I taught my first lesson today! 😁 As far as first lessons go, it went pretty well! But of course lots to build and improve on. Excited for my next two tomorrow!
#EdNapierPGDE
I got some really lovely feedback on my final lesson of the day today which really ended my week on such a high. I’d love to say I’m recharging the batteries this weekend but I’m in full on dance mum mode, driving all over to classes and competitions. Happy Friday!
It’s no secret that placement is tough, especially with two young kids! But it’s so worth it when lovely feedback like this comes in. Feel like I’m making so many little improvements. Taking each day as it comes & trying not become overwhelmed 🤗
#EdNapierPGDE
The wee yin has a cracking temperature, a cough like a lifelong smoker and the greenest nose I have ever seen - not ideal on placement-eve, but so typical! An 🆘 call was placed to the mother-in-law who’s arrived to provide backup, should we need it! Typical Maw-of-2 life, this!
Equal parts excited and terrified. Can’t wait to just rip the bandaid off and get up there and teach! Been gathering resources and brainstorming ideas all weekend so I’m super excited to get started!

Sending best wishes to our fantastic
#EdNapierPGDE
students who begin their first School Experience placement tomorrow. Thanks to our partners in schools who will be supporting them for the next 7 weeks.
My P1 daughter’s 2 front teeth finally fell out at school yesterday and she was telling me how their new student teacher helped clean her up, wrap the teeth in paper towel for the tooth fairy, etc. Hats off to the primary student teachers, I could not!!!! 👏🏻
Week 2 on placement is drawing to a close. Taught 5 lessons now and my confidence is growing each time! Receiving incredible support from the wonderful English team and across the school at
@curriechs
and feeling so lucky to teach fantastic, engaged pupils. Roll on next week!
9 weeks of uni come to a close tomorrow and it’s off to placement 1 I go! I can truly say I have put everything in, have learned so much that I can’t wait to apply in a classroom context and met some fantastic people who I have loved collaborating with
@ENUTeacherEd
#EdNapierPGDE
Successfully finished my
#EdNapierPGDE
today & completed my GTCS profile, making me an official NQT! 🥳 I also found out my probation school!
So excited for what’s to come!
Final tete-a-tete with the English cohort before the holidays, working our way through critical essays with our resident expert
@missloweeng
(sorry,
@teachgratitude1
! 🤣) sharing our knowledge & texts we are familiar with ahead of placement. And pastries!
#EdNapierPGDE
Really looking forward to hearing
@Bruce_NextLevel
speak tomorrow. The Teaching Delusion 3 is one of our key texts at
@ENUTeacherEd
so it will be great to enhance some of our learning at Bruce’s session!
#EdNapierPGDE
Looking forward to presenting at the Curious Teacher Conference at
@EdinburghNapier
tomorrow.
If you’re interested in powering up your pedagogy, come and join me!
Super proud to have passed placement 1. An incredible 7 weeks! Thank you
@curriechs
for having me, it has been a pleasure to be part of your wonderful school.
Feeling super happy after my observed lesson today, beyond grateful for the positive feedback. It’s so wonderful to hear when you’re doing a good job!
#EdNapierPGDE
@ENUTeacherEd
@NUthmani
Finally, feeling very lucky to be a part of
@ENUTeacherEd
and have access to such incredible, innovative voices on our course and beyond. Choosing Napier for my PGDE continues to be my best decision!
#EdNapierPGDE
So proud of you, sis. Addiction can affect those you’d deem unlikely. I’m proud of every day she spends in recovery & every day she chooses sobriety. Rehabilitation changed her life, if you’d have told me a year ago we’d be here, I’d never have believed it. You grow, girl. 🩷
I did it, I did the maths! Something I never thought I’d manage - it was always my Achilles’ heel! Now my condition has been met, I can’t wait to start at
@ENUTeacherEd
in a few weeks!
Out of the hundreds of books I have read to my daughters over the years, this is by far the funniest. Makes me belly laugh every single time. We check it out from the library all the time. Proper good for the soul, this one. 😁
A great first day at
@curriechs
for placement. Such a lovely, engaging bunch of teachers who made me feel very welcome. Can't wait to meet the students tomorrow!
All speakers were fantastic but
@NUthmani
’s antiracism presentation will stay with me for a long time. Some of the statistics were completely mindblowing. Thank you for an engaging, eye opening seminar Nuzhat. I’m angry (in a motivational way!) & will do my part in being an ally.
An engaging, thought provoking and, dare I say, nostalgic session delivered by the incredible
@G_Armstrong21
at the
@scotlit
conference today. Blown away by his vulnerability and honesty. This message towards the end really resonated with me as an educator of young people.
I want to use my summer break to prioritise my own wellbeing and get back in a strong self-care routine.
And that begins with getting reacquainted with the squat rack. Hello auld nemesis. ☠️
Enjoyed presenting to some of my cohort yesterday the headlines of my research on such an interesting topic: what trauma-informed teaching looks like in Scottish schools at the moment and what wider literature can add to policy and practice.

@ENUTeacherEd
Nightly debrief with my 5yo, told her I was discussing love & hate in Romeo & Juliet with S3. She asked what R+J was about, then says ‘it’s just like the Smeds & the Smoos!’ dont have the heart to tell her R+J ends v differently from S&S, who have a baby & the families make up!🤣
Thoroughly enjoyed the first ‘proper’ day of my course today. Lots of thought-provoking discussion on the purpose of education, the tensions between these purposes, how they have developed over time and will continue to develop in the future.
I was telling my fellow PGDE English students about
#TheYoungTeam
today and the successes it’s enjoying being taught in schools. I hope it’s a text I get to teach one day!
Tonight, instead of her usual story, my 5-year-old wanted to read some poems before bed. We read The Dolly on The Dustcart, The Lion & Albert and From a Railway Carriage.
I got so carried a way in my dramatic reading that my other half had to come upstairs & tell me to wheesht!
A super first day observing on my serial day placement at
@QAHS_English
, a really great and super engaging team of teachers. Already looking forward to next week!
#EdNapierPGDE
That feeling when you finally submit your assessment! 🥳🙌🏻
Now to enjoy the rest of the break with the girls and start pulling all my ideas for placement together! 🧠
Such a productive day of planning today! So excited to kick this off with my S2 on Monday as well as a Commercialisation of Christmas unit with my S3! 🎅🏻
#EdNapierPGDE
@Gavin_F_Brewis
I have imposter syndrome because I’ve been conditioned to believe this. I graduated with a first in English Lit, I’m about to begin my PGDE and will be teaching in Edinburgh and being working class from Paisley I sound like Mhairi. So by these standards I can’t be an educator? 🤷🏻♀️
4 hours in the hairdressers put to good use today. Planning my Halloween lesson with S2 - very apt that we are doing gothic horror writing! Writing our myth and legend backstories then retelling them round the campfire… 👻
@NUthmani
Absolutely. This was part of the feelings I had to process. I struggled with the racial language too, it’s wholly uncomfortable. Thank you for this article - I will read now.
Reflecting on an incredible week 3 on placement & the opportunity to have had some really meaningful 1 on 1 interactions with pupils. Feel like it has rounded out my practice & the feeling of truly making a difference is incomparable. Raring to go for week 4!
#EdNapierPGDE
Another win this week. My nephew is a lovely boy who hasn’t had the easiest few years but he’s really knuckling down at school ahead of sitting his Nat 5s next year and upcoming prelims in December. This was his RUAE mark this week on last year’s Bluey paper. So beyond proud!
A lovely night with my friend and colleague Miss Lowe listening to
@HanLavery
read from her incredible new book Unwritten Woman at the wonderful
@ToppingsEdin
My 4 year old daughter Rosie was so delighted with her medal and certificate today for completing the
#Gadgeteens
summer reading challenge. We have read over 30 books together this summer! 📚
@TalesOfOneCity
My big sister 🥰 I am so beyond proud of you Em, not just for every hurdle you overcame in treatment but your devotion to helping others in Abbeycare achieve what you have.
You are finally living the life you deserve to live. Recovery is possible. 🩷
"My kids wouldn't have a mum today if it wasn't for Abbeycare."
Emma joined us in March. She has now been clean and sober for 7 months and we could not be more proud of her 👇
Came across this online and thought it was very relevant to some of the themes we have been exploring at
@ENUTeacherEd
around inclusion, equity vs equality and the poverty related attainment gap.
Does anyone have any units or resources that have worked well with S1 for Black History Month they’d be happy to share with me? Anything except a play 🥰

@Emilytest12
Congratulations Fiona for receiving your honorary doctorate today. As a mum of two daughters, hearing Emily’s story today was devastating. What incredible work you have done in turning such a tragedy in to an incredible project.
Timeline activity for S1 as we contextualise the Harlem Renaissance before moving on to look at Hughes and McKay. Asking them to discuss whether the cards are positive or negative, then try and put them in order. iPads will be allowed in the final mins to check & rearrange!
Doing a persuasive unit after Easter hols on plastic surgery/celebrities looking younger/aesthetics etc and wondering if anyone has anything already they'd be happy for me to take a look at? 😀
@EnglishScotland
Carousel cards for my superstar S1's today as we look at techniques in Claude McKay's If We Must Die. Each group will have a 5 minutes with their card before they rotate. At the end we will come together to add our findings to our technique banks!
#EdNapierPGDE
Super excited that I am off to
@curriechs
for my first placement. Looking forward to teaching in and learning from the wonderful English department there.
Great to have
@EducationScot
visit our cohort today and learn about the poverty related attainment gap. Lots of thoughtful discussion on our roles and responsibilities as future educators. This poem that
@missloweeng
shared with me was so applicable.
#EdNapierPGDE
@ENUTeacherEd
@William_J_Burke
Thanks Billy, great advice! My nephews are current Renfrew High pupils (Rory T S1 & Harris T S4) and speak very highly of you so your words are much appreciated. All the best in the new job!
Spent my Saturday in teacher Lisa mode and spending my Sunday in dance mum Lisa mode.
Up to Dundee for a competition with this wee one, we’ll just skip over the fact she was travel sick all over my car 🤦🏻♀️
BGE Fridays are my favourite! Planned an introductory lesson for a unit of work on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
Enjoyed putting the timeline starter activity together to provide historical context for the novel. Can’t wait to teach this one day!
#EdNapierPGDE
@ENUTeacherEd
Fun poetry writing workshop in uni today! We had seven minutes to write a poem about an animal, this was my attempt, not awful for such a finite amount of time! Can’t wait to get all my students writing poetry! 🫶🏻
