Our paper is out in time for #EM_Monday! It is about a specialized neuron-specific ER, the spine apparatus, that is close to synapses and has a peculiar shape. If you think neurons are special, the spine apparatus is their🦄horn! But how does it form?!(1/9)

A trove of insights! I found an ArgPro dicodon exactly where we’d predict to drive pausing in Cdc12, the septin we think is slowly translated, in a loop where the α2 helix would be exiting the ribosome & closing the α-β sandwich where other Frydman lab data showed chaperones bind

@UCSDCooperLab A little out of my field, but I think it’s great. Made me think about trying to teach the basics of heredity/genetics to elementary students in an outreach program: trying not to oversimplify how a giraffe differs from an okapi, and glossing over the genetics of detached earlobes
