Also, a strange dissonance emerges if one moment you’re hearing about a neighbor being abducted for his political beliefs, and the next, you’re scrolling past a meme torching the mighty establishment. It was absurd. But then I’d see my supra-specialist professor whispering in worry just like the tea vendor at the corner shop. And I could see that this was probably the first time we weren’t in a chaos. This was coherence. A silent, unstructured, yet undeniable consensus: this is too much. We’re done. I remember the election day. It still is the most moving, politically cohesive experience of my life. As if we had become a village again, where the unarmed many stood together against the armed few. And anyone who was out that day knew that we didn’t need academic jargon to make sense of what was happening. Cities upon cities were falling. On the way back, an old man stopped our car and asked, “Did we win?” He didn’t name a party. He didn’t have to. That day, if a civilian was asking another civilian this question, there was only one possible meaning of winning: did “they” lose? And they did. They lost so completely, so undeniably, that even if history drags its feet and keeps them propped up for a few more years, one thing is certain, the chapter where we couldn’t decide for ourselves has ended. And this last page we’re still in? It has an exclamation mark at its end.
