surely this is not just dereliction of duty of care it's active endangerment of public"
"The whistleblower, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Stopped vehicle detection had a catastrophic failure on all smart motorways for some of the weekend and into Monday.
“National Highways did not tell the public what had happened"
......
@grantshapps
this isn't going to go away, are you really going to wait till its a coach full of school kids? that will blot your copy book & affect your golden hand shake/future peerages/corporate rolls, just like it did for Jim O'Sulivan (does that motivate you perhaps?)
And first legal shot has been fired!
Experts report finished after over year of work. Purpose of commissioning independent report was:
Judicial review must be files within 3 months of decision/action, obviously s.m have been in longer......see more here
Been sent the email below. I got their permission before publishing this.
Note: not being able 2 control ANY m/ways in country for 11 hours! including type that no longer have hard shoulders. 11 hours! & at no point did NH bosses order 1st lane tobe turned off as temp h/shoulder
"Mrs Mercer “I sincerely hope police do investigate.2 coroners have highlighted obvious & foreseeable dangers
@HighwaysEngland
introduced. Pretty concrete & I will continue legal action if
@syptweet
does not do its duty.”"
PDF of article to follow soon
We want to confirm detail of protest that we have been working on.
We will have a long procession of full size burial coffins with us, we feel the impact of seeing coffin, after coffin being carried across Westminster Bridge will have an impact that will drive our message home.
This is why we need the hard shoulder back on existing motorways. Jason& Alexandru couldn’t get over barrier, Mrs Begum couldn’t get over barrier, Derek Jacobs didn’t get a chance So how on earth is person with mobility issues meant to!!!
Why do we need to expand motorways? We shouldn’t be putting more cars on road anyway, but will commenting ever go back to the way it was now? No a lot more people will be working from home permanently now, so yes 'we' can undo them!
@grantshapps
@HighwaysEngland
@TransportFocus
We get so many messages like this, a lot of them asking the "which child do I grab first?" question.
Our government should not be using us an guinea pigs!
The magic SVD that was meant to be fitted as standard on all s.m before they opened (but wasn’t). Didn’t work. SVD isn’t the solution, TURNING THE FIRST LANE OFF PERMANENTLY IS. And would take less than a minute .
@grantshapps
@NationalHways
@transportgovuk
"There's only 1 thing that needs to happen & that's return of the hard shoulder in every instance.
"Even radar technology doesn't save you. If you break down in a live lane, you haven't got 17 minutes to hang on for help-that's the average response time.
"He did everything right and still lost his life': Furious widow of Derek Jacobs slams smart motorway scheme after coroner says fatal crash would not have happened 'had there been a hard shoulder"
"The whistleblower also said they've seen colleagues resign "for the sake of their mental health", some current staff "are on sick leave due to stress" and that one colleague has been vomiting at work due to the stress"
There is due to be an announcement from Government on smart Motorways this Monday.
Do you think they will announce:
Something useful, like no new All Lane Running motorways
or
More compromises that wont work!
There were 5 people in this car, youngest just 9 years old. Car developed fault in 3rd lane of motorway a lorry hit them within seconds of them stopping.
Stop risking our lives because you won't admit you've spent billions on a dangerous scheme
@grantshapps
@HighwaysEngland
Strange isn't it? but have to say it is quite emotional having you loved ones killed by a flawed system that only exists to fill the pockets of those that serve it
Smart motorways boss insists they are 'safest in world' & we’re just being emotional by raising concerns. Shockingly patronising when it’s his own staff expressing those concerns!
@MotorwaysKill
Why are we still victim blaming?? "ensure that drivers know how to use them" the driver lost power and couldn't move any further over ! then their van carrying dangerous goods was hit by another vehicle because there was no hard shoulder -
New article about yet another recent crash, this one turned into fireball & could have been catastrophic, with no place of 'safety' &no path for emergency vehicles, plus every vehicle in resulting traffic jam, put in danger
@HighwaysEngland
@grantshapps
