@ItIsHoeMath I think married people should have equal access to money absent gambling and reckless spending issues. SAHMs can’t be financial prisoners.

@wil_da_beast630 Banning porn is rather like banning first trimester abortion - the ban creates new problems that are worse than the banned thing. As a parent, however, I want porn locked down so that 6 year olds don’t stumble upon it when looking for funny cat videos.

Parents shouldn’t force a vegan diet on pre-pubescent children. No competent doctor or nutritionist would tell you a vegan diet is at all healthy for kids. For development, the ideal would be omnivore until puberty, vegetarian through puberty and vegan post puberty. A vegan diet is not ideal for adults. The healthiest is probably pescatarian with no dairy. These are just facts, and parents should also consider the social aspects of never allowing their kid to have a slice of pizza or cake at a birthday party. Your child is going to, quite justifiably, hate you if you constantly tell them they can never have what other children are having. If you don’t want your kids sneaking hotdogs and chicken nuggets it’s best to just explain your choice, introduce age appropriate information about how food animals are treated and guide them to making reasonable decisions based on that information. The most basic role of a parent is to teach, not to dictate.

In late 2008 / early 2009 I watched thousands of my investment banking colleagues lose their jobs, almost all of which had nothing to do with the subprime lending crisis. People cheered for that too, with the only difference being that absolutely was no one was saying “poor investment bank employees. They don’t deserve this.”

Vegan of more than 25 years here. You’re aware that very few people hunt and kill their own food, and that most of the meat wrapped in plastic and styrofoam at the grocery store was treated barbarically while alive. Please don’t act as though that doesn’t matter - it does. If I had a pet lactating cow and egg laying chicken that I took care of and treated nicely I would drink the milk and eat the eggs because I am a rationale person and my moral objection to doing so would be completely removed. But I don’t and have no interest in having those particular pets. I still wouldn’t slaughter and eat my pets because as an apex predator with other food options I can show mercy and just choose to eat something else. I cook meat for my omnivorous husband and children, but I source it from farms that actually treat animals decently while they’re alive. I’ll also point out that I’m not a leftist and don’t concern myself with what others eat because I can hold beliefs that I don’t attempt to force down the throats of everyone around me.

My immediate family is not vegan, and I do almost all of the cooking. I have been vegan since well before my children were born. This is me not forcing my lifestyle choices on my children, even when they’re based solidly on morality. If I took a different position I can guarantee you the kids would be running to McDonald’s every chance they had. This removes it as a point of rebellion and makes them actually care where their food comes from.

@veganrecipebowl @mmabets808 @romialien @poojavnair A rational vegan understands that no one is going to stop eating meat simply because you want them to. What you can do is help guide people to farms where the animals are treated humanely and raised sustainably. Accepting the world as it is does not compromise your ethics.

@veganrecipebowl @romialien @poojavnair I’m a vegan for ethical reasons, and I prepare meat for my family. I will only prepare wild caught seafood and humanely raised meat, but it is not my place to force my husband and children into veganism.

Regarding your first point, can’t you derive the payment categorization code from the system that sent the request to Treasury? Assuming there aren’t 20k data entry clerks sitting typing these requests in manually, you know where they come from. Why can’t you just look at all the feeds coming in from all of the different systems that provide requests and just run them all into a normalization layer that rejects any request that doesn’t have XYZ field populated. I assume this is child’s play for many on your team and can be done quickly. Just kick it back. Bad data isn’t treasury’s problem to solve, it’s the problem of the system requesting the payment. You can audit this in the same way. I don’t want to hear that this is almost impossible to audit - it isn’t.

Switzerland is pretty great at this too, and access to OTC stuff is also restricted by pharmacists. You can’t get ibuprofen without discussing your symptoms with a pharmacist. Melatonin requires a prescription. The first questions your doctor asks are about diet, sleep, physical activity, stress, hydration and sunlight.

I have been vegan (except for honey) for more than 25 years. It can be challenging to get enough protein, especially if your family eats meat and you end up eating a lot of dinners that are a protein, carb and vegetable. Here is what I do: 1) make a big lentil salad every week so you have it around. I use French green lentils cooked in low sodium veggie stock and well drained. I add chopped up carrots, bell peppers, scallions and sometimes tomatoes and leafy greens. For a dressing, I mix Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper. 2) I snack on salted almonds, peanut butter and keep frozen edamame around. You can quickly boil the edamame, strain and salt for a quick source of protein. 3) I buy the vacuum packed, low moisture tofu, cut it into small pieces, toss it with a bit of flour, salt, pepper and whatever other spices I am in the mood for and pan fry it in olive oil until it’s lightly browned and crispy. 4) I keep high protein vegan yogurt around for when I’m desperate. Most vegan yogurt is very low protein and high sugar so you need to check the labels carefully. 5) Whole oats and a number of other whole grains are actually good sources of protein. Overnight oats with the high protein vegan yogurt are delicious and satisfying and baked oatmeal is also a great option if you prefer a different texture. These are simple, but for people who are good cooks I suggest making your own falafel and hummus (you can increase the protein by using both edamame and chickpeas). Vegan chili with black beans, red lentil soup with coconut milk and spinach is delicious and quick to make, but what I would never recommend is attempting to use fake meat or cheese as protein. It’s a bunch of highly processed low nutrient garbage.

I made cupcakes with nutella butter cream which were very popular with my husband and children and your mom should try it. Here’s how I made the Nutella butter cream: 1) whip 14 tablespoons of room temperature unsalted butter with a hand mixer, gradually adding 1 1/4 cups of powdered or superfine sugar until light and fluffy 2) whip in 3/4 of a cup of Nutella until well incorporated with the butter and sugar 3) add half a cup of heavy cream, a teaspoon or two of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Whip until the cream is well incorporated and fluffy. I put this on vanilla cupcakes but I’m sure it would work well on chocolate ones too. Or for cookie sandwiches!

I made cupcakes with Nutella buttercream frosting tonight, and I’m curious if @travelingenes was advocating for banning any of the following items: Butter Cream Sugar Eggs Flour Milk Olive oil Baking powder Vanilla Salt Nutella (ok, this one’s a little suspicious) If not, nothing is preventing someone from making a treat for their child or themselves. It just requires enough effort that it remains an occasional treat rather than something that’s eaten every day.

@jimiuorio I’m not suggesting a replacement. Someone like him should serve as Congressional oversight for what the executive branch is doing. This shouldn’t be controversial and should shut up those in congress shrieking about the lack of oversight.

Skilled oversight from someone familiar with payments, fraud, money laundering, etc would go a long way to legitimizing this whole process for the average American. And it wouldn’t hurt if Elon stopped all the shit-posting related to DOGE. Do this in a way that 80% of people accept the results and all but the craziest democrats stop screeching.
