@NoblestCalling Do you know the back story? It makes it even better I’ll write it out here if you’re interested

If your perspective is based on church publications from the last 20 years or so, it does seem they’ve made an intentional shift towards fundamental, faith promoting material as opposed to deeper doctrinal discussions. I believe it was the Hugh B Brown, Joseph Fielding Smith days that precipitated that. Add to that McConkie and Kimball, and I think the deal was sealed :)

@NuanceBro Wait, really?! Is this saying there’s no right to constitutional carry? Or that you can’t carry a gun at all, ever?

@utahhousedems @repastoddard End default vote by mail. Voting should be in person. Mail in should be the exception. Simple.

Well, part of the issue is the difficulty in verifying whether fraud has occurred. Vote by mail makes that significantly more complicated since there’s no physical verification of the identity of the person involved, other than signature which, Im sure you’re aware, is easy to manipulate. Add to that things like ballot harvesting, voter coercement, ballot theft, ballot drop off site tampering, etc and I don’t think it’s difficult to see the issue. And again, part of the issue itself is how difficult it is to determine whether it’s even occurred. I think there may only be 30-40 countries where widespread mail in ballots are the norm, so that this is even controversial is quite silly. The only thing worse than poor ballot security is low confidence in the electoral process which, you guessed it, mail in voting contributes to.

@Rach_the_Rivetr Mine was: Me: do you believe in the literal gathering of Israel? Her: yes, why? Me: because whenever I look in your eyes I feel as lost as the Ten Tribes

Hey @latinedisce - I'm trying to incorporate more latin into our school's curriculum. What are 20 Latin phrases you feel every student in America should be intimately familiar with? Things like "Cogito, ergo sum" or "veni, vidi, vici" - where there is significant historical and cultural context

We’ve had this discussion many times in our class. Another misconception of a “great” book is that it’s great to read - as in a Twilight or Harry Potter. This is obviously not the case. In fact, many “great books” are dry or uninteresting and slow by modern standards. But their impact is immeasurable.

@MichaelSteele It depends on your interpretation of the 14th amendment, specifically how “jurisdiction” applies and whether you find subsequent Supreme Court decisions set faulty precedent. Aka - it may not be the predominant take, but it’s far from unheard of

@NealSpackman @ToddKMichael Excellent. There’s just so many plain and simple truths in the restored Gospel

Doctrinally, we don’t teach that animals have agency or that there is progression for them. But we do teach that they have spirits, albeit of a lower order. So the agency perspective doesn’t work in their case. It would be easy ti simply dismiss animals as just another part of creation, but since they have spirits and are sentient, it seems they must be more to it.

@MissRed_Roses @BradWitbeck I think you’re right, which would mean that in addition to having a ironically narrow view of Christianity they also don’t understand the English language :)

Right - but even then, opposition in all things presupposes agency. I won't lie - the animal one is interesting one since we don't believe they have agency in the same regard. It certainly gives us the opportunity, as moral agents, to decide how we will treat them - but what is our doctrinal/theological justification for why animals must suffer as well? I'm not sure how IMPORTANT a point it is, but I don't think Jacob handled that terribly well and I haven't spent much time on it myself.
