I’m kind of attracted to that kind of church if it exists. I’m tired of the malignant nationalism and tribalism that has infected the Eastern churches and increasingly the West too.

It’s a hard task to require the faithful to attend Mass so that they can be told that loving one’s country and its citizens is a wicked sin. That’s a recipe for ecclesiastical suicide.

The concept of ordo amoris is of Stoic origin, not Christian. It may have been appropriated by Christian thinkers or derived from the natural law (which the Stoics discovered too). But even in Stoicism, there is a call to subvert that order, as this passage in Hierocles shows.

February 11 is the memorial of Our Lady of #Lourdes. Several years ago I read for the first Franz Werfel's novel The Song of Bernadette, a moving account of the visions and miracles. It will have a prominent role in my next book on the Marian works of St Gregory of Narek

I've come to the conclusion that people in politics don't believe they are going to die. In addition to term limits, there should be age limits too. 75 seems to me a reasonable maximum age.

While respecting the positive effects of nations, Christians should be wary of nationalism and its destructive effects and distortions of the natural order of love.

I was reading a proposal the other day from the great Jesuit priest and scholar Father Robert Taft that Orthodox and Catholics mutually recognize all of each other’s saints. I concur. These sorts of initiatives would work miracles to bring us closer together in love.

I first read The Cheese and the Worms as an undergrad for a history course @JohnsHopkins many many years ago. Happy to see it get much deserved attention on my favorite podcast!

An unusual episode today, as we consider the methodology used by Carlo Ginzburg in his pioneering work of "micro-history," The Cheese and the Worms, on how a 16th Italian peasant became a self-taught philosopher.

@AuriliaEmilio Good morning (or afternoon!), my friend! “u” is the transliteration of the diphthong ու according to the Library of Congress Romanization of the Armenian alphabet.
