Let's talk about reticulated foam because I'm a nerd. Reticulated foam is often used for fish tank filters but I love using it for fursuit head padding! Unlike upholstery foam, it's open cell - so air passes straight through it. This means it's cooler to wear and faster to dry

I figured out how to manipulate the fur direction in a permanent way so the highland bull I'm making can have that lil star that all the fur grows outwards from in the middle of his nose 😍. Sample piece was washed and then dried with a hair dryer and the direction still stays!

My favourite detail on Kovu is this barely there gradient on the yellow of his eye, and the teeny tiny drop shadow under the white highlight. It's so subtle but it makes that triangle look like a separate piece when really it's all one hand cut piece of sublimation dyed plastic

The other half of the equation is spacer mesh fabric. Spacer mesh is, well, two layers of mesh with space in between! That space is created by tiny fibers, which makes the whole thing super well ventilated, as well as adding some additional squish

My goal when I designed my fursuit head padding was to create removable padding that you could wash in the sink at a con, wring it out, and have it be dry and ready to wear again by morning, and reticulated foam has been a big part of that.

A technique I've adopted from my other job where we pattern wheelchair seats: using this foam that's made for under vinyl flooring (or thin packing foam, same stuff) to pattern! . It has just a little bit of stretch like fabric does, so it follows the contours really well

The spacer mesh I use has a soft side, so it's nice and comfortable against skin, and I line the whole head with it, as well as the removable head padding.

I'm really happy with how the removable snakebites turned out! . I wanted to find a way to attach them that let you take them off without leaving a trace, and I feel like it totally worked

One thing I've started doing with TPU bases is printing a skin only on the lip area, so that when you stretch your thinner mouth lining fabric over those edges it looks nice and smooth rather than following every bump of the edge

Almost happy with this guy! . He's not the same as my Kovu - Kovu will always be a unique one off (partly bc his signature smirk made patterning take twice as long since the pieces couldn't be mirrored😭), but he's in a similar style & will be available as a TPU head base soon!

As someone who comes from prop making, I'm still just blown away by the idea that someone is going to keep and cherish something that I pour my effort and creativity into, rather than it going straight in the trash once it's no longer needed 💜.
I can't wait for this suit to be purchased and then never seen at a con 😞.

Designing Kovu's eye mesh today! They're going to be sublimation printed (which is definitely not a thing I do to avoid painting /s). If anyone has any critique I'm totally open to it, drawing the eyes is by far the part I'm the least confident in 😅 . #fursuit #fursuitmaker

I can't decide if Kovu should have five or four fingered handpaws 😭 . If I did four fingers I could add a little dew claw nub that's purely decorative, and it would maybe be more accurate?? I keep going back and forth . (Art is from TLK2 ref sheet, found by @r0wdyrumble )

Another feature I'm testing: the ears are securely fused to the headbase at the front two points but not at the back, allowing them to be folded forwards for transport. Once you're ready to suit up, pull the strap that'll velcro inside the lining to pull the ears back into place!

I played around with my Kovu sculpt to make it symmetrical and a bit more adaptable to different expressions (vs Kovu's built in smirk), and I'm thinking I might start selling some TPU printed bases if there's any interest 👀

Smøøth . This is why I love printing with ABS, going from raw print to this takes like 5 minutes - a quick wipe with a paper towel soaked in acetone to blend the print lines, and then a little bit of sanding to make things smooth and matte

Before and after of kovu face 2.0:. You can't really see any of the worst spots in pictures, but version 1 I spent so long trying to smooth out the shave that it just got shorter and shorter until some areas on the cheek were almost like velvet. Oops! V2 is so much nicer

Plus the antlers are magnetic! (and make such a satisfying sound when they click into place 😍). I used my 3d pen to connect the TPU head base to the ABS antler base, so they're completely fused and the antlers are extremely secure and stable

One trick I like doing when I'm almost done sculpting a head in zbrush is using the inflate tool to deinflate the sculpt just a little bit

Basically I figured out that if I add these mesh pillows filled with reticulated foam and sew them on only at the top corner, I can have that disney volume and swoop but it still moves around

@MonoyashaDvC Oh man I can imagine it making a massive difference in body padding for full suits! For my frog lady cosplay last year I didn't have time to source any and used regular upholstery foam for the torso padding, and it was SO warm to wear.

Okay I really really want to make a panther with this sculpt I just finished, so I'm opening up one commission slot for a fursuit using this base!. Head only for £2⃣5⃣0⃣0⃣or mini partial for £3⃣0⃣0⃣0⃣, with completion in Spring 2025. I'm also open to any other non maned big cats!

@SuitFurself Reticulated foam is made of polyurethane, just like upholstery foam, and the degradation and risk of mould is the same. It requires care to keep clean, but no more than other fursuit making materials. It's actually been used for a long time in the puppet making industry!.

I was super unhappy with the head base sculpt on the highland bull premade I was like halfway finished making, so obviously I decided to start over from scratch. But omg look how good he looks noww I'm so glad I decided to rework the sculpt 😍

I've spent months working on things that get binned after one installation or event, made theatre props that ultimately got cut from the show, props that were only needed for one shoot. The concept of someone Keeping my work is so so special to me, whether they share it or not.

Accidentally shaved the fur a bit too short on Kovu's face so now he's getting a brand new one, which hopefully I won't mess up this time! . It sucks but oh well, mistakes happen when you're new and I'd rather remake the face than sell something I'm not happy with

@SuitFurself If you look up "puppet foam" you'll find listings for reticulated foam, and I'm fairly certain the Muppets are actually made of it.

@auzutea Thanks!! It's 3d printed in TPU with infill only (with a couple spots built up with foam because I decided the eyebrows needed editing), so it's flexible and breathable! It's lined with spacer mesh, and there's removable padding 😊
