When I was involved in student activism, one of the (many) faults of our movement was an undisciplined impulse to react to every provocation, reacting to everything with panicked urgency. This level headed refusal to take the bait is so refreshing and impressive.

The government *told* people to return to work and *asked* them not to use public transport to get there. There's no alternative transport provision. The government knew what that meant, workers knew what it meant and journalists knew what it meant; do we need this faux surprise?

If you're going to make a principled argument against the death penalty (which it seems in the coming weeks and months we will have to) the principle needs to be that the state shouldn't kill people even if they are guilty of breaking its laws, not that some people are innocent.

Have not had a strong motivation to vote in this election because I live in a safe seat so it feels like a pointless act, but I've now discovered a pressing local issue very dear to my heart that I feel might be worth it, which is making the Liberal Democrats lose their deposit.

When your read that the prison population is "projected to rise by a further 20,000 by 2026", you might assume that that protection is based on some analysis of crime rates or sentencing patterns, not just the fact that they're building that many new places and plan to fill them.

There are around 80,000 prisoners in England and Wales – but most people will never go into one of the 117 jails

Call me a liberal but I think the right to peacefully set fire to police vans is an essential foundation of any democracy and should be defended.

I'm not claiming to be an expert but I think I've spent an above average amount of time and effort trying to understand the ideology of the gender critical feminist movement and I cannot even begin to fathom what grievance she's pretending to have here.

So where does this infant (who "takes they/them pronouns" parents are told) come from? Where are its parents? Did it hatch from an egg or was it born from a mama? Who looks after its interests? Ask these questions and you get the usual "you are obsessing about genitals".

Keep seeing the "if men could get pregnant abortions would be freely available" meme shared by people who spend a good chunk of their time and energy attacking men who can pregnant.

'Essential' is not an objective category of work, travel, purchase, business, or excercise. One question might be, 'essential for what?' Human survival? The long-term stability of the capitalist economy? The immediate maintenance of order and the rule of law? Spiritual welbeing?

When people say "white working class" they either mean "white" and are trying to obscure the social power of that position through the implicit association with poverty or they mean "working class" in which case they shouldn't be excluding people who aren't white. Both are racist
