Thoughtful piece on antisemitism and pro-Palestine activism on university campuses. In sum: don’t automatically assume the movement or the slogans are antisemitic.
In 1941, a father reassured his son that Hitler would eventually lose. When the little Norwegian boy asked why, he said: “Because he does not know when and how to stop.” Johan Galtung grew up to become the founder of “peace studies.” This is his last book, published in 2009. 1/4

If you can’t access the book or are looking for a shorter reading, I recommend this comprehensive review article published in World Affairs by Eddie J. Girdner (2013) 4/4
Galtung takes pains to distinguish between America as a Republic and America as an Empire: “I love the US Republic where I have lived much of my life, as much as I hate the US Empire for its violence of all kinds…The book is as pro-American as it is anti-US Empire.” 3/4
Definition of “empire” (p. 20): “An empire is a trans-border, culturally legitimized, Center-Periphery structure of unequal exchange:” economically, militarily, politically, and culturally. “The US Empire ranks highly on all four.”
There are problems with comparing the American Empire to Hitler, admits Galtung, in the book’s prologue. But no comparison is ever complete or perfect, only helpful: “the basic logic is the same.” 2/4

I was in a session with a US state dept official who got too comfortable with the audience. After saying Russia is really good at disinformation, he paused, smirked, and whispered: “Don’t tell anyone, but they’re almost as good as we are.” It was an open forum. True story!

Drawing your attention to this important conversation with leading UChicago scholar Robert Pape. He agrees that Israel’s foreign policy is even destructive for its own vital interests. Highly recommended
“Israel is setting itself up for an unwinnable situation.”
Pape argues: Indiscriminate bombing campaigns fail b/c they mobilize population, fuel insurgency. Horton asks: What if goal is ethnic cleansing, nobody left to worry about? Brilliant and essential dialogue. 🧵 1/5

I agree about speech (for the most part). Problem is he’s been at it 50 yrs. Didn’t he write the tax code? I worry it’s a game for him. “Finish the job” means “win the game,” i.e. end career at term limit. With Republican Congress he can say whatever. No real change possible.
Israel has impeccable timing 🎄 On Christmas Day, Netanyahu publicly says the plan to expel Gazans is in the works, while The Jerusalem Post drops an op-ed explaining why it’s good for them. 🧵

By that logic, Hamas blames its armed resistance on the siege & occupation, so should we blame Israel for Oct 7? The answer is no. Each side is morally culpable for its moral failures and will be held accountable accordingly.
There are moments in history when “the man” makes all the difference. Now is one of those times. For every hour the ceasefire is delayed, people are maimed, dismembered, or breathe their last. An eternity. 2/2
As ICJ begins proceedings in the case of South Africa vs Israel, American media replaying Ingraham Angle and Republican Primary debate coverage across Fox, CNN, and MSNBC. The insularity and my myopia should alarm people who care about the future of this country.
“Do you condemn Hamas?”
This piece by leading Israeli historian Avi Shlaim articulates why it has been difficult to answer this question.
Worth reading in its entirety, I’m clipping the parts relevant to the Hamas question 🧵 1/6

Israel is on the brink of strategic defeat 🧵 On Dec 2 Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Israel is headed for “strategic defeat” if it fails to protect the civilian population of Gaza. It has failed. Other leading voices are joining the chorus 1/7

The balance of power has shifted. And—dare I say it—the Houthis occupy the moral high ground by rallying for a ceasefire, which is the position of almost every country and human rights org on the planet!

Yes, but according to Hersh’s account Norway was fully complicit. Which makes it more of an act of self-sabotage or red flag operation than an act of war.
It is easy to condemn the terrorist acts of Hamas, just like it is easy to condemn any crime against humanity. A categorical “Do you condemn Hamas?”, however, requires the erasure of history, reduces the present moment into an absurd abstraction, and tees up ethnic cleansing. 6/6

They already succeeded in providing cover for the war in real time. Mission accomplished. I can’t believe these are innocent mistakes. This is ideological and deliberate. No apology can make up for it.
These are the last lines of the preface from Samantha Power’s Pulitzer Prize winning book, “A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide,” which we read in our class:
Today, I convened donor governments to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. We spoke about the urgent need for civilians in Gaza to have access to continued assistance and the need for Israel to take every possible measure to protect civilian life.

Serious question: Is there any—and if so, how much—overlap between the anti-China lobby and pro-Israel lobby in the US? Or are these largely independent and minimally intersecting camps that just happen to, at times, overlap?
Why are people calling for a ceasefire not instead demanding a release of the hostages? If Hamas just surrenders, this could all be over! These objections totally miss the forest for the trees. 🧵
If a criminal takes hostages and the police start shooting indiscriminately…1/8
Here’s what I got. By ethnic cleansing Gazans into Sinai, three things will happen:
First, West Bank will read the tea leaves and assume they’re next. After all, the real prize is Judea and Samaria. So expect desperate campaign of resistance (suicide terrorism) 2/5

Incredible statement from the lawyer who succeeded at the ICJ advocating on behalf of Bosnia w/ respect to genocide: South Africa will win its case, US will be found complicit, and it will all happen this month.
He also says the ICC is impotent, beholden to Western backers 👇🏼
South Africa has filed a case at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. International law expert Francis Boyle, who has argued successfully at the ICJ, says he believes "South Africa will win an order against Israel."
