My mom went to drop off her mail at the mailbox she’s used for *decades* and found the site blocked off. The mailboxes are being ripped out. She’s 85. This is how she pays her bills. She knows this is deliberate. Santa Barbara, California.
Just heard my husband on the phone with a relative, talking about our snowbound lockdown. “Yeah, it’s basically The Shining.”
If I hear him typing, I’m getting the fire ax.
All my life I’ve wanted to write. Somehow, some way. So I wrote at night while teaching. I wrote while my babies napped. I wrote on planes, trains & in cars. I wrote more than a dozen novels. This week my latest, HEAT 2, debuted at

I appreciate everyone who's expressed concern for my mom. She's okay. She can take care of herself. But she's angry and frustrated, as am I. That's why I want to highlight what's happening.

I'm crying. This message just knocked me flat. Your support and enthusiasm convinced American publishers to take a look at my writing. You helped make this moment possible. And THAT is a beautiful thing. Thank you!!!
I've been sworn to secrecy but can now shout the news:

Using an apostrophe to pluralize last names. The Gardiner’s. The Segura’s. The Jones’s, once, and God help me, I almost took a flamethrower to that Christmas letter.

Texas Republicans have asked a federal judge to throw out 100,000 ballots in Harris County cast through curbside voting. They drew Judge Andrew Hanen, one of the most notoriously partisan Republican judges in the entire federal judiciary. This is alarming.
First off: We're OK. But we had a major fire. Thanks to superb firefighters, our house is still standing. Thanks to amazing neighbors, Paul saved irreplaceable photos. I was out of town & when he phoned, the last thing I wanted to hear was sirens. But he's safe, & we'll rebuild.
I’d been saving exciting news for my friends and family: My daughter, Kate, is scheduled to be on Jeopardy this Thursday. She taped the show in early September. I’m so proud of her, and so glad she got to meet Alex Trebek.

Gotta give props to Randall Flagg, from THE STAND. Sexy, charismatic, and supernaturally, homicidally evil. I read the novel in college and even today, if I hear cowboy boots scuffing along the pavement, I get chills and look over my shoulder.

It is with deep sadness we say goodbye to the "Queen of Suspense" Mary Higgins Clark, author of over 40 bestselling suspense titles. She passed away peacefully this evening, January 31, at the age of 92 surrounded by family and friends.
Things I loved about writing HEAT 2 with
@michaelmann
: 1/ the research. We were writing about cops and robbers, so we rode out with LA cops and talked about tunnel heists with a bank robber.
GOP House candidate refers to “the so-called plane that crashed into the Pentagon. Odd there’s never any evidence shown for a plane in the Pentagon.”
This is insane. And of course patently false.
Let’s face it: Today was the second terrorist attack in the last week. Kids were gunned down Sunday in Gilroy; back-to-school shoppers today in El Paso. We have to recognize it, fight it, and root it the f*ck out.
Remember all those smash-and-grab videos of store theft? Now meet the suburban housewife and her husband behind an $8 million nationwide shoplifting ring. 😏
Hey, adults belittling Douglas High School students: What the everloving hell is wrong with you? Disagree with them if you want. But to laugh and denigrate kids who survived a massacre? Beyond shameful.
EDGAR SURVIVED!! I found him in a box of books salvaged after the fire. An Edgar Allan Poe statue that literally emerged from the flames and smoke… I love the little guy even more now.
New York City! Wow wow… if you spot this billboard near the Port Authority for THE DARK CORNERS OF THE NIGHT, let me know. (The novel is coming Feb. 18!)
Years ago, a friend pulled me aside and said, “Promise that one day you’ll stop wasting your talent on crime fiction, and write a real book.”
Postscript: novel no. 15 coming 2/18/20

Writing has ups and downs. There’s work, & tears, & hustle, & luck, & tearing your hair out, and, sometimes, euphoria. If you love it like I do, you keep going.

When I was first published (in this millennium!) the publisher didn't do electronic edits. My first five novels were edited on the hard copy. And yes, the publisher had a department dedicated to retyping every manuscript before sending it to production.
Chuck Palahniuk still sends his agent and editor **the boxed paper copy of a completed manuscript.**
I'm not even sure how this editing process would work. Surely at some point they must demand an electronic copy. Otherwise they'd need to pay someone to retype the whole thing.
