One of the final projects that I signed off as a @HackneyCouncil Cabinet Member was to restore our heritage street signs in Stoke Newington. Thank you to Cllrs @HackneySpeaker & @RichardLufkin, and our very own @HistoryOfStokey for pitching the idea 👊🏼✌🏾
A few months after the council restored four 1930s heritage street signs following my long campaign, it was great to meet in Dynevor Road at the site of one of those signs with the three people who supported my effort and made it all happen: @hackneyspeaker and the council’s heritage champion, Cllr Sheila Suso-Runge (@susorunge), Cllr @RichardLufkin, and former local councillor and current Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, Mete Coban (@metecoban92). Of the 13 heritage street signs I identified for restoration due to discolouration, four have now been restored (Belgrade Road, Stoke Newington High Street, Green Lanes and Dynevor Road). These are rare signs from the 1930s and 1950s that bear the name of the former Borough of Stoke Newington. There is good momentum and encouraging willingness from the council to see this important restoration project through, and I’m hopeful that more signs can be ticked off the list this year.
