Polls in DC are now closed. Thanks to all the neighbors in 6B09 who shared their thoughts and priorities during this campaign as well as all the Commissioners—past, present, and future—who supported me along the way. I look forward to serving with many of you in January. Onward!
I’ve asked non-DC friends if their cities have the same fake tag issue and they look at me like I have three heads. This is the kind of no-nonsense baseline traffic enforcement legislation all responsible road users should support.
Inbox:
@BrianneKNadeau
has introduced a bill that would allow D.C. to more easily tow and impound cars with fake or long-expired tags. Currently, a car needs to have a certain number of tickets before it is towed.
Historical Congressional Cemetery has repeatedly asked
@DCPoliceDept
to prevent the J6 protestors from damaging the brick wall and throwing things onto their property. Unfortunately, once again we are seeing the results of inaction.

. As an ANC, I need leaders is to be responsive when I share neighbors' requests, anger, and frustration. When I've organized safety walks with MPD and community meetings in the wake of violence,
@charlesallen
has shown up and answered every tough question.
Good morning, there are understandably some nerves and frustration as neighbors prepare to commute and take their kids to school this morning. I'll be outside the Potomac Ave. Metro at 8:30 if you are would like to discuss solutions or just want to vent for a few minutes.
Literally anything would be better than the status quo at RFK but holding up development to try to attract a football team - especially this football team - is an insult to everyone getting priced out of DC housing.
Friendly reminder that this disappointing USWNT run still equals Alexi Lalas’ greatest career achievement and Fox could put literally anyone else as an upgrade on their coverage.
Texted with a neighbor who was at Trusty's today when it, Manny and Olga's, and Hilly East Burger were struck with bullets from a shooting at the nearby bus stop. I'm glad his family is ok but share the frustration with another shooting in the area that will likely go unsolved.
Some really interesting
@wmata
#BetterBus
numbers: 74% of DMV residents live within a 5-minute walk of a bus stop but only 22% have access to high-frequency service.
Fundraising updates for D.C.'s mayoral race (Dec. 11-Jan. 31):
-
@MayorBowser
raised $43k; with public funds, she now has $2.4 million cash on hand.
-
@RobertWhite_DC
raised $47k; with public funds, he has $555,000 cash on hand.
So a “night mayor” can actually be a really important job and requires some planning, regulatory, or hospitality experience. If this is the type of appointment we’ll see in a third Bowser term, that’s not encouraging.
Inbox:
@CMCharlesAllen
has introduced a new bill to combat dangerous driving including enhanced booting, towing, and impounding of offenders’ vehicles, new authority for the
@DCAttorneyGen
to bring civil suits against drivers, and stronger license revocation for repeat DUIs.
Penn Ave SE update from
@DDOTDC
: bus lane markings currently being installed, bike lane barrier starts next week, no parking in bus lane or curb lane while crews are marking. Expected completion by end of May.
I support D.C. Statehood and home-rule – but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the Mayor’s objections – such as lowering penalties for carjackings.
If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did – I’ll sign it.
.
@311DCgov
@DCDPW
Please tow this abandoned bus that is parked on the 500 block of Virginia Ave SE (N of 695). Tag expired in June, door padlocked from outside.
I’ll continue to work with
@charlesallen
, MPD, the Mayor’s team and all stakeholders on short and long-term solutions here. But underpinning this is also our national failure in guns which is absolutely infuriating.
This neighborhood has seen 4 unrelated shootings in the last 90 days. I’ve met with neighbors &
@MattLaFortune
in living rooms to outline plans of action & we need the city to work with urgency. There are too many damn guns and neighbors are rightly outraged.
The RFK site can be so much more for the surrounding community with additional mixed use development and recreation than a 60,000 seat stadium with surface parking for 8 major events a year.
"D.C. Councilmember Vincent Gray, who represents the neighborhood surrounding the RFK site, said [...] any decision should be made with the neighborhood’s best interests at heart."
1. 20% is a number you just made up. 2. Only defending Statehood/Home Rule when politically convenient undermines the cause, rather than strengthening it. Do your job.
@ANCJosh
I have worked hard for 16 years to make statehood a reality. With advocates & our Delegate we have gotten DC statehood passed in the House twice now with almost unanimous support from Dems. In one fell swoop the Council just managed to alienate 20% of the people who supported us.
The Clear Lanes program is a good step forward but is creating some confusion around who is responsible for enforcing parking violations in bus lanes. We need the ability for neighbors to report ongoing violations.
One related problem, with
@311DCgov
: When I called about this car, the 311 request went to
@DCDPW
. But
@DCDPW
closed the request w/o action, saying you're responsible. But no one knows how to alert you. I spoke with
@DCDPW
and they say they have no idea who to contact at
@wmata
.
This afternoon,
@DDOTDC
released an NOI to improve safety on 17th St SE between Potomac Ave and Barney Circle with a new protected bike lane, pedestrian median refuges, and a reduction in travel lane width from 10’ to 11’.
@Noahpinion
Also I realize this is beside the point, but there is a lot more “voting democracy” than just every four years. If you want to vote for your county coroner, hoo boy we’ve got you covered.
Speaking of
@DDOTDC
, I was just notified that they have completed a Traffic Safety Investigation and plan to install two speed humps on the 900 block of 14th St. SE (outside the Roost). Small victories!
In March 2019, early in my first term, I was proud to support an
@ErinPalmerDC
resolution condemning the corruption of Jack Evans, long before the Council acted. The rehabilitation of this breach of public trust by multiple Council members is a step backward for all of us.
101 pages into this 142 page document is a huge development for 6B09... permanent traffic calming infrastructure is coming to Potomac/Kentucky! This is the
#1
request I heard from neighbors collecting petition signatures last summer.
DDOT is launching a Vision Zero Hardening program in FY23, which will convert tactical traffic calming measures (e.g., flexposts) into permanent measures (e.g., concrete) at 8 intersections, including 6th & O St NW
On Wednesday, I’m picking up ballot access petitions to run for ANC. Parts of 6B09 have been represented well by
@coreyholman
,
@EdwardRyder
, and
@Alison6B09
before redistricting and I hope to carry on their hard work and commitment to safer streets.
Candidates in the upcoming election are now listed on OpenANC! 8 people have already said they're running in 2022, only 2 of whom have previously served on ANCs.
In order to be listed early on OpenANC, you can fill out this form:
Disappointed with
@DMEforDC
’s decision not to make Potomac Ave. a Safe Passages site immediately. Hill East students and kids from across DC who attend our five nearby elementary schools deserve better.
Ahead of Tuesday, a quick note of appreciation for every candidate, volunteer, and staffer who has poured their time and energy into campaigns this past year. Your vacation is just around the corner.
New op-ed from me in
@washingtonpost
.
Summary:
@JoeBiden
's career has been defined by his leftward evolution and building consensus within the party. Reflecting the endorsements of Sanders and Warren, he'll be the most progressive president of our time.
The JUFJ Campaign Fund is proud to endorse
@RobertWhite_DC
for Mayor! He is an experienced leader with the vision and political will to make important transformative change in our city. Read more here:
The allegations in this report are significant and infuriating. While the individual allegations against Falcicchio have been substantiated and may deserve further legal action, I’d also like to see further investigation into what was tolerated at EOM.
#BreakingNews
DC Mayor Bowser's chief of staff/deputy mayor John Falcicchio "made unwelcome, physical sexual advances" -including exposing himself- says report by the mayor's legal counsel. It's dumped on a holiday weekend, doesn't even name him.
@wcp
Like any ANC commissioner, I have *opinions* about different parts of the DC government but the MOCRS are pretty universally active and helpful as an initial contact to flag an issue or neighborhood priority.
Democrats in DC should direct their time, talent, and treasure to national candidates who won’t vote to undermine Home Rule.
#NoDonationWithoutRepresentation
🚨🚨 MORE BREAKING: The House of Representatives has PASSED a "Joint Resolution of Disapproval" targeting DC's 'Revised Criminal Code Act' which addresses criminal penalties and jury trials.
The vote was 219-173
31 Democrats crossed over and voted 'Yes'.
@wusa9
Very excited to see this.
@RobertWhite_DC
has worked to address the inequities in our schools and housing as a Councilmember. As Mayor, he will fight for all DC residents.
Recalling one Councilmember won't make us safer. It'll take away Ward 6's representation for months and shift the blame from the Mayor, USAO, and others who are letting us down on a daily basis.
Frigid Saturday… a good time to sleep in, stay indoors, or as I was told
@DCDoughnut
this morning, “You’re my first customer every weekend! When I see you standing outside, I know it’s time to open.”
Tomorrow marks one year following the tragic shooting at Potomac Ave. Its a reminder of Mr. Cunningham's career of service to Metro riders as well as the senseless gun violence that continues to plague our community.
First time seeing the new
@DDOTDC
traffic flow for 14th St. by Safeway. The good: one-way like other blocks, protected bike lane, (slightly) safer intersection at D and Potomac. The bad: multiple cars still trying to make the now-illegal turn to the parking garage.
Finally had a chance to grab brunch at
@CrazyAuntHelens
. Shrimp & grits were great. Nice to see
@PeteButtigieg
there supporting a restaurant in 6B too!
Deeply disappointed that
@MayorBowser
's team
@DCMOCRS
just skipped the ANC 4B meeting tonight. Multiple Commissioners had questions on various topics and expressed their disappointment. First skip we've ever had - feels deliberate given the news.
Permit was issued Friday to convert the intersection of Pennsylvania and Potomac avenues SE into a signalized elliptical traffic circle, with a park inside the circle.
Following this shooting on Sunday and a further incident last night near the Roost, MPD is increasing patrols and will be deploying the Crime Suppression Team to the area for violent crime reduction patrols. MPD is asking neighbors to share any video or information you may have.
Texted with a neighbor who was at Trusty's today when it, Manny and Olga's, and Hilly East Burger were struck with bullets from a shooting at the nearby bus stop. I'm glad his family is ok but share the frustration with another shooting in the area that will likely go unsolved.
For the Mayor, “nimble” means caving to right-wing protestors instead of listening to her top epidemiologist and constituents. DC deserves better leadership.
A lot of COVID protocols ending: DC's vaccine requirement on businesses, mask mandate (see below), and firehouse covid testing.
@TheArtist_MBS
asks if these moves are premature because covid is unpredictable.
Mayor Bowser: "It's not. We have to be nimble if something changes."
These are much-needed safety improvements for our neighborhood. I will urge DDOT to move swiftly to complete these projects and then turn their attention to Potomac & Kentucky.
DDOT has shared 2 upcoming plans in
#Ward6
to remove plastic pylons & make permanent needed curb & crosswalk extensions / bike protections. Result will be much safer pedestrian crossings in the neighborhood! I’ve pushed for these conversions if we’re ever going make VZ a reality.
I’ve reached out to
@DCPoliceDept
about tonight’s “block party.” Since it is considered a First Amendment activity, no permit is required but they will have an increased presence tonight to ensure the safety of the public.
NEW: Historic Congressional Cemetery in Washington is closing tonight "out of an abundance of caution"........... due to a "block party" being planned outside DC jail this evening by supporters & relatives of Capitol siege defendants.
Yes... music is planned for the event
DC received funding to study different approaches to DC-295/I-295, an important first step. In future years we should also look at I-695 and reconnecting Capitol Hill/Hill East to the Navy Yard and SW Waterfront.

Exciting news! ANC 6B's Transportation Committee will be holding an EV-specific meeting this spring to talk about the implications of expanded electric vehicle use in our community.
Press Release:
@charlesallen
introduces legislation mandating 7,500 electric vehicle charging stations by 2027 (the District currently has around 250...total):
I'm honored to be joining ANC 6B's Transportation Committee as a Resident Member this year. Looking forward to working with neighbors to make Hill East safer and more accessible for residents to walk, bike, and use public transportation.
We had months of DDOT presentations to 6B about Penn Ave bus lanes that focused on camera enforcement. It’s been a central piece of discussion about 8th St too. The Mayor undercut that at the last minute with no actual enforcement in sight.
@BrianneKNadeau
@wmataGM
Another question from
@BrianneKNadeau
: what happened with bus lane enforcement?
@MayorBowser
: it's not about revenue. It's about education and safety. Says an education campaign is slated to start in January.
Thanks to
@brookepintodc
for discussing her mobile voting bill with
@DCDemocrats
but the Council can't legislate for something that doesn't exist. Let's focus on proven methods like vote-by-mail and not insecure apps that put our electoral process at risk.
DC's crime lab received partial reaccreditation last month after three years. However, the ballistics unit is still TBD. That means every incident like this is much less likely to result in MPD making an arrest.
This morning,
@CMCharlesAllen
and
@brandonbest
sent a letter to
@SafeDC
and
@DMEforDC
reaffirming community support for Safe Passages at the Eastern Market and Potomac Ave Metro stations. With four schools within a short walk, its critical to include Potomac Ave in this program.
A constituent witnessed an unwell individual walking in traffic and spent several minutes trying to get through to 911 and 311 this afternoon with no answer. Completely unacceptable
@OUC_DC
.
Initial work to prepare the Potomac Ave Metro entrance for a canopy is expected to begin Sunday night. Work will be done between Midnight and 5 AM to allow for the station to remain open. I have engaged with WMATA and the contractor to try to limit noise as much as possible.
Reader Sarah’s husband is in the hospital. She is asking the community to help her figure out what happened to her husband early this morning. Were you in the area? Do you have security camera footage that can help her? If so, please email EJSMSlatt

D.C. officials now admit they mistakenly defunded an anti-poverty program aimed at kids, and now the D.C. Council is scrambling to find $54 million to revive it. Here's everything on the saga of Baby Bonds:
Rush hour on Pennsylvania Ave is going to look a little different! The new bus priority and protected bike lanes will keep people moving while making the road safer for all forms of transportation.

Council hearings can sometimes give a false sense of public sentiment since they leave out potential witnesses who can't block large portions of their work day. There needs to be at least a virtual option long after we've gotten past COVID.
Speaking first,
@charlesallen
says he wants to keep some form of virtual hearings: "The virtual hearing has dramatically increased the level of participation in the public process. There’s a lot to be said for what we have gained in public participation," he says.
This article raises two issues on public safety in DC that we don't talk about enough: having an unaccountable federal prosecutor deciding when to bring charges and the disastrous loss of accreditation by the local crime lab.
The
@DCDemocrats
will be working hard for
@Travis_Nembhard
and
@MikeFeggans
this year (and
@pwcdanica
for VA Senate). Join our joint Blue Wave/Statehood Committee event on 7/12 to get involved! Conversation with VA Candidates starts at 7 pm:
I've reached out to MPD Commander Bryant to request a more visible presence in and around the station plaza and will convey that to Metro Transit Police as well.
“If I needed leaves picked up on Q Street I’d call John, if I needed repaving, I’d call John — he’s the fix-it guy, he gets it done. Everyone knows John. John is the guy we go to. And now he’s out of there, so who do we go to? That’s the big question.”
None of these are perfect solutions. We need to take a broad approach to respond to the unacceptable level of gun violence in this area over the past few months and work on prevention strategies for the future.
Had a great walk around the SMD this morning with our
@DCMOCRS
@Ward6JakeStolz
. Lots to highlight for potential transportation and public safety improvements.
