High Court has ruled Gemma O'Doherty and John Waters must pay the State and Oireachtas' legal costs of opposing their failed bid for permission to challenge the Covid-19 emergency laws. Costs relate to a two day hearing last month.
In refusing leave to Gemma O'Doherty/John Waters to challenge Covi-19 laws, the High Court said: "Unsubstantiated opinion, speeches, empty rhetoric and a bogus historic parallel are not a substitute for facts."

But it's not a charity issue. We need to loudly demand that children and vulnerable adults get the services they need, and are entitled to, as a matter of right.
High Court has described a parallel drawn by Gemma O'Doherty/John Waters between the Covid-19 laws and Nazi Germany as "absurd and offensive". Court has refused them permission to challenge the laws.
Got sad news today that my 98-year-old friend Bridgie has died. She had a hard life, was informally adopted, lost two children to suicide. She was stoic and feisty to the end. RIP Bridgie
Came across this scene this evening, a brave young asylum seeker (in blue blanket) jumped into the Liffey, along with a Garda, to save a woman who had fallen into the river. Dublin fire brigade confirmed all three are ok, thankfully. 🙏
Hoping the Garda declaration that a man arrested following Ashling Murphy's murder has been released and eliminated as a suspect might concentrate minds, including on Twitter, against rushing to judgment in this and other cases.
I put a lot of work into some of these delisted articles...Google ‘delists’ Irish Times articles and images about Seán Quinn and his family. via

The Marian Finucane documentary gives a great insight into the uphill task facing women seeking equality in so many spheres in Ireland. Women Today was groundbreaking. The struggle isn't over.

Can we stop demonising No voters please? They also include mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, nieces etc. A mature society recognises people can have sincere ethical, religious and moral objections to abortion. Let's not go back to the intolerance of 1983.
Inis Oírr tonight, just two more days on this magical island. Back to Four Courts on Monday for what looks to be a very interesting new law term. All good things..
There's a simple explanation and all court reporters know it. Addresses of charged persons are published to distinguish them from any person of the same name. Considerations of accuracy and our libel laws dictate this long established practice.
People who brag about the quality of Irish journalism: why was it necessary for the IT to publish the addresses of the 2 women arrested for quarantine violations but not those of the CEO of the Beacon or the Master of the Coombe? "Public interest"? Or classist misogyny?
Am hearing the Cabinet has chosen a female judge as the next president of the High Court, which would mark the first time a woman has held the position. Announcement expected later today.
I remember a judge asking a troubled 16 year old girl in court what exactly did she want. "I just want someone to be there for me, no matter what," was her reply. We all need to be kinder when people are struggling with their demons.

Mr Justice Gerard Hogan has been nominated by government for appointment to the Supreme Court. I suspect this news will be very well received.

Mother weeps in High Court as judge is told the lack of adolescent psychiatric beds means her suicidal teenage daughter, who suffered 'unspeakable' abuse as a child, must stay in busy A&E bed, then be moved to adult psych bed and hopefully get adolescent bed next week.
Judges and lawyers turned out en masse at the Four Courts today to say farewell to Chief Justice Frank Clarke, who retires today. Story later

Watching first episode of Mrs America. Cate Blanchett is terrific. The sad bit is that sexist patronising men are still controlling the world.

Judge has just told Ammi Burke he has never been "harangued" in such a fashion and has, over 30 years, never seen a solicitor conduct themselves as she has in court today when making arguments in the inquiry into her brother Simeon's detention.
Very happy to be departing the Four Courts today for a much needed holiday in the west. The traditional deluge of last day of term judgments has to be waded through first, including Supreme Court judgment on

A welcome development - bualadh bos to the Supreme Court which has begun providing, alongside its detailed judgments, very short summaries outlining core reasons for its decision. Another step towards improving access to justice.

Congratulations to all 23 barristers taking silk at the Supreme Court today. Special congrats to the five female SCs who get their patents 100 years after women were first admitted to

Women now make up 40 per cent of the Bar and 17 per cent of SCs.
It felt very unsafe in the Four Courts today due to the large number of people in and around the Round Hall. This contrasted with the tiny numbers attending hearings over the past few weeks - usually only those directly involved, court staff, lawyers, judges and court reporters.
Statement from the Courts Service: "We are disappointed and appalled that people chose, or organised, today to attend in large numbers, despite not being required to be there - and thus endangered themselves, Gardai, court staff, and court users to infection."
Happy Christmas to my niece, a nurse, who is working today and who, like all her colleagues, is scandalously underpaid. I hope 2022 will be the year when their work is appropriately valued.
The attacks on Kitty Holland are appalling and are nothing more than a cynical bid to use misinformation to destroy truth. I totally support Kitty and Dara MacDonaill, colleagues with integrity.
From what I see in the courts, extra prison spaces are not the answer to the complex crime problem. Adequate resourcing of mental health, addiction and community services should be a bigger priority.
No extra prison spaces will be delivered beyond previous commitments despite a promise from Simon Harris to expand capacity under his leadership.

After offensive and racist tweets from Gemma O’Doherty we have decided to block and report her to

. We are proud of our multicultural & diverse team and our customers. We are proud to work with, and serve, each and every one of them. Everyone is welcome in our store.
My wonderful niece, a newly qualified nurse, got her first vaccine shot today. She and many student nurses worked on the front line for a pittance during the pandemic. If we learn nothing else from Covid-19, I hope we learn whose work is truly valuable. And pay them properly.
It is now 1pm and Ammi Burke is still making arguments, two and a half hours later, about who shoild have gone first in making arguments in the continuing inquiry into her brother Simeon's detention. The judge has just asked her is that the 26th time she made the same point.
Totally agree with Fintan O'Toole. Can we now get together to concentrate on tackling and eliminating economic, educational and health inequalities? I hope politicians and Twitterati will be just as enthusiastic about that.

High Court judge notes not one woman has been appointed an examiner to any company since examinership was introduced here almost 30 years ago. Judge Robert Haughton has strongly encouraged the appointment of women as examiners and liquidators.
Gardai have sealed off both entrances to a street to the side of the Four Courts where today's progress report hearing of the Gemma O'Doherty/John Waters action over the Covid-19 laws is being held. Hearing is being held in court 25 which can be accessed only from Chancery Place
Sitting in a small court in the Four Courts as a judge reads from a judgment. Impossible to keep the recommended social distance. Why can't judgments be published online with no need for parties to attend court? They will ultimately be published online.

A parting observation today from retiring Supreme Court Judge Mary Finlay Geoghegan: "You do your best to administer justice but you have to do it in accordance with law and that sometimes puts the brakes on you."
Finally a name and face can be put on Ms P - Natasha Perie - the young brain dead pregnant mother kept on life support until the High Court ended it the day after Christmas 2014. Her family got an apology in court today. (via

High Court rules State is entitled to its costs of failed bids by Charles Byrne and Joanna Jordan to challenge abortion referendum result. Costs of State and Refetendum Commission estimated over €200k. Stay applies to Friday on certification of result to allow Ms Jordan appeal.
Thinking of my father today. One of the kindest men and hardest workers I ever knew, his health was wrecked by very long work hours and poor conditions. He never complained but he deserved much better treatment. RIP

Three female senior counsel represented the applicant, the State and the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission in an important Supreme Court appeal over the lawfulness of the citizenship revocation procedure today. Is that a record?
Good news, eldest niece has given birth to a healthy baby boy. Both doing well. I'm a grand aunt for a second time this month! Only down side is I've no idea when I'll be able to give him a hug but the important thing is to do all we can to keep everyone healthy.
Have put this together in the hope of protecting both the right to a fair trial and the public right to have crimes prosecuted.
